The Newsletter of St. John’s Episcopal School

Message From Our Headmaster, Jim Lusby

A prayer for the beginning of school (from The Cycle of Prayer for Episcopal Schools):

Let us thank God for bringing us together in the life of this school.

Dear God, at the beginning of things we turn to you, the beginning and end of everything. We pray for this school and for the life we will lead together. Help us to live in openness and respect for each other, with care for the heritage we share. Lead us to such love for each other that as knowledge grows, so may wisdom. Grant that we may begin to see the signs of justice in our common life. Help us to welcome new people to our school. Give us more hope for ourselves and our friends than we would ever dare to hope. Help us to make this the best school it can be and to make ourselves the best teachers, staff, students, and parents that we can be, so that we might make this the best world that it can be.

We pray in the name of the One who stands at the beginning and the end, God.

Amen. Back to School Nights

Character Corner Virtue of the Week for September 8-11—”Character”

Quote of the Week: “Be more concerned with your character than your reputation, because your character is what you really are, while your reputation is merely what others think you are.” John Wooden

The beginning of the school year is the perfect time to make some really important decisions. Will you determine to succeed where you may have fallen short in the past? What values or principles will guide you over the next nine months? Your parents and teachers can offer valuable advice as we begin this new school year at St. John’s. They can recommend what path to take. They can share the wisdom they have gained through their own experiences. But in the end, it is up to you to make the right choices. As we begin our new school year, practice taking responsibility for your actions. If you make a mistake, admit it. If you hurt someone’s feelings or say something you shouldn’t, apologize. Learning to be self-responsible is learning to be a person of character, and being a person of character is a goal we should all set for ourselves.

Development Office Grandparents Day 2008 St. John’s faculty and staff are looking forward to meeting the wonderful grandparents of our Kindergarten through Eighth Grade students at our annual Grandparents Day event on October 9, 2009. A request for grandparent information was mailed to all parents in July. If you have not yet responded to this request, please do so now, so that your child’s grandparents will receive their invitation. If you did not receive this form, or if you have any questions, please contact Gaylene MacRae at 858-5144, ext. 236, or by email at [email protected].

We’re Going to Maui! It is that time again! The William H. Hannon Foundation has once again offered St. John’s Episcopal School an easy way to raise money by providing the School with a one-week trip to Maui, including round-trip airfare and accommodations for two at the Royal Lahaina Resort, plus $500 credit in selected resort restaurants! A book of tickets is included in today’s Monday folder, and we know you will want to take a chance on winning this fabulous vacation package! If you would like extra books of

tickets, please contact Gaylene MacRae in the Development Office at 858-5144, ext. 236. The drawing will be held on Friday, October 9, 2009 at Grandparents Day. You need not be present to win.

A special note to our Preschool families: St. John’s invites you to participate in this great Hawaii opportunity drawing. Just return your ticket stubs and you will be contacted by telephone if you are the lucky winner! Mahalo!

Thank You! On behalf of St. John’s faculty and staff, many thanks to the Bishop’s Committee for hosting the “Welcome Back” breakfast and to the PTF for hosting lunch on the first day of Teacher Orientation Week, August 31...a tradition that is appreciated by all of us.

Thanks also goes out to St. John’s Episcopal School for hosting a faculty and staff lunch on Tuesday, September 1.

Our gratitude is also extended to Chef Gene and Cheri Guazzo for preparing all those scrumptious meals!
