Current student Laura McLellan is in her third year of the Bachelor of Applied Arts – Interior Design degree program. The program is one of thirteen fully accredited degree programs at Humber, and combines practical on the job experience with a theory based curriculum.

When asked about her time spent at Humber so far, Laura shared her experiences and offered some insight for anyone considering a college education, and specifically for anyone considering a college degree program.

Q: Why Humber?

A: I chose Humber because I had previously gone to a university and found that the teaching style and education didn’t cater to my style of learning and would not prepare me for the working world. Through research and talking to my family and friends, I quickly realized that a college education would provide me with applicable hands on experience and knowledge about my profession. I chose Humber specifically because they

offered a degree level education in the field I wished to study.

Q: Why did you choose the Bachelor of Applied Arts – Interior Design program?

A: I always knew that I wanted to work in interior design. I found that the profession of Interior Design was a growing industry and decided to follow my passion, because you only live once! Humber’s program is a degree level program in a college atmosphere, which means that you get a high degree of education while learning in a great hands-on environment.

Q: What are some of the unique experiences you’ve had within your program?

A: We recently came back from a 10 day trip to Italy, which has fulfilled many of my dreams since studying art and architecture history in school. Also, the teachers are continually presenting us with opportunities for participation in design contests. Last semester the third and fourth year students took part in the IDEC (Interior Design Educators Council) student design competition, which was open nationally to all interior design programs. Three Humber teams were picked to move on to the next level!

Student Profile: Laura McLellan, Interior Design studentBy Megan Oquias, Recruitment Assistant

Q: What are the facilities like for Interior Design students?

A: We have our own sample library and workspace exclusively for Interior design students and there are design related clubs that encourage collaboration between all four years so that we become a united design program. With our smaller class sizes, we have a better connection with our teachers and other students. Our teachers help foster an open and accepting learning environment and as a result each class is respectful and more than willing to help each other out with our design problems.

Q: How is the curriculum?

A: Busy, busy, busy! Each day varies, but in each semester we take a studio class which is usually about 6 hours each week. Our program also focuses heavily on sustainable practices and creating spaces that will create a healthy environment to live, learn and work for both the people who inhabit these spaces and the earth. It was a bit intense the first year, but through the years, I have mastered the art of working efficiently and getting the job done well.

Q: What kind of projects do you do?

A: I have worked on all types of projects: residential, health care, hospitality, corporate and retail. We have covered a fair amount of the building sectors.

Q: Is there a co-op placement?

A: There is a co-op requirement in between our third and fourth year. I have yet to complete it, although I have been working within the industry for the past year at an architecture firm and am hoping to stay on throughout the summer.

Q: What are your plans for after you’ve completed your program?

A: I hope to use my design skills within a design firm for a couple of years and then open my own collaborative design firm that will incorporate multiple design disciplines, with a central focus on sustainable design.

Canadian Centre of Culinary Arts & Science (CCCAS)By Risha Toney, Recruitment Officer

November 2008 marked the official grand opening of the Canadian Centre of Culinary Arts and Science (CCCAS) at Humber. As the only training facility of its kind in North America, the CCCAS combines the latest in induction cooking and compression-operated refrigeration technology. Considered the most “green” and energy efficient cooking technology, induction workstations represent an 80% increase in energy saving compared to conventional technologies.

The lab features 24 student workstations, custom-designed ovens and ranges, a wine tasting area and a 48-seat lecture theatre. With high definition remote control cameras and screens the facility is television production ready. Through broadcast capabilities to the internet, wireless and distance learning opportunites create endless possibilites for Humber’s culinary students.

The new addition of this superior culinary teaching and training facility at Humber will put culinary students a step ahead. Students will be trained on past, present and future technologies that reflect the needs of the industry.

The CCCAS is the official training venue for Culinary Team Canada in preparation for the World Culinary Olympics and the World Cup. It will also host national and international competitions such as the Skills Canada and Ontario competitions, Knorr National and Provincial championships and Escoffier Culinary Salons.

Culinary students will also benefit from Humber’s award winning and internationally renowned faculty, including gold and silver medal winning members of Culinary Team Canada and Team Ontario, nationally recognized “Chef of the Year” and “Chef de Cuisine” and a Fellow of the Epicurean World Master Chefs Society.

