It is with sadness that we report that, James Stice, father of gospel pianist and artist Jeff Stice, passed away March 7, 2017. He slipped into the arms of his Savior peacefully in the presence of his family. Jeff commented on his father’s passing, “At 7:00 last evening I held my Dad’s head in my hands and watched him take his last breath...then he went home...I’ve known this day would come, I’ve known he would finally give up this fight, but the Bible says, ‘To be absent from this body is to be in the presence of the Lord.’ My Dad was the greatest man I’ve ever known and he loved me in spite of my many mistakes. I would take NOTHING for the time I’ve spent with him these last three years. He loved me, plain and simple. ‘I’m gonna miss you Daddy, BUT I WILL SEE YOU AGAIN!’ Jimmy Stice was my Daddy and my hero!” Please keep Jeff and the rest of the Stice family in your prayers.

You describe your meeting as a divine appointment.

Holt: We developed such a friendship over the years that we would hang at Starbucks for three hours talking about what we saw out there [in the marketplace] and what we hoped for. We started asking how we could change the business, this tumultuous landscape for artists.

Flack: We say it was a God thing because we couldn’t have orchestrated it ourselves.

Holt: We decided we wanted to keep an open door and an open heart and eventually the timing seemed right.

What are the current challenges you see in the realm of Christian music?

Holt: With the advent of multi-artist events like WinterJam

and Outcry, it puts pressure on the artists. If you’re not on a mega-tour, you have to figure out other strategies to reach your audience. You have to be active online and in streaming sources. That’s how kids find you these days.

You currently manage Lauren Daigle and Blanca [and added Chris McClarney after this interview was conducted]. How do you tailor your plans to

match an artist?

Holt: Blanca’s been at this for ten years. She was formerly with another group (Group1Crew). She’s a mom. She has a son. Her husband travels with her as her road manager. They have a process and a system and a band that they’ve been using for a long time. It’s also helpful that I know all the people at her label (Word). (Continued on page 8)

And then you have Lauren who’s brand new at this but has a label (Centricity) that’s behind her. She came from a different place where we had to build a whole team around her.

Each has her own calling and we know where their hearts are. Kendra and I spend a lot of time with Blanca and Lauren to know who they are and try to represent as best as possible from a heart perspective. It makes things a little simpler when something comes in; it’s pretty quick to know if it’s going to fit in alignment with what her calling is.

Historically, the business end of the Christian music industry was a very male-dominated world. Women who were assertive were sometimes stigmatized. Do you see this dynamic still in play?

Flack: I honestly never struggled in that realm, even when I was on the road working with crews. I never allow the person I’m talking with to focus on being male or female. I want to come in, do my job, do it well and respect people. When I have to be assertive, I always do it in a way that would disarm instead of cause conflict.

As a company, we’ve always come from a perspective of what we thought was really fair, to stay in constant contact and treat people kindly.

Holt: Also, these days there are women working in different capacities all across the music industry.

Lauren Daigle is a very in-demand artist these days. How do you help her manage opportunities that come her way?

Flack: First and foremost, the only way to manage is to rely on the Holy Spirit and his leading. There’s not a path you can follow and you can’t just emulate what another artist has done. We have to rely on the Holy Spirit about which things to take and which ones not to take.

We also have to see how it lines up with her calling, her vision and where she’s going.

What’s key in determining whether you want to work with an artist?

Flack: There has to be heart alignment.

What’s the most satisfying aspect of your work?

Holt: We get to talk about Jesus every single day. We remind ourselves to keep everything in perspective. Sometime Kendra and I look at each other and say, “This is our job?!” It’s just awesome. We’re doing our best on a daily basis to honor God and support our artists and have fun while we’re doing it.

Flack: We don’t look at this like a competition [with other managers and artists]. We just try to create healthy lives for our artists and their families.
