HAVE YOU EVER WONDERED WHAT’S INSIDE OF YOU?

HAVE YOU EVER WONDERED WHAT MAKES YOUR BODY WORK?

Page 6: What’s in My Body?

OUR BODIES ARE MADE UP OF MANY DIFFERENT SYSTEMS THAT WORK TOGETHER. SOME ARE:

The Skeletal System

THE SKELETAL SYSTEM!(IT’S YOUR BONES!)

Your bones have two functions: STRUCTURE and PROTECTION

There are more than 200 bones in your body.Without them, you would be a puddle on the floor.

Page 8: What’s in My Body?

THE SKELETAL SYSTEM!(CONTINUED)

For example, your skull protects your brain and your nerves, as well as the different parts that make up your face, and all of your bones keep you from falling down.

Did you know that your teeth are bones

too?

Page 9: What’s in My Body?

THE SKELETAL SYSTEM!(CONTINUED)

Your joints are flexible connections between your bones that allow you to move in different directions.

Your bones are attached to your muscles, which allows you to move.

Page 10: What’s in My Body?

HEALTHY BONESHOW DO I TAKE CARE OF MY BONES AND TEETH?

By drinking milk and eating dairy for strong

bones & teeth

By exercising regularly and being careful when you do so.

By having good dental hygiene (brushing and

flossing!)

Page 11: What’s in My Body?

UNHEALTHY BONES & TEETHWHAT HAPPENS WHEN I DON’T TAKE CARE OF MY BONES AND TEETH?

Osteoporosis:Bones become brittle and fragile because of lack of calcium in the

diet as a child.

Cavities:Holes in teeth

appear due to poor dental hygiene, and they hurt!Fractures &

Breaks:Deformities, cracks and

breaks caused by unnatural pressure to the

bone.

THE DIGESTIVE SYSTEM!FROM FOOD TO POOP

Digestion starts in your mouth and exits as waste.

The Digestive system has two main jobs:To break down food

that gives your body nutrients. To remove waste from your body.

Page 14: What’s in My Body?

THE DIGESTIVE SYSTEM!(CONTINUED)Food starts by being broken down in your mouth by

your saliva, by an enzyme called amylase.

The ball of food you chew up, called a bolus,

travels through your internal organs, where it

is mashed up, moved around, and

broken down by enzymes and stomach

acid.

Page 15: What’s in My Body?

THE UNHEALTHY DIGESTIVE SYSTEM

Ulcers: Holes in the lining of the stomach or other

organs due to stomach acid from smoking and

other causes.

Heartburn: Stomach acid

comes back up the esophagus usually because of poor

diet. (This is usually very painful).

Diarrhea: Runny or watery

stools (poop) usually caused by bad bacteria

in the intestines.

THE CARDIOVASCULAR SYSTEM!

Your cardiovascular system delivers blood and oxygen to tissues all over your body.

Page 20: What’s in My Body?

THE CARDIOVASCULAR SYSTEM!(CONTINUED)

Your heart is the organ that pumps your blood, one of

the most important organs in your body.

Each day, your body pumps blood through

more than 60,000 miles of blood vessels

in your body.

Page 21: What’s in My Body?

THE CARDIOVASCULAR SYSTEM!(CONTINUED)

Your heart is a pump with four chambers that moves blood throughout your body with each beat. This beat is called your pulse, or heart rate, and it

happens 60-100 times per minute when breathing normally.

Page 22: What’s in My Body?

THE UNHEALTHY HEART

Heart Disease:Any number of diseases

relating to the near failure of the heart.

Atherosclerosis:Plaque buildup in the

arteries that can cause them to harden and block blood flow.

Hypoglycemia:Low blood sugar usually indicating a bigger problem.

Page 23: What’s in My Body?

THE HEALTHY CARDIOVASCULAR SYSTEM!HOW CAN I KEEP MY CARDIOVASCULAR SYSTEM HEALTHY?

Do exercise that gives you a fast heart rate

and makes you sweat.

Eat veggies, fruits and whole grains.

Eat an iron-rich diet.

QUESTION #2:This system breaks down food and removes waste

from your body.

Skeletal

Digestive

Cardiovascular

Give me a hint!

Page 32: What’s in My Body?

NOT EXACTLY, YOUR SKELETAL SYSTEM ISN’T INVOLVED IN FOOD BREAKDOWN.

