    Exhibitions Display

Object Journeys Fashioning Africa Continues to 31 March 2019 FASHION GALLERY AND WORLD STORIES GALLERY These two displays feature stunning new objects collected by Brighton Museum as part of the Fashioning Africa project, and objects loaned from the British Museum, reflecting changing fashion practices. Townships Journeys showcases textiles and beadwork from South Africa and Aso-oke, a celebration of style features textiles and garments from Nigeria.

Co-curated with Fashioning Africa Collecting Panel members Edith Ojo and Tshepo Skwambane and part of a collaborative project with the British Museum called Object Journeys, a three year Heritage Lottery Fund funded programme. This national programme aims to support community partners to research and explore museum collections and create new displays in response to this investigation.

All the King’s Horses: The story of the Royal Stables and Riding School2 April to 29 September 2019PRINTS & DRAWINGS GALLERYThis new display showcases unusual and rarely-seen images of the Royal Stables and George IV’s love for all things equestrian. Sourced exclusively from the city’s own collections, it tracks the story of George’s passion for horses from his first visits to Brighton in the 1780s to the creation of the magnificent new stables complex (now the Dome and Corn Exchange), built between 1803 and 1808.

The Elaine Evans Archaeology Gallery New gallery opens 26 January 2019

At the heart of this brand new family friendly Archaeology gallery are seven forensically accurate 3D facial reconstructions revealing the faces of our ancestors and the people who would have been present in and around Brighton and Hove from the Ice Age to the Saxon era.

Using modern scientific technology, research into the lives of people buried in Brighton and Hove has discovered a wealth of mystery, drama and tragedy through stories of toothache, malnutrition, childbirth and possibly murder!

Now you can see exactly what these people looked like and explore the local environment through digital reconstructions. Marvel at mysterious objects that were found in Brighton and Hove. What were Sussex Loops for exactly? How did the world famous Bronze Age Amber Cup come to be here? And what is the story of the beautiful Woodingdean Stag?

Follow the story of time-traveller Elva as she journeys through the centuries in a specially commissioned set of children’s stories by local children’s author Imogen White and local artist Jennifer Khatun, and listen to the ambient sounds of our prehistoric ancestors at work. Many of the items in the new gallery have not been on public display for over 20 years.

It is now the largest collection representing trans people in the UK – if not the world. This display challenges the idea that gender is fixed, binary and biologically determined by exploring how the objects reflect the participants’ self-determined gender journeys.

Queer Looks is a collaborative project with the Centre for Fashion Curation at the London College of Fashion and has been supported with a grant from the Heritage Lottery Fund.

    The Royal Pavilion

Stephen Jones Hats at the Royal Pavilion 7 February to 9 June 2019 Free with Royal Pavilion admission, members free

Hat-maker to the stars, Stephen Jones OBE takes over the Royal Pavilion in a dazzling new exhibition, showcasing some of his most famous designs. The Royal Pavilion has long been an inspiration to Jones and many of his hats reflect the wonderful, whimsical, radical nature of the Royal Pavilion, specifically his Spring/Summer 2012 collection Chinoiserie-on-Sea.

Stephen Jones burst on to the London fashion scene during its explosion of street style in the late seventies. By 1980, Jones had opened his first millinery salon in the heart of London’s Covent Garden. It soon became a place of pilgrimage and patronage, as everyone from rock stars to royalty, from Boy George to Diana, Princess of Wales, identified Jones as the milliner who would help them make arresting headlines.

The site-specific exhibition shows hats worn by celebrities, including Lady Gaga and Diana, Princess of Wales and also those made in collaboration with the world’s best fashion designers, including Dior, Thom Browne, Giles Deacon and Comme des Garçons.