Combined with Humber’s well-established Culinary Arts programs, the addition of the Canadian Centre for Culinary Arts & Science will help to ensure that graduates from Humber’s culinary programs continue to enjoy a 98% job placement rate.

In September 2008, more than 190 students began their studies in Humber’s five new Business degrees: e-Business Marketing; Fashion Management; Human Resources Management; International Business; and Tourism Management. The launch of these degrees was a major step forward for Professor of Economics Pierre-Pascal Gendron, who became Program Coordinator, Business Degrees in June of 2008.

A native of Montreal, Pierre-Pascal has a B.Sc. in Economics from the Université de Montréal, and then went on to complete an M.A in Economics at Queen’s University. His Ph.D. in Economics is from the University of Toronto. His professional experience includes work in the federal civil service, advising on transfer pricing and tax policy for professional services firms in Canada and the Netherlands, and a number of significant consulting projects for a mix of international, governmental, and non-governmental organizations. He joined Humber as a full-time faculty member with The Business School in 2003.

Along with his considerable professional experience, Pierre-Pascal also brings strong academic credentials to Humber, having published widely in the area of public economics, especially taxation. His work has been published in peer-reviewed journals, practitioner journals, monographs, and conference volumes.

When asked about his role as Program Coordinator, Pierre-Pascal describes it as a “one-stop shop.” He taught the first semester Microeconomics course to all new students last fall, and is currently teaching the second semester Macroeconomics course. This means Pierre-Pascal gets to know everyone in his programs first hand. As he puts it, “Students see me quite a bit in their first year and I get to know them, most by name at this point.” He also acts as academic advisor to all Business degree students, counseling them on all parts of the curriculum. Beyond his duties with current students, Pierre-Pascal acts as academic coordinator for enquiries from prospective students, both from within and outside Humber

and he hosts and participates in many events for both current and prospective students. He also liaisons with program advisory committee members and participates in program curriculum updates and development.

When asked what advice he would give to an incoming student, Pierre-Pascal says “Self-motivation, a good work ethic, and a supportive environment outside school are essential. The small details matter, like managing one’s time, especially maintaining the balance between studies and outside paid work, being well-informed, having a positive attitude towards learning the quantitative aspects of the discipline of business and being flexible enough to quickly handle unexpected situations—just like in the day-to-day conduct of a business.”

Humber’s five new business degree programs are designed with those details in mind. Students take the essential core business courses (e.g., Business Law, Introductory Accounting, Marketing, etc) during their first two years of study. Students from all five programs are mixed together and shuffled every semester so that they can meet their peers in other programs on a continuous basis. This allows them to create new working relationships with a wide range of students. Students specialize in their area of choice (e.g., International Business) during years three and four by taking courses specifically linked to their area. They must also do a full-time paid co-op work term during the summer between third and fourth year. This timing allows them to bring their work experience back to the classroom and learn more before making the jump to the full-time job market after graduation.

In uncertain economic times prospective students often have questions about job prospects. Pierre-Pascal says business graduates are well positioned because the business environment changes rapidly and that leads to new opportunities, even in times of economic slowdown. As well, the global scope of programs like International Business and e-Business Marketing give graduates the opportunity to go where the jobs are, rather than having to worry about conditions in their local market. Business students are in an even better position because a recession is a great time to be in school. As Pierre-Pascal says, “Students learn a lot watching the economy from the sidelines and discussing current events in a business context because I can tie my outside work and past experience into classroom activities.” With the guidance of professors like Pierre-Pascal, Humber’s Business degree grads will be well placed to succeed in Ontario’s changing economy.

Further details about The Business School’s degree programs can be found at www.business.humber.ca/type/degrees.

Business Degree students learn from the bestBy: John Rose, Recruitment Officer

Residence More than just a place to LiveThe decision to live in residence was a no brainer for Humber student Danielle Petit, who hails from Montreal, Quebec. The third year Film and Television Production student knew there was no doubt what her accommodation situation was going to be once coming to Humber. For Danielle, there were several advantages to living in residence. She was coming to an entirely new city and knew no one, so she could see that “…residence would be a good way to meet people and make new friends.”

Danielle chose to attend Humber because of the college’s great reputation and the fact that she was looking for a hands on film program. In addition to that, the three year Film and Television Production program came highly recommend to her by someone in the industry. With the support of her family, she packed her bags, made her way to Toronto and moved into Humber “rez”.

