Chalk it up to clean living, good genes, or your own fountain of

youth, but many of you have found a way to seemingly make time stand still. Truth be told, if it wasn’t for mirrors and cameras one might actually be able to convince oneself that it’s just our kids that are getting older. It’s a little bit harder to make the same case for the exterior of our homes, however. Let’s face it. Regular doses of sun, wind, wind, sun eventual-ly take their toll. For those of you that have been in your home for a while or perhaps recently purchased an older home, it’s very likely time to repair and protect the exterior of your home by touching up or repainting. If you need to repaint, please bear in mind that no approval is required if you are stay-ing with your original paint scheme.

However if you are contemplating any changes of color, those colors must be submitted and approved by your Design Review Committee. The overall appearance of our com-munity is a direct re ection of your individual efforts. On behalf of your association and your fellow neighbors, I thank you for the continued work and pride you put into the appearance of your homes and yards.

Shutting off the utilities in your home is one of the rst things to do when an emergency/natural disaster

occurs. It’s a very simple thing, unless you don’t know how to do it! It sounds simple enough. My husband knows how to do it. But I don’t typically think about those kinds of things. So, here’s the deal: what if an emergency strikes while you are home alone? Would you know how to turn off the gas? Electric? Water? Utility shut-off mini-workshops were recently offered by the Disaster Preparedness Committee in the Community of Sage Hills, located in Summerlin West, for the express purpose of teaching residents how to turn off utilities in case of any kind of emergency/natural disaster. The workshops were taught by Howard Jenkins, co-chair of the Disaster Preparedness Committee. He started each session with information about tools necessary for turning off the gas and water valves. One

emergency tool is made for turning off both, or you can use a wrench. If your circuit breaker panel is outside, and locked, you will need easy access to a key. Taking turns, the residents practiced turning gas and water valves on and off. Each session ended with a suggestion to have a designated spot in the garage for all tools, keys, and instructions to be kept. In a true emergency, rising panic is inevitable. Having everything you need in one location would be extremely bene cial, possibly life-saving. Hand-outs with instructions and graphics were available to all who attended: 20 on the rst day, an additional eight the next day. Afterward, the instructions were emailed to all Sage Hills residents. Disaster preparedness is an ongoing process. The Sage Hills Disaster Preparedness Committee schedules an awareness event once a year to remind residents of the importance of having an emergency stash of food, water and medical supplies. This is the rst year the committee has added workshops to our general preparedness agenda. The workshops were well attended with excellent feedback from the residents who were there. And not just women like me! There were several men who attended also. Clearly, our residents understand that sometimes those seemingly simple things can be the consequential steps to safety rather than tragedy.
