    PARKING LOT PROCEDURES

With the extreme cold weather and snow, many families choose to pick

up their child from school rather than have them walk. This has created

confusion in the parking lot. If you are picking up your child, please

    respect the following:

The lane between the school and the parking lot is a “Kiss and Ride”

NOT a parking lot. Do NOT park your car and leave your car.

If you need to park and get out of your car, you MUST use

appropriate parking spots in the parking lot, not the “kiss and ride”.

Pull your car to the farthest available spot along the curb. You MUST

pull up as far as you can so that other cars can pull up behind you.

Do NOT double park. The “Kiss and Ride” is not designed to have two

    lanes for stopping.

The parking lot traffic is designed to go one-way.

Do NOT stop or park on the curve (marked with red) as you will be

blocking access to the whole lane.

If asked, respectfully pull your car up or circle around the hoop one

    more time.

Please be respectful of these practices. Student safety is our utmost

    concern. ——————

The following girls have been registered in

the Girls on the Run program running on

Monday and Wednesdays at 3:25 to 4:40

p.m. The program starts on April 7th and

    will go until June 2nd.

    CARNIVAL

Our Carnival day on Monday February 24th was a great success! The students were so excited and had so much fun! They

enjoyed playing the outdoor games and decorating their classroom door for our

annual competition amongst the grades. It was so nice to see the students so engaged in all the activities throughout the

day. This year our theme for carnival was the Olympics which made the day that

    much more special.

On behalf of the staff and students, we thank all of our parent volunteers for all of

their hard work throughout the day. We would also like to mention that the hot

    chocolate was especially delicious this

    year!

    OLYMPIC FEVER !

    Congratulations Team Canada on an

excellent demonstration of athletic ability at the Winter Olympics. At Windham Ridge, we helped celebrate our athletes every day of the

Olympics. Whenever the Canadian team won a gold medal, the next day we all wore red and

white to help cheer on the athletes. Thank you to the various classes and students who helped to make banners, charts, and pictures to

    display our Olympic enthusiasm.

The grade seven classes have been

working on Forces and Structures Unit

since January. One of the curriculum

expectations for this unit is to “describe

changes that could be made in personal

spaces and activities” based on the

evaluation of the impact of ergonomic

    design. (Science Curriculum 2007) In

order to meet this expectation, the grade

seven students divided into groups and

assessed the workstation of various school

    personnel. Based on their assessment,

    they made recommendations to help

    improve each workstation. These

    recommendations could prevent injury

    such as repetitive strain injury.

Earlier in the unit, the students were

challenged to build a model of a scaffold

    measuring 30cm x 15cm x 7.5cm. This

scaffold had to weigh as little as possible so

that it could be easily transported from

worksite to worksite, and it had to support

a load of 4kg (the weight of a newborn

baby). The only materials permitted were

paper, straws, glue and tape. The pictures

below show two scaffolds that weighed

0.3kg and 0.24kg and were able to support

a student in the first grade! (Don’t worry

the grade 1 students were safe at all

    times).

Congratulations to our young engineers ...

    WRPS BRIDGE BUILDING TEAM

On Saturday, March 1st, 2014, the Professional Engineers of Ontario hosted a Design Challenge. Grade 5-6 students were challenged to construct a bridge using Lego or K'Nex. WRPS had six teams in this challenge. Team members included: Duncan Esliger,

Nicholas Perera, Daniel Almeida, Dan Popov, Sinead Azam, Mary Gefter, Lexy Hunt-Larkin, Dana Nepton, Christopher Martelli, James Lee, Nikita Neyshtadt, Salim Kanji, Lucas

DiGregorio, Valery Volkova and Olivia Zaremski. Bridges were judged based on their

efficiency: the load the bridge can support divided by the weight of the ridge.

Lexy, Mary and Sinead placed third in the K'Nex division of this competition!

Duncan, Nicholas, Mary, Lexy and Sinead made the news at http://www.yorkregion.com/

news-story/4392373-students-learn-to-build-bridges-relationships-during-engineering-competition/! All the students were enthusiastic and creative, and they had a lot of fun at

the competition. WRPS is proud of all the competitors.

    ON-TIME ARRIVAL

Students are encouraged to be on time for school, as late arrivals not only cause

anxiety for the child who is late but it also causes disruptions to the class which is

    already in session.

Here at Windham Ridge, students should be in class at 8:40 for morning announcements

    and attendance.

After this time, students must report to the office for a late slip.

Students who arrive late and during DPA must wait in the office until their class returns.

The student will then miss out on their daily physical activity with their class.

    ARTS PERFORMANCES

Thanks to the generous arts package

contributions, our students have had the opportunity to experience a variety of arts experiences. Most recently, the grades

6,7,8, went to the Richmond Hill Theatre to see a performance for Black History

month, and grades 1-3 experienced a Tribal Vision Presentation here at the school. The grades 4 and 5 are looking

forward to their trip to Richmond Hill Theatre in May! The various arts

performances are an engaging way for the drama/dance curriculum to really come to

    life!

    ARTS NIGHT CONCERT

On February 13th Windham Ridge was

proud to host an arts night concert. Thank you to Mr. Cipollone for the grade 6 dra-

matic poetry presentations and band, Mme Macoretta for the grade seven dance per-formances, Mme Rozenberg, Mme Dahesh,

and Mme Suleman for the grade three song and dance production. Bravo to Mme

Rouse and Mme Hadfield for coordinating the entire event. Overall it was a beautiful concert and well attended by fami-

lies. Thank you for all your support! We look forward to another concert in the

    spring.

    CLASSROOM PLACEMENT

Just a reminder that parent input

regarding class placement is welcomed up to April 1, 2014. Please keep in mind that we are not looking for specific teacher

requests, but if you have insight into your child’s learning styles and needs that are

applicable to class placement please let us know. Also, if you know of peer partnerships that are either welcome or

don’t work well in a classroom setting, please note that this is also valuable

information. Please send an email to

    Athena Loopstra or Veronique O’Malley.

    GIRLS INTERMEDIATE

    BASKETBALL

The senior girls basketball team had a great season! They worked extremely hard and showed teamwork in every way. The girls finished up 3rd in their area tournament! We are very proud of their achievement!

    PLANNING ON MOVING

We have begun to plan our school

organization for the next school year.

Please let the school office know as soon

as possible if you are planning to move

and will not be returning to Windham

    Ridge in September.

CONCERT BAND TO KIWANIS In February, our Concert Band went to Kiwanis in Toronto to participate in their annual

music festival. Our Band received 1st in the Challenge Class, and a Silver award in the grade 8 and under class. We had a fun time, learned a lot, and we are looking forward to

our next competition April 17th under the moniker, "The Windham Firecrackers." Our Band members represent our school with excellence through their conduct and performances.

Our intermediate Glee club will be performing at competition on April 22nd under the name, "The Windham Heartbreakers."

    Well done!
