The weather continues to give lessons in being prepared for any eventuality. Even if layers are not necessarily your thing, its the only way to go…. Early yesterday morning it was strapless top or sundress but by the afternoon it was thick jacket weather. And after everyone enjoying the beaches last week, the ocean has been icy cold, but the fisherman rejoiced be-cause some very nice sized steenbras have been taking the bait after the easterlies. Monday is National Womens Day—a day to remember the courage and quiet strength of those who went before and to rejoice in the fabulosity of being female! There will be a get together and pro-gram at Simunye Centre in kwaNokut-hula on Monday 9th from 9am. All women are welcome! Have a wonderful week in our beautiful Bay. Remember to be lovingly aware!

BACKGROUND: Bitou Municipality has launched a Neighbourhood Development initiative in terms of the National Neighbourhood Development Partnership Grant Program. Projects will be implemented in various precincts within the Bitou Municipality area. PROJECT PLANNING & IMPLEMENTATION: Aurecon South Africa (Pty) Ltd has been appointed as Overall Project Managers responsible for the planning & implementation of the project in conjunction with a local Steering Committee within the Municipality. The first of these projects will be implemented in the New Horizons Precinct. COMMUNITY LIAISON SERVICES: As Project Manager, Aurecon wishes to appoint a suitably qualified & experienced Community Liaison Officer to work alongside the Professional Team, the Project Steering Committee and the affected communities to promote and maintain a spirit of mutual trust, understanding and co-operation between all role players and stakeholders in respect of the envisaged project. Bridging Abilities We asked Toni to share a liitle about the new NPO which they have to assist folk with disabilities…. Thank you for this opportunity to write in the What’s New from afar. I’m starting an NPO here in Stellies with a friend of mine. We are currently in the registration process and our first board meeting will take place next week. In a nutshell, Bridging Abilities aims to use sport and recreation camps to improve the quality of life for each person with a disability that comes to us. We will strive to do this by providing them with the opportunities to develop themselves physically, socially, emotionally and intellectually. It is our belief that through these camps we can build on the abilities and strengths of each young person and empower them to reach their own potential. We also believe that by creating a centre where people who are disabled, regardless of age, can come to utilize equipment and other therapeutic services we can empower them to live more productively and perhaps to become more integrated members of society. I want to thank my family and friends back home for their support during an exciting but also daunting time. I will see Plett in August. What a beautiful occasion it was last Thursday morning to share in the joyful launch of the Krotoa Foundation, the brainchild of sponsor Lynette Swart who with the community of Kranshoek have started knitting these adorable animals ( and mittens for those chilly days too) . Lynette runs a Cycling tour company in Plett and wanted to include the beauty of the people and scenery of Kranshioek in her packages. Lynette got to know some of the ladies and heard that they were keen to do more crafts and earn an income. Friend Jenny from Pretoria came to mind .. Lynette donated wool and Jenny came to Plett and taught the ladies to knit the animals and so the feverish fun began. (There are husbands who have learnt to

The knitter will get 1 third, the centre will get 1 third towards its development projects, and the remaining third will be used for a bursary fund for Kranshoek’s youth. Snippets for the Week … by Heidi Together, with the help of the Vets and the public, we man-aged to spay 42 dogs and cats for the month of July. At the rate we are going, we should have New Horizons up to date within the next 2 months. From here we do Pine Trees, Qolweni & Bossiesgif. We urgently need to do 50 animals a month, as we really have to start working in Kwano as soon as possible. Most of the dogs in this area are well fed and cared for. The major problem is overpopulation and a lack of education. This can be sorted out. What a difference between 9h00 and 19h00 on a Friday, in New Horizons. The dogs are out looking for food and crossing the busy roads. Many are hit by vehicles. Some drivers don’t even bother to stop. Dogs that look almost dead are just dumped on an open space. people asking to please remove their dogs, others asking to have their dog spayed and remove 1 week old puppies. Some wanting puppies, others wanting watch dogs. The dog I had spayed on Friday, had 3 deep gashes on the top of her head. Thank you to Dr van Reenen for shaving, cleaning and treating. When returning the dog, the owner reported 2 boys of about 17 years old who had hurt his dog. He also told me that they had raped his daughter. He did report the matter to the police, regarding the rape. He was told that nothing much could be done. He then asked me to please report the cruelty toward his animal, as perhaps the police would take more notice of my complaint. I am still to have a response - regarding the dog dumped in water! I am not in a position to help the children and also not the adults with their complaints. The only thing I am able to do, is to spay all the female dogs, remove the