WHAT’S NEW IN 2010?

IT’S OUR PARK!

After more than a year of negotiations, Britt has signed a new 50-year lease with Jackson County for our home in Britt Gardens, which includes the Britt park and the pavilion. While the County remains the owner, this new lease places the park in Britt’s hands year-round, giving us greater opportunities for using the park, and also making us solely responsible for its maintenance and care.

In the past, Jackson County collected a portion of our ticket revenues in the form of a tax to help maintain the park. Now that the park is under our care, Britt will be collecting and keeping those funds. Rather than build them into the ticket price, however, we’ll list a $3 park fee as an add on, so our patrons know exactly how those funds will be spent. Ticket prices will be correspondingly lower. The funds these fees provide will go a long way to helping us maintain our beautiful Britt hill, and will help us build toward a more sustainable future. Every dollar collected from park fees will go directly into care and maintenance of the park. We hope to soon begin some much-needed restoration work on the pavilion and the grounds. Stay tuned!

This fee means that there’s a new item on your member ticket order forms. Please note that you’ll have to total the park fee as you select your concerts, and each ticket (with the exception of classical concerts and complimentary tickets) will need to have a $3 park fee added to it.

Thank you for helping keep the Britt park beautiful!

likes of Sheryl Crow, who raved about Carlile, “She has the most amazing voice I may have ever heard. Soulful. Country. THE BLACK CROWES

Right from their start in 1990, The Black Crowes’ debut album Shake Your Moneymaker sold over 5 million albums and kick-started an authentic style of rock ‘n’ roll in America. The Black Crowes’ music is a heady mix of rock ‘n’roll, funkadelic soul, blues, gospel and heartfelt roots. While the sheer attitude and charm of

their many hits like “Hard To Handle,” “Twice As Hard,” “Remedy” and “She Talks toAngels” managed to make big waves, the intervening years have seen the band steadily evolve an increasingly refined, singular sound that combines the best parts of hard rock, gospel, country, psychedelia and anything else it fancies. COURT YARD HOUNDS

As the mainstays of the Dixie Chicks since they formed the group in 1989, Emily Robison and Martie Maguire have been familiar faces to many millions of fans, yet just a little mysterious in thatfamiliarity, content as they were to cede the lead vocalist positionand remain music’s most recognizable “sidewomen.” Chicks fans

couldn’t help but hear those ever-present harmonies and wonder if Emily and Martie might ever come out from hiding in plain sight. That’s just what they’ve done in their newly hatched incarnation as Court Yard Hounds, with a gorgeously assured debut album that has the siblings sounding like they’ve been fearless frontwomen all their lives. Michael Franti & Spearhead return to the Britt hill for another electrical live performance. Franti is a very big man who has always dared to say very big things through his joyous and passionate music. Yet for all the wide-ranging, yet consistent excellence of his music, what’s most impressive about Franti is his ability to

inspire. His most recent album, All Rebel Rockers, reinforces his place as a global force and a true musician of his time. Its first single, “Say Hey (I Love You)” quickly became one of the biggest of Franti’s career.

BARENAKED LADIES / Angel Taylor

Founded in 1988 by Ed Robertson and Steven Page, Barenaked Ladies took Canada by storm, and over the next decade-plus, their albums Gordon, Rock Spectacle, Stunt and Maroon went multi-platinum in the U.S. The band became a top-selling, award-winning concert draw across North America and the U.K. with their frenetic

blend of high-energy melodic-pop, crack musicianship and spontaneous repartee. After 20 years, Barenaked Ladies releases All In Good Time this spring, their 11th album, and their first as a new four-piece band. The album finds Robertson, Jim Creeggan, Kevin Hearn and Tyler Steward exploring what they call a very creative and fertile phase of their band career.

THE NEW PORNOGRAPHERS

The indie rock band The New Pornographers has received critical and popular acclaim (along with numerous solo ventures from band members A.C. Newman, Neko Case, Dan Bejar and Kathryn Calder). The band enjoys an incredible amount of bench strength in at least two startlingly good songwriters, three spectacularly

good singers, one of the best drummers in contemporary music and an in-house filmmaker. Champions of the popular song, The New Pornographers are unable to resist the challenge to make a perfect album. Their fifth album Together is due out in May.

The Dodos

The Dodos’ wildly-percussive style is centered around two key elements: the punchy percussion of Logan Kroeber and the Fahey-infused finger-picking of frontman Meric Long. Their third album

Time to Die expands the Dodos’ Ginsu-sharp sound with the introduction of new band member Keaton Snyder.

Imaad Wasif

Singer-songwriter Imaad Wasif will open the concert. Described as “unbelievably intense with sparkling, raga-influenced guitar,” he

co-wrote several songs for the suondtrack “Where the Wild Things Are” (2009).

GENGHIS BLUES Fri., Aug. 27 • 8:45 p.m.

