Welcome back Whiteoaks Families!

We are starting a brand new year at Whiteoaks. The floors are polished, the walls are painted, pencils are sharp-

ened and staff are ready to welcome new students to their classes. We are excited to begin a new year . Our priority

will be to provide learning environments where students not only grow academically but socially, physically and emo-

tionally.

This newsletter contains lots of important start up information as do the front pages of the student agenda. Please

set aside some time to read through both these documents. It is important to note our new NO CHOCOLATE proto-

col. We have an individual who has a severe medical reaction to chocolate. We would ask everyone who uses our

building to follow this protocol.

As we begin a new school year, it is important to review routines and safety rules with the community As you are

aware Whiteoaks is a very busy place at morning entry and afternoon dismissal. Please review the Kiss and Ride

procedures that are found in this newsletter and the student agenda. We are really working hard at training the stu-

dents not to cut across the driveway but rather use the sidewalks. We would ask that parents please model this be-

havior for our students.

On Friday, students will be bringing home important forms and letters that will need to be read . Many of these

forms will need to be filled out and returned to the school. Please watch for these letters and forms to come home

on Friday.

We will be hosting a community barbeque and open house on Thursday September 28th. We will be sending more

details home closer to the date. We look forward to seeing you all then.

Happy New Year!

Ms. L. Lee

Health Information

Medication

Any parent who wishes the school to administer any medication must obtain an authorization form (Form A) from

the school office and have it completed by the child’s doctor. Any medication brought to school including for exam-

ple, Epi-pens, inhalers, cough syrup, aspirin or Tylenol must have a Form A completed on annual basis.

If your child needs an Epi-pen, please make sure that the office is aware of the severity of the allergy. It is crucial

that this information be noted accurately in our student information system. Students should be wearing their Ep-

ipens in a fanny pack so they are with them at all times. An spare one can be left in the office.

Students who require puffers should keep them in their backpacks so that they have easy access to them.

New Protocol—No Chocolate

Please refrain from bringing ANY chocolate, including

unopened items, to our school. An individual at our

school experiences a severe medical reaction when

exposed to chocolate. Thank you for keeping our

school safe and inclusive for all.

Keeping lunches, snack peanut-free

Anaphylaxis is a potentially life-threatening allergic re-

action that affects some children. We ask that you help

us take care of these students by sending lunches and

snacks for your child that are free from peanuts or nuts,

because these foods are the leading cause of anaphy-

laxis.

Please read the label of any food you plan to send to

school with your child. If the label says, "May contain

nuts or peanuts," please do not send it to school.

You can get a complete copy of the Peel board's ana-

phylaxis guideline at

www.peelschools.org under

the Parent tab, under Student

Health.

Upcoming Events

Dropping Off Lunches

We understand that students occasionally forget their lunch and that parents need

to come to school to drop one off. When a student’s lunch is forgotten, parents are

asked to leave lunches labeled with student and teacher names at the “Drop

Zone” on the tables in the front foyer just outside the office. Lunches /items left in

the drop zone are delivered to classrooms at the beginning of each nutrition

break. If the lunch-drop is unexpected, we will call your child down to pick up his/

her lunch. In order to maintain a safe environment and continuity of program, par-

ents are not to go directly to classrooms.

Pizza Days

Pizza Days will resume again this year ! This year pizza will be offered every Thurs-

day. We have changed vendors this year and will be using Dominoes. Pizza days

will begin on October 5th. Payment for pizza days will only be done through

School Online.

Kiss and Ride

The Kiss and Ride Program makes school drop-off and pickup easier, but it only works if everyone follows the Kiss

and Ride guidelines. Please help our school's Kiss and Ride system run smoothly by following the Kiss and Ride

markings on the pavement, and by stopping only at the designated drop-off areas. Please be reminded that all

exits from the parking lot are one way only and that all vehicles are to exit school property using the Kiss and Ride

lane.

