    August 2013

    Earthquakes, storms, where are the locusts?We can only reinforce what the Dom Post and other media are saying. Keep thoseemergency kits up to date. Make plans with your family, friends and neighbours aboutwhat to do emergencies.

    We do suggest that street groups (say 10-12 houses) get together and update info aboutresources held locally and to keep contact details in a safe place. Its also important tonote people around you who may need extra help in any emergency situation. (People whowere in organised street groups coped much better after the Christchurch earthquake andwe are strongly advised to get them up and running here chop chop).

    Seal pups visiting take care when driving at nightTired seal pups are coming ashore to rest from heavy seas. Sue Rose tells us that they liketo rest on the smooth road surface so please take care.

    Friends of Mana looking for keen volunteersLots of exciting and important conservation projects that you and your family can get stuckinto on Mana Island. Restoring habitats for native birds, reptiles and insects.

    Sue and Harrys bird reportTwo shore plovers visiting here regularly are a breeding pair, RO:BO (red/orange andblue/orange leg bands) and BW:OG (blue/white and orange/green leg bands). They hadchicks on Mana Island in the last breeding season. RO:BO lost her previous mate to the ratthat turned up the island last year.     The Dog Park Plimmertons own Bark RoyalThe woof is spreading. The Dog Park is the place to be. Justine and the Pet FeedingSolutions team are exercising local dogs there every day and demand for the service isgrowing. Justine invites local dog owners to bring their dogs down to the park in UlricStreet on Saturday mornings (10am 1pm) for a free play (dogs) and a cuppa (owners). Ifyour dog gets bored or stressed when you are out all day this is the ideal solution. Pick up(of excited pooches) and delivery home after lots of socialising and play (tired, happypooches) in the special dog wagon can be arranged.

    New 50k speed limit for Pukerua BayFrom Monday 21 July the 70k speed zone at the northern entrance to Pukerua Bay will bereduced to 50k. Local residents are very pleased and say that this will make entering and

    leaving the roads that join the state highway much safer. There have been 43 accidentson that 2km stretch of road in the past five years, three of them fatal, the localresidents association says. Anything that slows vehicles down in this area is welcome.

    Motuhara Road dangerous for joggers and walkers at nightA resident tells us that he has had two recent shocks while driving at night on MotuharaRoad between The Track and Roys Road recently. He says, The first near miss involved afemale jogger dressed in dark colours. The only thing I saw was her white legs. Thesecond involved a man, also dressed in dark colours walking a dog. Again all I saw was

    some light hairs in the dogs coat. This stretch of Motuhara Road is narrow and winding,its not well lit and it has no footpath. If you are using it at night please wear bright orreflective clothing for your own safety.
