What Happened in Assembly this Week:

A reading group from Room 4, including Phoebe, Will, Tama, Trey, Elisa, Anna, Fabien and Carlos performed a humor-

ous play called the “The Tale of Seven on a Bench”, which entertained their audience very well.

Room 5 showed some very attractive book covers they had designed and Grady, Holly W, Jess, Penny and Jaiden pre-

sented some maths puzzles that they use as starters in their class maths programme.

A small group from Room 1, including Abbie, Zoe C, Amber T, Aria and Alex A, performed a very funny play called

“Pink Fluffy Slippers” which had the audience laughing. Joey, Gabby, Jamie and Nico talked about their recent suc-

cess in the Nelson Schools’ Chess tournament and proudly showed their medals.

Room 2 performed a marching song, featuring some backwards counting and showed their environmental maths post-

ers that they had produced in co-operative pairs.

Room 3 showed some very attractive artwork, using dry pastels, portraying the view of Abel Tasman National Park

coastline as seen from a porthole on a ship.

We welcomed the following new pupils to our school: Zinzan, a new entrant in Wendy’s class, Aliana in Helen’s class and her brother Xavier in

Diarmuids’s class and Ella in Jodie’s class.

Netball Final: Mark and Jude watched our school team play last

Saturday as it was finals day at the Takaka Netball

Courts. Our Motupipi team played Takaka Primary

Breakers in the final of the junior grade. Our team

played really well on their first

game on the outside courts, with

bright sunshine, an asphalt

surface and a big audience. They

played really well and although

leading at half time, were

overtaken in the second half,

when the game became very exciting.

Motupipi couldn’t catch up and were beaten 10-8.

Everyone was really proud of the girls’ tenacity and

sense of fair play.

Saturday Morning Rugby:

Mark and Jude also enjoyed watching a couple of

games of rugby up at the Takaka grounds. Kegan,

Chris, Alex and Riley all scored tries in their

game and Rhys W, Tama

and Tane all played

strongly in their grade,

Tane putting in a lot of

good tackles and Rhys W.

scoring tries. Good on you

boys. We look forward to watching some more of

you this weekend at the Sevens Tournament in

Riwaka.

Miniball Reports: Our teams experienced some great success in this week’s games.

In the Year 3 and 4 grade:

Motupipi Minecraft played the Takaka Oompah Loompahs.

“We tied 18 all. It was a great game and we passed the ball around really well.

Fabien got his first goal of the season and I got a goal from far out” Joe.

Motupipi Magic played the Takaka Mighty Hurricanes:

“It was an awesome game. We won 36 to 14. We had great passing. I got some goals and Elisa and

Phoebe both scored goals. I am trying to remember to look up while I am dribbling down the court”.

Tama.

In the Year 5 and 6 grade:

Motupipi Mountain Lions played Takaka Icebreakers.

“We won well in a high scoring game – 30 to 16. Kegan did fast dribbling, we did some really long pass-

es and I put up a lot of blocks. Kegan, Chris and Rhianne shot lots of goals”. Mikey G.

Motupipi Breakers played Takaka Chunky Ducks.

“We got beaten 50 – 4. They seemed as though they had practiced a lot together.” Abbie M.

Motupipi Scary Scottish Scorpions won their game.

“We had lots of good passing from the whole team and accurate shooting from Nico, Bridie, Briget

and Guy” Guy.

Interschool Speech Championship

All Year 2 to 6 children are preparing and presenting speeches at

school at present, so that we can select our finest speakers to com-

pete in the Interschool Speech Competition at the Takaka Library to

be held on the 8th and 9th September. Please encourage your child to

bring home their speech and practice it with you.

Writing Competition Success: Recently a group of Room 4 pupils entered a writing competition in the Kiwi Conservation Corp magazine

that our school subscribes to. We really wanted to win a Kea three person tent. Today a big box ar-

rived and we opened it to find, not a tent, but ten wonderful torches and pages of huge, glossy bird

stickers as a reward for our imaginative writing about our Project Janszoon initiative and our hopes for

the future of Abel Tasman National Park. The following children were rewarded for their super writing:

Phoebe, Yoshi, Arjuna, Rhys N, Ashley, Will, Rosie, Amalie and Kate and one torch for the whole class to

use on camp. Well done, Room 4.

Scrabble: We are really lucky to have Murray

Rogers, a New Zealand Scrabble

champion come along to school each

Wednesday morning to spend time with

our keen and talented Scrabble

players, so that he can pass on some of

his clever game strategies and ideas

for using up tricky letter tiles. The

following children have been lucky

enough to share in this opportunity:

Phoebe, Elisa, Tama, Tane, Chris, Holly

W. Rhys W, Amber T, Gabby, Aria,

Hannah, Hazel, Nico and Ellie.

Thank you Murray for sharing your

expertise with us.

Nelson Zone Chess Power Interschool's Chess Tournament On Monday the 11th of August, Motupipi sent a team of 16 over to Wakefield to

compete in the regional chess tournament. There were ten teams competing and over

60 players. Our Motupipi B team won Bronze and Motupipi A team won Silver. The top

four scorers in the A team were Joey, Gabby, Nico and Jamie. In the B team it was Caleb, Guy,

Alex O and Jessie. The individual results for the top three girls were: in third place Daisy, in

second place Aria, and first place was Gabby.

Overall the day was fun and most of our players were happy with their score and hoping for an

even better result in the next competition.
