From the Director

It’s springtime and Adelaide warms and stretches after the chill of a winter slumber. Time to engage that brain and get involved in some of our great activities over the next few months!

Don’t miss our new exhibition in the FutureSpace Gallery. Called Energy Landscapes: the new frontier, it explores the interplay between the land and the energies that flow through it. Energy Landscapes runs until 25 November and ties into our contributions to the World Solar Challenge. We’ll be following the progress of those solar-powered vehicles as they trek their way from Darwin to Adelaide. Along the way we will be putting on a string of events in regional areas of both the Northern Territory and South Australia.

Then there’s the Adelaide Festival of Ideas – a thinking person’s celebration of thinking! I’ll be hosting a big event in the Adelaide Town Hall as part of the festival where we will explore the possibility of living to a thousand years old. There’s also a forum at the Science Exchange on transforming technologies that might change the way we live. It’s an exploration of zero-emission cities, regenerative medicine and synthetic meat.

Of course we are extremely proud to host Australian astronaut Andy Thomas at the Science Exchange for the RiAus October Lecture. This is a chance for year 8-10 students to meet Andy and be inspired. It’s sure to be a sell-out – so get in early! We’ll also be providing a live feed of this event to schools throughout Australia.

We’ll put our state on show to the world through TEDxAdelaide, yet another great think-fest. Be prepared for inspirational presentations of ideas about which you may simply have never heard!

As you’ll see in this program, there’s lots more on offer from RiAus this spring and don’t forget we open our bar on Friday nights for a more relaxed, casual meeting place. Maybe I’ll see you there?

Dr Paul Willis, Director, RiAus

Energy Landscapes: the new frontierFriday 16 September–Friday 25 NovemberMonday to Thursday 10am–5pm, Friday 10am–8pm, and during RiAus eventsToday we live within the new frontier of industrial energy landscapes, relying on these environments for power. Painter Robert Habel and filmmaker Cole Larsen enmesh themselves in established and emerging industrial landscapes. This includes the so– called ‘alternative’ energy landscape with its numerous titles: renewable, clean green, low emissions, carbon neutral and planet friendly. These environments are now host to solar farms, wind farms, geothermal, biomass and tidal energy. The artists collaborate to uncover an aesthetic appeal from these contemporary landscapes while delving into the debate about the use/misuse of these environments and our hunger for resources and energy.

RiAus Adelaide Reef revisitedNext RiAus Adelaide Reef Workshop Thursday 17 November, 6–8pmIf you didn’t get a chance to experience the RiAus Adelaide Reef during SALA, we’re giving you the opportunity to discover it anew. From early December, the FutureSpace Gallery will once again be overrun with the stunning creations of the RiAus Adelaide Reef crocheting community. Entwining hyperbolic geometry, marine ecology and clever crafting, the RiAus Adelaide Reef has been one of our most popular exhibitions. Visit for the first time or revisit and bring your friends and family along during December and January.

For professional events in a central location, the landmark Science Exchange building resonates with history. Formerly the Adelaide Stock Exchange, the building has been stunningly refurbished and retains many of its original features. Inside there are five unique spaces, ranging from heritage to contemporary with services, facilities and technology for your conference, product launch, meeting, wedding or Christmas party.