In her first year in residence, Danielle stayed in a dormitory style room, which is a single room that comes fully furnished with centralized washrooms on each floor. This is a great option for students since these rooms provide the privacy and personal space anyone would need, while allowing students to develop and create long lasting friendships and integrate into the Humber community. Included in the residence package is a dining plan, bed, built-in-desk with chair, bookshelves, closet, and bar sized fridge. Students living in residence have access to high speed internet, phone with local service and voicemail and cable access. Each floor also has common areas that include TV lounges, with microwaves and sinks, laundry facilities (pay per load) and community cooking facilities.

In her third year of residence living, Danielle was in one of Humber’s fully furnished “suite-style” rooms with semi-private bathrooms and kitchenettes. This style of residence has two bedrooms per unit, with a 3 piece washroom and kitchenette. Each bedroom has a double bed with drawers below, desk, bookshelves and closet. The kitchenette comes with a full size fridge, sink and microwave. All other amenities available in the dormitory style rooms are included as well, such as cable access, high speed internet and local phone service.

Danielle really enjoyed the social atmosphere of living in residence. She says that since everyone in first year is new to the whole experience, “everyone wants to make a friend; which makes the transition a lot easier because you’re all in the same boat.” Because of this, Danielle has made many friends by living in residence and says that one of the best activities in her first year was Humber’s residence ‘Welcome Week’. Welcome Week gives students a chance to get to know the campus and other students living in residence before classes start. Once moved in, students have the chance to meet with their Resident

Assistant, a senior student designated to each floor, and their neighbours.

An important topic on every students mind is food. The dining plan has something on the menu for every taste and

can accommodate special dietary needs. Humber’s dining plans come in four sizes, designed to fit every appetite size. Dining Plans are convenient, flexible and offer tax benefits

(5%-13% savings on all meal purchases). Humber’s variety of food venues also means students can enjoy everything from a fine dining experience to a quick

snack. Most food places at Humber are open from 7am-10pm. For more information on what plan fits your budget, please visit Humber’s dining budget planner at www.residence.humber.ca/node/34.

Living in Residence gives students more than just a place to sleep. It opens the door to new set of

experiences that allow students to experience all that college life at Humber has to offer. For

more information about residence, please visit www.residence.humber.ca.

Healthy Body = A Healthy MindBy: Nick Farnell, New Media Communications Specialist

When students are healthy they have a much greater chance of meeting their academic goals and fully participating in the campus community. Humber makes every effort to eliminate health related barriers by giving students easy access to numerous health services. In addition to comprehensive health care coverage, there are health clinics and fitness facilities right on campus.

The Health and Dental Plan is provided by the student government – the Humber Students’ Federation (HSF). The plan is specifically designed for students, is easy and straightforward to use and covers what students need the most. “Students really find the health services that we offer useful” says Mike Berg, HSF President. “Students should be concentrating on academics rather than having to worry about how they are going to pay for a prescription.”

One of the most popular services offered under the plan is dental coverage, especially with the opening of a new dental clinic right on campus. In January of 2009 the Dental Hygiene clinic opened at the North Campus making it easy for students to get an appointment between classes. The clinic offers most preventative services, including cleaning, polishing and fluoride treatments, as well desensitizing, sports mouth guards and teeth whitening.

Other widely used services of the plan include vision care (glasses and examinations), prescriptions, and paramedical services like massage therapy. A full list of what is covered can be found at www.hsfweb.com.

In addition to the Dental Hygiene clinic there is a Health Centre on campus offering everything from allergy injections to nutrition counselling. The Health Centre has nurses available on a walk-in basis during the day as well as physicians and nurse practitioners by appointment. If concerns are sports related there are an athletic therapist, sports medicine doctor, and massage therapist in the Athletic Therapy Clinic.

Being physically active is another great way to stay healthy. Fitness facilities at both the North and Lakeshore campuses are free for all full time students. Athletics provides free fitness classes like yoga and kickboxing, runs intramurals sports like hockey and ultimate frisbee, and offers discounted personal training. There are also more than a dozen very successful varsity teams including basketball, soccer, and volleyball. For more information on Athletics at Humber, go to www.athletics.humber.ca.