You can help keep the Kiss and Ride running smoothly by:

having your child prepared for a quick exit from your vehicle (e.g., backpack ready to go as the vehicle ap-

proaches its stop)

waiting for a Kiss and Ride adult to indicate that it is safe for your child to disembark the vehicle (staff wear

vests)

saying goodbye to your child and exiting the drop-off area, stopping only long enough for your child to dis-

embark your vehicle

not turning off your vehicle, but placing your vehicle in park when your children exit the vehicle

not stopping your vehicle in the “thru” lane or blocking bus access to the drop-off area not exiting your car

in the Kiss and Ride area – if you need to walk your child into school, please park your car in the church

parking lot or on a nearby street not stopping in the drop-off lane to access vehicle storage compartments

for projects. If it is necessary to transport a large project to school, please park your car in the church park-

ing lot or on a nearby street and carry the project into the school respecting the directions of duty staff at all

times

It is important for student safely that motorists follow the Kiss and Ride procedures as noted above and in this

map.

Safety Reminders

Safety Reminders

Parking in Front of the School

As you exit our school driveway, please note that note there is NO PARKING/STOPPING to the left and right of

the driveway. Cars parked in these spots make it impossible for the school buses to safely leave the driveway.

Please don’t forget that there is no parking on the west side of Mazo (across from the driveway). The space is

very tight on Mazo Crescent, so it is important to follow these parking rules. This will allow our buses to come in

and out easily.

No Parking No Parking

Bicycles and Scooters

Students are reminded that they should be walking their bicycles and scooters as soon as they reach the

school . For the safety of the cyclists and pedestrians, students should walk their bicycles/scooters in the park-

ing lot and in the playground. Don’t forget that students on bicycles and scooters should be wearing helmets to

keep them safe. Bicycles/Scooters should be locked on the bike rack at the junior doors or the bike rack at the

front of the building.

Parking in the Church Lot

We are fortunate to have a good working relationship with Christ Church, the community church sharing property with

our school. Christ Church generously shares parking for our students and parents to accommodate student pickup

and drop-off. I would ask that you review our parking agreement with Christ Church as outlined below. I thank you for

always respecting these procedures.

Our agreement with Christ Church is that at all times we adhere to the following parking procedures:

In the main church parking lot on Mazo Crescent (facing, and across from the church) parking spaces designat-

ed for church staff members are to be used by Christ Church staff only.

Keep the parking circle adjacent to the main church entrance doors clear. Our agreement with Christ Church is

that anyone accessing Whiteoaks Public School should not use this space to park or stop, or to pick up or drop

off students. This parking circle is used as a pick-up and drop-off area for the Day Care located in the church,

and should not be used by Whiteoaks parents/guardians. Pickup and drop-off in this area are exclusively for

the use of the Day Care.

Ensure designated handicap parking spots are free to be accessed by handicapped drivers with accessibility

permits displayed in their vehicles only. These parking spots are governed by Ontario legislation and fines may

be levied for improper use. In addition, spots are frequently required for use by parishioners of Christ Church.

Park only in spaces designated as parking spots as outlined above.

Clearly, following these procedures not only demonstrates respect for our partnership with Christ Church and the gen-

erous use of their property by the school, but when guidelines are followed, supports the safety of our students and

parents. Thank-you for being mindful of our agreement with Christ Church and supporting the safety of all who access

both the church and our school.

Protect your kids—and your finances

The Peel District School Board does not provide accident insurance coverage for student injuries that occur on school property or during school activities including extracurricular sports. Each year, many of our families spend thou-sands of dollars when their children are injured at school, on field trips, while participating in non-school activities, or at home. If a student is injured, parent(s)/guardian(s) are responsible for any costs not covered by provincial health care

or their employer’s health plan. Please check with your provider regarding your coverage.

The provincial health care system does not cover costs which are commonly related to accidents including dental work, ambulance fees, casts and crutches, and physiotherapy. All of these are covered by Old Republic’s student ac-

cident insurance plan.

It is strongly recommended that all families consider this coverage, especially if your child participates in extracurricu-lar activities. The annual plans provide 24 hours a day, 365 days a year coverage. The insurance agreement is be-tween you and Old Republic Insurance Company. For more information call Old Republic Insurance Company toll

free at 1-800-530-5446.
