DEPUTY PRINCIPAL’S REPORT

Welcome back to Term 3. We hope all students had an enjoyable and restful holiday period. It has been lovely to see students back this week ready for learning.

5 Cent Friday

The First four Fridays this term (27th July -17th August) will be ‘Five Cent Fridays”. Students are encouraged to scour the house – under beds, behind the lounge to find as many stray coins as possible. Coins will be collected by the P&C each Friday and funds raised will go towards supporting our students. There will be a prize for the class in each stage who collects the most coins.

NAIDOC Week

The 2018 NAIDOC week theme is 'Because of her, we can' which highlights the contributions of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander women across family, community and society. Our whole school NAIDOC week celebrations started yesterday Tuesday 24th July and will continue through to Friday 27th July.

NAIDOC week assemblies will take place in the school hall this Friday 27th July. K-2 from 12.50pm and Yr3-6 commencing at 2.25pm. All members of the community are welcome to attend.

NAIDOC Week merchandise will be sold throughout week 1 and week 2 (until sold out). These will be available for purchase each lunch and recess play time out the front of the library from today, Wednesday 25th July. Each item is $2.

• NAIDOC week pencil case • mini tennis ball

Education Week

On Tuesday 7th August, we will celebrate Education Week. The way that public schools are future-proofing their students to succeed in the 21st century will be the focus of Education Week 2018. The theme for this year’s Education Week is 'Today's schools – creating tomorrow's world'. At Wamberal Public School, we highly value our community partnerships with families and invite you all to share in this great celebration of Public Education. We hope to see many of you here for our assembly and open classrooms celebrating our many successes.

Attendance

Attendance is essential to maximise your child’s opportunity to learn. Please note it is the responsibility of parents to provide an explanation for absences to the school within 7 days from the first day of any period of absence. After this time, the absence is recorded as ‘unjustified’ and is unable to be altered. The 7 day timeframe for explaining absences is a requirement of the Education Act (1990).

Lateness is recorded as a partial absence and must be explained by parents. All absences are to be explained by parents within 7 days of the occurrence. Unexplained absences after this time will be recorded as unjustified and cannot be changed.

Students who achieve 100% attendance for each term are acknowledged with SRL tokens to purchase rewards at the end of the following term.

A simple and convenient way to notify the school of your child’s absence is via our Skoolbag APP. More information about downloading our APP is available here. You can also notify of absences via a telephone call to the school office, a written note or email to the school’s email address.

HELLO FROM THE LIBRARY IN TERM 3, WEEK 1

Welcome back to Term 3 which is always an exciting term in the library.

NAIDOC Week 2018 – “Because of her we can …”

In line with our Term 3 Library theme, “Find Your Treasure”, classes are learning about the value of our Indigenous cultures and the things which have traditionally been treasured by Indigenous Australians.

Students may participate in a Reading Australia colouring competition promoting a new Indigenous book called The Lizard Gang. Selected entries will be forwarded by the school to the external competition.

Children’s Book Council of Australia (CBCA) Annual Book Awards

“Find Your Treasure” is this year’s CBCA theme for Book Week in 2018. Book Week is held each year in Term 3 and is a great opportunity to explore some of Australia’s best new children’s books and revisit past award winners. The CBCA promotes five different book awards suitable for primary-aged children. Winners will be announced in Week 5. Stay tuned for more information about our special Book Week activities including a visiting performance and dress-up activity.

What are you reading? This week we have two student reviews of book series — by Sean H and Lucy B of 1 Green.

Sean H recommends the ‘Grug’ series by Ted Prior: I like this series because Grug always learns something in every book. I learn something from the books too because it’s easy to read and full of adventure and mystery. There are lots of problems but my favourite thing about the problems is that they are always fixed in the end.

Lucy B recommends the ‘Elephant & Piggie’ series: I like this series because they are friends and they are nice and they help.

Scholastic Book Club ‘Issue 5’ 2018

Scholastic Book Club Issue 5 brochures will be delivered this week: orders will close Monday, 13th August. Please order online as cash purchases are not available. Follow the simple instructions on the Book Club brochure or on the Scholastic Book Club website. Please contact me in the library for any enquiries.

Happy reading, Mrs Knight Teacher Librarian

CHESS CLUB Every Tuesday and Thursday at recess, students go to Mr Foyel’s room to play or learn to play chess. This is a great opportunity that many students from all over the school enjoy. This term, students have also been selected to represent WPS in either the ‘Championship’ or ‘Rookie’ Chess Teams. Each week, four students from these two teams play against students from other schools. This means, other school will come to our school as home games or we will travel to other schools as away games. This has been a great way for us to improve our skills and make new friends.

Last week, the ‘Rookie’ team played against Kariong PS. It was a lot of fun and we were lucky enough to win 3 ½ points to ½ point. We would like to thank Mr Foyel and all the wonderful parents who have helped transport both teams throughout the term.