Page 33: What’s in My Body?

NOT EXACTLY, YOUR CARDIOVASCULAR SYSTEM ISN’T REALLY INVOLVED IN FOOD BREAKDOWN.

Page 34: What’s in My Body?

HINT: THIS SYSTEM INVOLVES MANY OF YOUR INTERNAL ORGANS.

Page 35: What’s in My Body?

GREAT JOB!YOUR DIGESTIVE SYSTEM BREAKS DOWN YOUR FOOD AND REMOVES WASTE FROM THE BODY.

Page 36: What’s in My Body?

QUESTION #3:This is a problem that is associated with your digestive system, in which stomach acid comes

back up your esophagus.

Heartburn

Diarrhea

Osteoporosis

Give me a hint!

Page 37: What’s in My Body?

HINT: STOMACH ACID “BURNS” WHEN IT COMES BACK UP THE ESOPHAGUS.

Page 38: What’s in My Body?

SORRY,DIARRHEA IS A PROBLEM WITH THE OTHER END…

Page 39: What’s in My Body?

NOT QUITE,OSTEOPOROSIS IS A PROBLEM WITH YOUR BONES.

Page 40: What’s in My Body?

CONGRATULATIONS!HEARTBURN IS A CONDITION IN WHICH STOMACH ACID “BURNS” WHEN IT COMES BACK UP THE ESOPHAGUS.

Page 41: What’s in My Body?

QUESTION #4:This system ends in waste (poop).

Cardiovascular

Skeletal

Digestive

Give me a hint!

Page 42: What’s in My Body?

SORRY, THE CARDIOVASCULAR SYSTEM IS ALMOST A CONTINUOUS CYCLE.

Page 43: What’s in My Body?

HINT: THIS SYSTEM STARTS IN YOUR MOUTH.

Page 44: What’s in My Body?

SORRY, THE SKELETAL SYSTEM DOESN’T REALLY HAVE A “BEGINNING” OR “END.”

Page 45: What’s in My Body?

CONGRATULATIONS!THE DIGESTIVE SYSTEM STARTS IN YOUR MOUTH AND ENDS WITH WASTE, OR POOP.

Page 46: What’s in My Body?

QUESTION #5:This system contains more than 60,000 miles of

blood vessels in your body.

Cardiovascular

Skeletal

Digestive

Give me a hint!

Page 47: What’s in My Body?

HINT: THIS SYSTEM IS THE ONLY ONE THAT DIRECTLY INVOLVES YOUR BLOOD.

Page 48: What’s in My Body?

SORRY, THE DIGESTIVE SYSTEM DOESN’T REALLY HAVE ANYTHING DIRECTLY TO DO WITH BLOOD VESSELS.

Page 49: What’s in My Body?

NOT QUITE, THE SKELETAL SYSTEM DOESN’T INVOLVE BLOOD VESSELS.

Page 50: What’s in My Body?

THAT’S RIGHT!THE CARDIOVASCULAR SYSTEM HAS MORE THAN 60,000 MILES OF BLOOD VESSELS IN YOUR BODY.

Page 51: What’s in My Body?

QUESTION #6:The rate at which your heart pumps blood is called

your _______.

Pulse or heart rate

Bone rate

Blood rate

Give me a hint!

Page 52: What’s in My Body?

SORRY,THAT IS NOT THE RIGHT TERM FOR THE RATE AT WHICH YOUR HEART PUMPS BLOOD.

Page 53: What’s in My Body?

HINT: THIS IS THE RATE AT WHICH YOUR HEART WORKS.

Page 54: What’s in My Body?

CONGRATULATIONS! YOUR PULSE OR HEART RATE IS THE RATE AT WHICH YOUR HEART PUMPS BLOOD.

Page 55: What’s in My Body?

QUESTION #7:This term includes many different illnesses related

to the heart.

Sick

Hypoglycemia

Heart Disease

Give me a hint!

Page 56: What’s in My Body?

OOPS!HYPOGLYCEMIA REFERS TO ONE CONDITION, NOT MANY.

Page 57: What’s in My Body?

NO, ALTHOUGH “SICK” MAY REFER TO MANY DIFFERENT CONDITIONS, IT’S NOT SPECIFIC ENOUGH.

Page 58: What’s in My Body?
