One window – one program Traditionally windPRO have been split in several windows. As of windPRO 3.0 the “Project Explorer”, “Maps & Object”

and “WindPRO calculations” windows have been merged into one single window.

The layout can be adjusted and the individual components can be re-sized & moved to fit the individual needs.

Customized layouts can be saved and re-used.

Undo functionality windPRO now contains a undo/redo functionality as known from many other programs

You can easily view your latest actions and undo a single or multiple steps.

Layer groups The object layer can now contain groups, which provides a much more flexible way of organising your objects.

The new time varying energy calculation concept in windPRO 3.0

Why calculate in time domain?

More accurate calculation:

Validation of model calculation setup is much more precise. Instead of having "one average value" to check against,

multiple checks, by direction, month etc. can be performed.

Weibull fitt problems are avoided.

Corrections of power curves: Air density, turbulence, shear and veer are time step specific and higher accuracy can be

obtained compared to average corrections.

Similar for wake models, it is known how the wake losses highly depend on turbulence, which vary in time

Curtailment losses, like noise, flicker, birds, bats or load based (sector management) can be calculated very precise

having the time series productions

Be better to set up the models/improve the models

More detailed feedback recalculating operating turbines - learn about model problems, get better to set up models for

new projects

Get close to where the model calculation problems are e.g. by filtering data in high/low turbulence periods etc.

Value of turbine production:

Output for time varying tariffs or if own consume partly is covered from turbines; this can be calculated if consumption

pattern is known.

Grid systems and other production units can be designed better knowing the time varying production, e.g. how will the

spatial distribution of wind farms affect the wind production variations in time.

Utilize Meso scale wind data:

Meso scale wind data are not precise - calibration with time domain data makes it possible to correct for e.g. directional

and seasonal bias in the meso scale model data.

Meso scale data are complete, no "gaps" or frozen equipment like in real measurements, and all signals are available,

like temperature, pressure, turbulence, shear, veer, humidity, solar radiation, etc.

Meso scale data open up for advanced corrections, like icing loss and heating requirements

Huge future development potential

Manufacturers are working towards more intelligent turbines, which e.g. adjust to load conditions, meaning that the

power curves will change by weather (load) conditions. Model can adapt these features.

Page 5: What’s new in windPRO 3.0? - EMD International A/S 3.0_det… · What’s new in windPRO 3.0? ... raw wind data and the calculation point (turbine position), so each raw time step

How to use it?

The new PARK start-up form is shown above. Choose the “Time series based”, either based on Meso scale model data or

based on measurements.

The main differences between the two options:

Meso scale based data, require a calibration as the data are not precise enough as “raw input” to calculations, but no

long term correction as the data are available long term. Both regional wind measurement data as turbine production

can be used for calibration.

The data based on measurements do not require calibration when assuming good data quality, but require typically

long-term correction as the while local measurement period is often short. Meso scale data will typically be the best

option for such a long term correction.

As local measurements often have a higher resolution in time and are more precise, they are the best data for fine

tuning the calculation setup. When having operating turbines with high-resolution production data available, a very

refined and precise calculation model can be established.

An advantage of meso scale model data is that they are available anywhere for a long period. Thus, combined

calculation with both local measurements and meso scale data can give the most precise answers to the most relevant

questions: What is the long term expected annual energy production? What are the expected losses due to curtailments

and other known time domain based stops, e.g. bat stop.

When having operating turbines, a follow-up based on detailed calculations will give a unique basis for checking the

performance of the turbines, e.g. how does turbulence change the performance? And thus being able to calculate future

projects more precisely taking this information into account.

Downscaling meso scale data – the scaler

An important new component in the calculation is the scaler.

Page 6: What’s new in windPRO 3.0? - EMD International A/S 3.0_det… · What’s new in windPRO 3.0? ... raw wind data and the calculation point (turbine position), so each raw time step

The scaler handles partly downscaling of meso scale data by “lifting” out the meso scale terrain data (included by

downloading EMD Meso scale data) and partly post calibration correcting for bias in meso scale data (e.g. direction bias).

The scaler can also post calibrate measured data, when removing mast shadow or when adjusting nacelle anemometer

data to get closer to the real free wind, if having turbine production data to calibrate against.

Finally, the scaler can perform RIX correction and include the new advanced displacement height calculator. The scaler is

the component used for setting up all corrections, and based on these it establishes the transfer function between the

raw wind data and the calculation point (turbine position), so each raw time step wind speed can be moved to the

turbine locations.

Please note that the scaler can interpolate between more masts or more meso scale points based on advanced

interpolation on geostrophic wind level.

The scaler can be used from:

The PARK module, for a time varying calculation.