Paul Pena has played blues with the greats T-Bone Walker, B.B. King and Bonnie Raitt. In 1995, the blind bluesman became the first American ever to compete in an unusual contest of multi-harmonic “throatsinging.” The Autonomous Republic of Tuva, wedged between Siberia and Mongolia, has been isolated from the rest of the world for centuries by jagged mountains and Soviet restrictions, and only recently has the Tuvan art of throatsinging

become known to outsiders. In 1995, eleven years after he first heard throatsinging on a shortwave radio, Pena entered the National Theatre of Tuva to make history, as he incorporated throatsinging into his blues music. His performance was so well received, he captured the “audience favorite” award for the week-long competition. Genghis Blues is the story of a man whose struggle in life is not defined by conformity and rules, but by an unquenchable curiosity and love of music.

JEFFREY BIEGEL / Britt Festival Orchestra

Jeffrey Biegel enjoys a multi-faceted career as a pianist, composer and arranger. He’s praised by many for his energetic playing, adventurous spirit and electrifying technique. In addition to performing the great standard works, Biegel has championed new works.

In 1997, Biegel performed the first global real audio/video cybercast piano recital from New York’s Steinway Hall, and followed that with the first such European cybercast from Amsterdam. In 1999, he assembled the largest consortium of orchestras at the time (27 orchestras) to celebrate the millennium with a new work called “The Millennium Fantasy for Piano and Orchestra,” composed for him by Ellen Taaffe Zwilich.

He has also created new arrangements and editions of works by composers including Schumann, Balakirev and Billy Joel. EMANUEL AX / Britt Festival Orchestra

One of the most beloved pianists performing today, Emanuel Ax has played with countless orchestras and won superlative accolades since he first captured public attention in 1974 when he won the first Arthur Rubinstein International Piano Competition. A native of Lvov, Poland, Ax moved to Canada with his family when he was a child.

In addition to performing the standard masterworks, Ax has turned his attention in recent years toward the music of 20th-century composers, including John Adams, Bright Sheng and Christopher Rouse. He is also devoted to chamber music, and has worked regularly with artists including Yo-Yo Ma, Edgar Meyer, Peter Serkin and Jaime Laredo. Recent projects included a tour of Asia with the New York Philharmonic and a tour of Europe with both the Chamber Orchestra of Europe and the Pittsburgh Symphony. He will perform Brahms’ Piano Concerto No. 1 at Britt.

Ax has recently become a champion of loosening up the etiquette regarding applause at orchestra concerts. He says on his blog, “I really hope we can go back to the feeling that applause should be an emotional response to the music, rather than a regulated social duty.

JENNIFER FRAUTSCHI / Britt Festival Orchestra

Avery Fisher Career Grant recipient Jennifer Frautschi (pronounced: frouchy) has gained acclaim as an adventurous performer with a wide-ranging repertoire. Selected by Carnegie Hall for its Distinctive Debuts series, she made her New York recital debut in 2004. Frautschi was born in Pasadena, California, and studied at Harvard, the New England Conservatory of Music and The Juilliard School.

As an active soloist and chamber performer, Frautschi compared performing to another fast-moving activity in an interview with the New Haven Register in 2005. She said, “The thing about performing is that you need incredibly quick reflexes, like a race car driver. Unless you are playing by yourself,” she points out, “things just keep getting thrown at you…so you need to have lightning-quick reflexes to deal with things, to negotiate the turns. This is part of what makes it so incredibly exciting, and why it can get some people freaked out.”

Frautschi has earned praise for her performances and recordings alike. The Seattle Post-Intelligencer wrote, “She is the real thing.” She will perform Bartok’s Violin Concerto No. 2 at Britt.

FAMILY CONCERT / Britt Festival Orchestra

ENCHANTMENT THEATRE COMPANY

For nearly 30 years, Enchantment Theatre Company has been producing innovative quality theater for children and their families, and for more than 20 years, they have been collaborating with symphony orchestras in productions designed to introduce young people to the magic of symphonic music. The Company presents inspiring classic tales using its special blend of magic, mask, pantomime, puppetry and music.

In this concert, the audience will follow Cinderella on her journey of self-discovery from her humble hearthside to her transformation into a princess. Along the way you will meet her ridiculous puppet step sisters, her fairy godmother and, of course, her prince charming. The orchestra plays the part of musical storyteller as the Enchantment Theatre Company brings Prokofiev’s humorous and evocative music to life.

Plan to come to the hill early and take part in Cinderella-themed pre-concert activities from 5:45 -7 p.m.

Saturday, August 21 • 7:30 p.m.

JON NAKAMATSU / Britt Festival Orchestra

One of the most sought-after pianists of his generation, Jon Nakamatsu enjoys a continuously expanding career based on a deep and illuminating musicality and a quietly charismatic performing style. He returns to Britt after an acclaimed performance in 2006 to play Rachmaninoff’s Piano Concerto No. 2 in 2010.

Nakamatsu initially won global attention in 1997 when he was named Gold Medalist of the Tenth Van Cliburn International Competition. He was also featured in a documentary film based on the competition entitled Playing with Fire. He has been touring ever since as a soloist, chamber musician and recitalist throughout the U.S., Europe and Japan. Nakamatsu has also toured with clarinetist Jon Manasse including performances at the National Gallery of Art in Washington, D.C. and in New York and Boston.
