Downtown North Bay is so rich in culture, arts, scenic views and activities that on a

day-to-day basis go unseen to the general public. Beautiful views are among the

most popular with the Lake Nipissing waterfront to citizens and visitors of North

Bay, but what about everything else? Take a leisurely walk about downtown and

you will find unusual beauty that encapsulates the city core. The photo above

showcases some North Bay's core beauty. This photo is of the North Bay heritage museum

located on Oak street, this was previously a local train station. This is just one of many beautiful

views of the downtown. Take a walk and see for yourself!

Many people see this as just the top of a trashed building that was not maintained throughout the years. What’s the big deal they might say.

You may not see the beauty right away but if you stop

and give your attention, you will “feel” the beauty

I say, this shot shows progression and depth. Withered bricks give a nostalgic feel, like an old home. I don’t see this as an eye sore but an “eye” feel. Just beautiful.

Graffiti is both expression and art. Please don’t confuse vandalism with graffiti. Vandalism is when someone pointlessly defaces property. This lacks creativity and utilizes profanity.

Give the public artistic opportunities. If they show interest give them a canvas and let them be creative. Business owners, got a wall? Donate it, encourage this form of art! It is a great way to spruce up an empty boring wall

We need to stop focusing on the negatives of the city and appreciate the positives because the positives outweigh the negatives severely.

Like the classic children’s book: Green Eggs and Ham, give it a try.

For the past three years the Downtown Improvement Association organizes a banner festival to help beautify the downtown during the summer months. The D.I.A. looks upon citizens of North Bay to partake in this event, giving citizens a chance to support their city creatively. For the past three years, citizens of all ages have come down to volunteer their creative skills to paint a themed banner that is put up along the city core.

On average the event gets its theme in January and the forms go out to the public for submissions. The citizens are encouraged to draw out or render a draft of their banner and submit it to the D.I.A. for approval. Once the application is approved the citizens are informed of where and when to begin their paintings, and where to pick up their paint and banner; if painting in the convenience of their own home. On average the artists are given four months to complete their banners before they are mounted in our core. In October/November they are then taken down and auctioned off to support the event and finalize the event.

Banner Festival

It doesn't matter if you're a skilled painter or not, citizens are en-

couraged to come out and have fun. We are all firm believers in

this community event and would love to see more participants

and support from the community. If this event is to continue, we

need to see more support from the community. We encourage

anyone who has not heard of this event and is interested in

seeing this event take place again next year to contact us or the

Downtown Improvement Association.

Page 9: What's going on Downtown North Bay

Such a small event like the banner

festival, gives the core a community

feel, while beautifying the downtown. Each

year comes a new theme and a diverse

group of artists. The banner festival also

gives the chance to meet new people,

make friends and have fun.

Companies went from using solid hardwood frames, to frames composed of mainly particle board and press board. Putting back support and bottom sup-

port springs further away, and lessening the amount of springs they used. This made

for furniture that didn’t last a frac-tion of what it did before. All of

which you wouldn’t notice the difference shopping around. The only difference you might notice would be the price.

Many companies overseas fo-cus on keeping their produc-

tions costs as low as they can to offer substantially cheaper

prices to their dealers, and keep their profits higher. However, there

are still many manufacturers in Canada that still take pride in their products. Future Fine

Furniture is manufactured in Weston, ON, and they are a “bench” manufacturer. This means all of their products are made on a work bench, rather than a production line. They work on each piece individual-ly, and offer high quality products that stand the test of time.

When you grew up with your parents you probably remember sitting on that old, dated floral couch that you just wished would break, so something new could take its place, but no matter how hard you jumped up and down, or how much liquid was spilled on it, the couch just didn’t give up. Hey, even years later when they finally decided to replace it, the couch was still strong, and sturdy. Ever wonder why?

Furniture manufactured de-cades ago was built to last. Fur-niture was usually built either in the U.S.A. or Canada, and man-ufacturers took pride in their work making it as strong and sturdy to last through the years, however, this cost com-panies money. A lot of manufacturers though the years found the production costs climbing higher with the inflation, so they tried to make their compa-ny more profitable by sacrificing quality parts for that of lower quality, and this worked for some companies; but other companies simply could not adapt and went out of business.

.

Invest In Quality.

Page 11: What's going on Downtown North Bay

Frames made from kiln-dried hardwood double doweled, glued, screwed and corner-blocked. Finished with a 10-step procedure, hand wiped and 2 coats of lacquer. Sprung with no-less than 8 gauge fatigue-tested No-Sag springs. Decks are upholstered with white bonded sisal pads and two layers of felt padding. Sofas have 17 springs, 12 in love seats, and 5 in chairs. Back support springs are 11 gauge springs, insulated with Typar lining.

All furniture is hand crafted by highly trained professionals.

That’s quality furniture. All goods reasons to really shop around and look into what you’re investing your money into. Buying a sofa made in Canada keeps the dollars in the country we live in, it also keeps you assured that you didn’t settle for second best or lower quality. If you don’t understand any of that, simply-put: “best of the best furniture”.

Don’t sacrifice quality for price.

Put your dollars where they matter; in our country!

The Oak St. Revival

The dream was extravagant, the idea simple; to beautify our waterfront, and attract citizens and tourists to our city core. The plan became equally as extravagant and elaborate. The beau-

tification plan includes: theatres, water play areas, mini train stations, gazebos, fountains, play-grounds, and more. This plan is expected to be implemented in four phases in a span of 10-15 years.

11

12

Oak Street, one of North Bay's wondrous one ways. In the past

few years Oak Street has underwent some extensive renova-

tions and remodeling.

