“WHAT’S ON AT THE MILL?On milling days see the magnificent watermill in action, and find out about this ancient craft from our friendly millers.

Feel its power as the stones turn to make pure fresh flour the traditional way. See the waterwheel turning and get close to the majestic wooden machinery in all its glory.

Buy a bag of freshly milled organic stoneground wholemeal flour to take home and get baking!

Milling Times: Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday, and Sunday afternoons during museum opening hours.

Milling hours are subject to demand for flour, weather conditions or necessary repairs. Please note the miller takes a lunch break in the middle of each day.

During the summer months making flour can become a bit disjointed, for with the hotter weather and lack of rain the water level goes down. This means the water wheel will start to turn well, but quickly slows down, causing the stones to turn too slowly. When this happens we have to close the sluice gate to allow the River Lea to fill our leat with sufficient water to power the mill again.

However, this does allow more visitors to witness us manually starting up the mill throughout the day. This always brings a gasp as the waterwheel begins to rotate and you can hear the rush of water underneath.
