In September, Caribbean Flamingos were added to the zoo’s animal family. The flamingos inhabit a new tropical paradise across from the Savanna Café. The brand new exhibit features a waterfall, wading pools, and a nesting island in addition to a 1,000-square-foot support building for the flock of 30 birds.

The zoo’s most popular attraction is the miniature train ride, which received a much-anticipated update for this season. Eager riders arriving at the newly named Investors Bank Turtle Back Junction can view the animal-themed topiaries added throughout the landscape. Once aboard, they will travel along a new route that brings the trains closer to the African Adventure exhibit. This allows riders to view giraffe, ostrich and eland from their seats. In addition, a brand new train tunnel featuring wild west themed storefronts was added. There are so

Dear Friend,

Warmer days and evenings are quickly approaching in Essex County as the weather heats up and winter chills are left behind. It’s a time to begin planning fun-filled activities for the whole family as schools end for the year and students are excited for their summer vacations.

We invite you to create lifelong memories by taking your children on an exotic animal adventure at Turtle Back Zoo, experience our newest exhibits including the African Penguin Exhibit and the Flamingo Exhibit, and enjoy a tranquil train ride through South Mountain Reservation. For those who love thrills, have fun conquering our Treetop Adventure and zip line, challenge your friends on our miniGOLF Safari or take a peaceful stroll around the waterfront during warm summer afternoons.

Join us for our 17th Annual Open House at Turtle Back Zoo in June to learn about our County offices, play games, win prizes and see the animals. Enjoy the various summer activities planned throughout Essex County including fireworks, the summer concert series in the parks, movies under the stars and various other activities suitable for the whole family.

Summer is also a perfect time to indulge in the arts and delve into culturally rich and inspirational works by visiting the diverse array of art galleries, museums and theaters. You can also visit some of our historical sites to learn about the great history of our County.

Together we will continue Putting Essex County First.

many unique details to the design that there is something new to see on every ride.

This season also marks the reopening of the Turtle Back Zoo Main Entrance. Through the winter months, the zoo’s admission areas were re-envisioned as an entry plaza to accommodate the growing attendance. The iconic turreted towers were preserved as service areas for Membership and Guest Relations inquiries. In addition to creating 10 admission lanes for members, guests and birthday party admissions, the project included updates to the party rooms, reptile area bathrooms, and a brand new administrative office. The office of Guest Relations operates from these new offices, stop by to take a look or to book your next party, event or group adventure at Turtle Back Zoo.

Armstrong, III, prominent museum director who loved color, organic forms and art.