The community waterfront Friends developed a plan that

would create sustainability for the waterfront and city core.

Plans began to come together as the time passed. With some

extensive landscaping, brick laying and paving alike, we

began to see the light.

Development then started with the pergola systems, a me-

morial section of the park to display the "leaves of inspiration".

These leaves could be purchased, and each purchase

would support the project to come. The leaves would then

be engraved and mounted on a metal pergola structure.

When the leaves started to be mounted we also seen trees

be planted in the park as well as benches put in place.

The remodeled municipal parking lot would also upgrade

the street with the new pavement, booths, and lighting and

a wonderful blue scheme to match the park and pergola.

Welcome " Fall " in Downtown North Bay!

When your strolling down Main and Oak Streets, make sure you look up and take a last admiring look at our "Downtown Banner Program". For the third year, many local artists , young and old , have contributed to our community by helping us decorate and pro-mote our downtown. Our theme this year was " Now and Then", and we received some beautiful, creative hand-painted banners.

19

Downtown North Bay (also known as the Downtown Improvement

Area) is a business improvement area organization that was formed in

1977. We are the elected representatives of the business community

in a very prescribed area within the heart of North Bay.

Our Mission Statement "To preserve and develop the heart of North

Bay" was adopted by the D.I.A in 1995 and remains their primary ob-

jective. The Downtown Improvement Area works to achieve this goal.

The D.I.A concentrates on tourism, business retention and expansion,

and promotions. Festivals and special events are held at various times

throughout the year in an effort to increase traffic levels, enhance the

profile of the Downtown and strengthen investor confidence in the

Downtown core.

We welcome the business Brown Media to North Bay and wish their

owners Justin & Samantha Brown all the best in their inaugural

magazine.

For those who are unfamiliar with this event, the Down-town Gallery Hop is an event where galleries, studios and retailers alike open their doors to create an evening of art, culture and shopping in the downtown of North Bay approximately every two months. This event is becoming more and more popular within the commu-nity and proceeds to expand its boundaries and success.

The event was unofficially founded March 2009 by W.K.P. Kennedy Gallery coordinator Alex Maeve Campbell as an initiative through her Gallery position. The first Hop event was stumbled-upon when the W.K.P. Kennedy Gallery, The White Water Gallery, and Art on Main all had opening receptions scheduled for that same wondrous March Eve-ning. This was inspirational to them all. The galleries then found structure and inspiration from other similar initiatives like Hamilton's Art Crawl and James Street North SuperCrawl. They began to approach other galleries with their inspiration and vision. Of which Joan Ferneyhough at Ferney-hough Contemporary was quick to see the potential in this initiative.

21

The first Hop brought many familiar smiles to the streets, from the

fun that was had at this inaugural event. From that point on the

event began to schedule and orchestrate more of these events. As

each event went on, more studios, galleries and even tattoo studios

began to see the vision and take part of the event. Commercial arts and

culture venues also joined the event and now the event keeps growing

and growing. This event continues to attract arts and culture venues as

well as a new audience and brings them to our downtown.

Page 23: What's going on Downtown North Bay

This event has become an essential

part of North Bay's Arts and Culture

Scene, as well as giving the community

another amazing event to attend down-

town North Bay. If you have any questions

about the Downtown Gallery Hop feel free

to contact Alex Maeve Campbell at W.K.P.

The Discovery North Bay Museum has recently acquired an exciting new collection. The Gateway Theatre Guild has graciously donated their scrapbooks dating back to 1948 and detailing nearly every performance and festival since then. The books

contain programs, newspaper articles, photographs, and posters.

Organized in North Bay in September 1948 the Gateway Theatre Guild began with a membership of 50. The first production “Gateway Gaieties”, a musical review, was live on stage. The Guild was “launched primarily for the development of drama and theatrical art in the North with costs of production born by membership”. In 1949 the first Northern Ontario drama festival took place in Sudbury with seven groups from cities throughout the North. As the Gateway Theatre Guild evolved it brought people from all over North Bay and gave them an opportunity to perform. The diversity of the group allowed for dramatic, tragic, and comedic productions. Members paid the cost involved with productions but also received donations from groups within the community. In 1974 while adjudicating Mr. Canino was full of praise for the people of the Guild commenting that the group had impressed him in the amount and variety of work they had done in the past. He believed they were a hard

working group and the cast had a good mix of new actors and a core of experienced people.

28

With a community theatre group, people are devoting their time because they want too. Performing creates a rapport between audience and actor, which is based on love of craft and respect for same. There are many people who have been involved with the Gateway Theatre Guild and who have received many acknowledgments and awards that could not be mentioned. With amateur theatre “it not only entertains but fosters an appreciation and awareness for the theatre arts. It is also a stepping stone to the pro-fessional stage and deserves everyones support” as commented by Betty Speers to the North Bay Nugget in 1987. The Gateway Theatre Guild is ongoing with many positive new developments and changes; they continue to expand.

Research conducted for this article provided enough information to publish a book. To preserve the history of North Bay, researchers can utilize the material on a wide variety of subjects available in the archives. With our recent move to Canadore College, the Discovery North Bay Museum archives has been able to expand and become more accessible to the community. Our new space allows an area for research part of which is community group records and the existing large paper collection with

articles, posters, photographs and other memorabilia, plus the Ontario Northland Railway archives. To book an appointment, or to make a research inquiry please contact Naomi Rupke at 705-476-2323. Research and reproduction fees may apply to re-quests or appointments, please contact for further details, or visit our website @discoverynorthbay.com.