unwanted and feed where necessary. By spending time in this area, I am becoming more aware of how very wrong things really are. What is child welfare doing and what are the police doing? At last our Charity Shop will be opening this week. We will be at Shop No 2/3, Atmar Centre in High Street (behind Pep Stores). Any jumble will be greatly appreciated. Our Children Need YOU to Level their Playing Fields Are you an educator, sports coach, drama, dance or art teacher; counsellor, peer educator, social worker, career guidance specialist, private tutor, life skills practitioner, homework supervisor, volunteer or an involved parent with special gifts?. If so, please set aside your Saturday of 21 August 2010 to network and collaborate to make extra mural activities accessible to all our local children. While some children have joined the new Plett Pioneers Field Band or participate in after school sport, the many children who rely on a taxi, bus, or walk great distances to get home, miss out on sport, extra lessons and other enriching activities. They do not get to benefit from the array of physical, social and emotional benefits that these provide. The forthcoming Indaba aims to ensure that structured after-school activity programmes are built into the school day for all Bitou’s children. Firstly though we need to know who is offering school based and private after school activities. Together with schools, programmes can then be developed. All our children deserve every opportunity to light their imaginations, develop character reserves and learn life skills. As Stacia Tauscher observes “We worry about what a child will become tomorrow, yet we forget that he is someone today.” The After School Activities Indaba on 21 August at the Piesang Valley Community Hall will contribute to the Bitou Integrated Education Development Plan. The greater community of Bitou is a living walking together example of what the national Dinokeng Scenarios planners call the ideal of Walk Together 2010 – the imperative that Government, Business and Community collaborates. The Bitou 10 Education Foundation has embraced the responsibility for hosting this Indaba in line with its objective to ‘Develop and implement projects and programmes that provide opportunities for Bitou learners to fulfil their potential’ Facilitator Johan Ryk will ensure that by the close of the Indaba at 3pm on 21 August, objectives will have been met and a plan made by all to accelerate the provision of structured co curricular support and developmental activities for all our children. BITOU MUNICIPALITY PLETTENBERG BAY EMERGENCY DESALINATION PLANT SEEKING ALTERNTIVE SEAWATER ABSTRACTION OPTION Despite the above average rain received over the Plettenberg Bay area recently, the water situation remains critical. Whilst river levels in the Keurbooms River increased allowing a short-term reprieve, the Roodefontein Dam level only increased 10% to its current level of 20%.

This is due to the bulk of the rainfall falling further inland, away from the dam’s small, coastal catchment area and the numerous empty farm dams upstream that must fill first. Given the average daily municipal use, and in the absence of further significant rainfall, the dam will run dry. If this occurs in conjunction with low river levels, water supplies remains critical, the construction of the emergency 2Mℓ seawater desalination plant remains an imperative. The project engineering team recently undertook an investigation of Robberg Beach to determine the effectiveness of the planned abstraction beach wells. The shallow sands and the low permeability of the sand have been found unsatisfactory, realising an abstraction rate of only 4.9ℓ/s where 10ℓ/s/well is needed, based on the original design. Consequently, the project engineers are investigating alternative abstraction options to secure the required volume of filtered seawater through the most economical viable way, to operate the desalination plant. Leading options under consideration and investigation include increasing the number of beach wells, moving the abstraction wells into the Piesang estuary or a combination of these. Regardless of the abstraction options, the Beacon Isle site remains the preferred site for the desalination plant at this juncture. The Environmental Impact Assessment Process (EIA) is currently at the end of the scoping phase. The Department of Environmental Affairs and Development Planning (DEA&DP) issued acceptance of the scoping report submitted in June 2010, allowing the process to proceed to the impact EIA stage. The unforseen challenges regarding the abstraction of seawater may however mean that the scoping report is no longer fully appropriate. Thus could require a review if an alternative abstraction option is pursued, especially where the option to abstract from the Piesang estuary is concerned. A reviewed scoping report could trigger the need for an additional public participation process. This unforeseen circumstance increases the pressure on the project planning phase and the value of the remaining water reserves. The Municipal Council therefore appeals to all residents to remain persistently vigilant against water wastage, be frugal in its use and creative in its conservation, regardless of the perceived good rainfall episodes occurring occasionally. The saving levels have reduced from an impressive average of 35% between January and March and have reduced drastically to 15% between April and June 2010. The overall target is 40% reduction in water consumption, and