The Meteo analyser tool, for e.g. establishment of a calibrated scaler for Meso data having measurement mast

data.

The Meteo object, graphic|profile, for e.g. downscaling meso data within the meteo object or testing different

scaler settings, like displacement height.

The time varying concept makes it possible to (from time series PARK calculation):

Air density correct on time step basis

Turbulence correct power curve by time step

Shear and veer correct power curves by time step (using Meso scale data)

Use time step turbulence to adjust wake decay constant in wake model

Improvements in non-time varying calculations Both the new strong displacement height calculator and the RIX correction feature are alse implemented in the

traditional wind statistic based calculation concept.

Site compliance module Results from a WAsP CFD calculation can now be utilized in the site compliance module.

New Load response tool (life time calculation) Load Response is a new module in WindPRO 3.0 which is used combination with the Site Compliance module. With Load

Response you can check if the wind turbine loads for a site and layout are within the design limits for a particular IEC

wind turbine class e.g. IIB. Load Response checks loads for all the main components e.g. blades and main shaft and

comes with a generic wind turbine model. Wind turbine manufacturers can add their own specific turbine models for in-

house use and based on their own pre-run aero-elastic simulations.

On-demand global MESO data – Connect to the EMD In windPRO 2.9 we introduced the EMD-ConWx mesoscale dataset which covers most of Europe in a resolution of 3 km.

In windPRO 3.0 we introduce the ability to run mesoscale simulations on-demand anywhere in the world.

Page 8: What’s new in windPRO 3.0? - EMD International A/S 3.0_det… · What’s new in windPRO 3.0? ... raw wind data and the calculation point (turbine position), so each raw time step

In order to use the service you need credits, which is the way you pay for the calculations.

Performance check module improvements

The Performance Check module has been given a major overhaul in windPRO 3.0.

The filtering and calculations behind the filterings have changed. The aggregated data now only includes the non-filtered

data. Further, the whole calculation setup “behind” the tool has been improved.

Page 9: What’s new in windPRO 3.0? - EMD International A/S 3.0_det… · What’s new in windPRO 3.0? ... raw wind data and the calculation point (turbine position), so each raw time step

Looking at time series with averaging, now only the enabled concurrent data (as well as measured and calculated) is now

shown, making this graph functionality much more useable.

The time series graphs now include“ratios” making the evaluations simpler. The above example shows how wake-

modelling problems in SE and NW directions are clearly visible.

Page 10: What’s new in windPRO 3.0? - EMD International A/S 3.0_det… · What’s new in windPRO 3.0? ... raw wind data and the calculation point (turbine position), so each raw time step

The new “WF difference” view compares all turbines in sector, season, diurnal or wind speed intervals. It is thereby fast

to see visually if e.g, a specific direction sector causes problems for all turbines and thus need adjustments in the

calculation setup. As a refinement, the graph can show the “difference”, where e.g. each sector show how much this

contributes to the total difference between measured and calculated as “ratios”, how good is each direction sector

calculated.

The WF loss graph shows the loss calculated as difference between measured and calculated for e.g. the filtered data. It

is thereby fast and easy to get these data for reports, by copying the graph data by the “Excel-button”.

Page 11: What’s new in windPRO 3.0? - EMD International A/S 3.0_det… · What’s new in windPRO 3.0? ... raw wind data and the calculation point (turbine position), so each raw time step

WindPRO 3.0 includes new disabling tools, where e.g. a rectangle can be drawn around “un-normal data”, like shown

above for power curtailment, and the data points can be disabled. When viewing the disabled data, it is possible to see

exact how large the curtailment losses have been.

Page 12: What’s new in windPRO 3.0? - EMD International A/S 3.0_det… · What’s new in windPRO 3.0? ... raw wind data and the calculation point (turbine position), so each raw time step

As turbine labelling, both WTG ID and WTG number can now be used on map as well as on graphs.

Photomontages The photomontage module contains a number of improvements. It is now possible to create photomontages directly

based on Google Street view.

Page 13: What’s new in windPRO 3.0? - EMD International A/S 3.0_det… · What’s new in windPRO 3.0? ... raw wind data and the calculation point (turbine position), so each raw time step

Another new feature is that you can create photomontages using “drag & drop”. Simply drag one or more image files

into the map.

It is now made easy to use photomontage together with Photoshop or other image editors.

Improved WMS maps with on-line update. The WMS tool can now download multiple tiles and perform runtime updates of the map area / zoom level.

windPRO 3.0 also contain lots of other improvement:

• It is now possible to do an on-line import of existing turbines in the United States

• The NORD2000 model has been improved.

• New default report design

• Improved Shapefile (.shp) import/export.

• Re-designed option dialog

• New multiple result-to-file export tool
