• What is Ink made of??

• How would you find out?

Chromatography

• Get a beaker, paper strip, pen/marker

• About 2cm from one end of the paper, draw a line perpendicular to the paper

• Put about 1cm of water in the beaker

• Suspend the paper in the beaker so the bottom of the paper is in the water, BUT NOT the ink stripe

• Watch

• What is happening? Describe.

• When it looks finished – take it out. Describe.

• Try another color

• What if it didn’t do anything….

• Aha, permanent ink pen… we can try another solvent.

• Try it.