the Bitou Municipality would still appeal to the public to adhere to water restrictions as advertised previously. The Bitou Municipality has recently experienced proliferations of non- adherence to Municipal rules and r egulations which in return seriously hampers service delivery. This situation leads to great inconveniences to the public. The office of the Municipal Manager, after meticulously consideration resolved for the disbandment of the VIP Close protection Unit. The unit that was established to protect the Mayor and Councilors. The situation has improved considerably and a decision was taken to disband the unit and redeploy most of them to Protection Services in the Community Services department. Mem-bers of the unit were presented to the Mayoral Committee dressed in a Fawn Brown Uniform and Royal Blue together with the rank insignia. A Municipal Law enforcement organogram was tabled and a recommendation was that both Department of Justice and Directorate of Public Prosecution are informed of the new establishment of the Municipal Law enforcement unit. Letter via the Editor Boat Maria. The boat Maria which has been moored near the Keurbooms Caravan Park broke free of its moorings last week due to a frayed mooring rope and washed up on the Seagull sanctaury, close to the river mouth. Fortunately Graham Anley was kind enough to fix an anchor on it to stop its ultimate demise. If you are a boat owner with your boat moored on the Keurbooms River, please check your mooring ropes and chains as even these wear with time and you will lose your boat. I have recovered some 6 mooring bouys, with no identification, washed up on the side of the river over this year. These recovered bouys may be purchased from the CVC Charity Shop in the Atmar Centre. Our Bitou community are to be blessed with over 7000 solar energy geysers for subsidised houses as part of the National Energy Department’s roll-out of one million units across South Africa. Ian Ramonyane, director of Malrams Investment Holdings, the distribution partner of solar geyser importer Afrilanga made a presentation to Mayco last week and said that Solar heating means hot water is not just for people who can afford it,” The geysers are guaranteed for five years and have a life expectancy of 20 to 25 years The project also creates employment opportunities. The company trains locals to install and maintain the geysers, which require servicing every three years. Local gospel groups entertained in Bright Ideas HIV & AIDS Treatment support group launch Those affected as well as those who are infected by HIV and AIDS gathered last Saturday at Simunye Hall in Kwanokuthula for the official launch of Bright Ideas HIV and AIDS treatment support group which had been defined by the group coordinator Sylvia Khumbaca as an organisation to encourage people to take treatment and discourage discrimination of people who are living with HIV and educating people about HIV and treatment. There were also speakers from various Aids organizations such as Joy Club that was represented by Xoliswa Kinikini , an HIV activists who had been living with HIV virus for the past 11 years and Khomanani was represented by Siphokazi Baartman who also shared her experience of living with Aids as she expressed how proud she is to be open about her status. Mr. Lindinkosi Zumani who was the program director also encouraged churches to go out and visit people in their homes as some go to church without even a hope as they are poor and unemployed so churches end up spreading the word of God to hungry people. Conservation Corner The ORCA foundation has recently launched a new project which aims to rehabilitate 6 juvenile loggerhead turtles in order to eventually release them back into the sea. Loggerhead turtles are listed as endangered on the IUCN red list so this project will hopefully raise awareness and help increase numbers of Logger-heads in the wild. The six turtles were all stranded in the Plettenberg bay area and are currently in the Ocean Blue shop aquarium where they will be kept until they are healthy enough for release. Strandings are becoming increasingly common due to pressures from storm surges and extensive fishing and juveniles are extremely vulnerable to these issues. Letter via the Editor This letter is directed to the Plett traffic department. You might ask why it is not sent direct - I won’t receive an answer. One is continually seeing vehicles on the roads with cycle racks strapped to the back obscuring their number plates and as far as I understand, nothing is done about it. The excuse is that they bought it from the bike shop so it must be legal. My question to the Plett and Eden traffic department is. Would it be OK for me to fit a bike rack to the rear of my SUV - but as I am not a cyclist - and leave it there permanently to block my number plate from speed cameras as I am lead to believe that the cameras only record from the rear of the vehicle as many cars don’t bother to fit front plates. The Terrible rubbish problem in the Township - - - we ask for the provision of secure RUBBISH Containers, which would exclude DOGS+HORSES from scavenging the rubbish?? 2. Some of the community members wish to be employed with cleaning up the rubbish only to be told that they need to be registered ratepayers/income tax payers before they can be employed. Surely, with such an acute shortage of work amongst the Kranshoek Community every opportunity should be given to make funds available to employ people on site to keep their township clean.
