DISCOVERY CENTER TRIATHLON HITS THE MARK 250 tri-athletes and 150 spectators joined us on July 3rd for the annual wilderness triathlon. The event features a 300-yard swim, a rollicking 10K bike ride and a 5K run through the woods. On a pre-race training run, one participant returned breathless after encountering a Black Bear-- a BIG Black Bear. She quickly realized, this truly is a wilderness triathlon. At the race conclusion, contestants and their families enjoyed a party with food, beverages, lots of stories, and a raffle. Aaron Mancheski, of Boulder Junction, won a Kinetics Road Machine Fluid Trainer generously donated by Muddy Paws Racing. Casey Pickerill, of Lafayette, Indiana, won the coveted Tri- Athlete Goodie Basket, compliments of Coontail Sports. Top finishers and complete race results are available www.discoverycenter.net. By Guy David,

The Discovery Center Bird Club contributes volunteer time and talent to various citizen science projects in behalf of the Discovery Center. Projects include participating in the annual International Crane Count, studying the effects of a regional shoreline restoration project on breeding bird populations, and regularly reporting bird species observations to a national bird database.

On April 17, 2010, club members assisted in the International Crane Count. Every year, for one early morning in April, club members scatter throughout the area to count and record Sandhill Cranes.

During the month of June, the club conducted shoreline bird surveys as part of a project that the Discovery Center has been contracted to perform. Volunteers assay birds at 6:00 a.m. every Monday, Wednesday and Friday throughout June. At these outings, a member records the number of each bird species observed and reports the data to eBird, a national database. The club reported 171 species of birds so far in 2010 and a total of 235 species over the past six years. Several club members also enjoy observing birds at Ledge Park near Horicon Marsh, located in north-central Dodge County between Horicon and Mayville. Ledge Park is considered one of the most beautiful places in southeast Wisconsin.

Summer Raffl e tickets can be purchased by calling 715-543-2085. Need not be present to win.

By Hannah Uher-Koch,

This summer, the he North Lakeland Discovery Center is focused on two bird surveys. The fi rst is a Shoreline Restoration Bird Survey in conjunction n with the Department of of Natural Resources. The The second is a joint study study of birds with the Lac du Lac du Flambeau tribe. Both surveys examine birds endemic to our area. Participants will conduct a bird count and species assay. The topic is particularly germane in light of the ecological catastrophe in the Gulf of Mexico. Ecological disasters have widespread effect on endemic and migrating birds. By surveying the current population of birds in the Northwoods, we are better able to assess the impact of ecological disasters on our bird populations. For example, the beloved Common Loon winters in the Gulf of Mexico and summers regionally in Wisconsin. One can only wonder how potentially toxic habitat and food sources could affect our own bird populations. Through monitoring and education, we hope to become better informed about the populations of birds which reside locally. Ultimately we hope to protect the Northwoods through enhanced education and knowledge.

Note from the Director

Sarah Johnson,

I was recently invited to give a presentation to the Philanthropic Education Organization (PEO). PEO is an international association of women sharing a common sisterhood, who raise money in support of women in education. I was invited to introduce the Discovery Center and speak on a topic of my choice.

For this occasion I chose the Timber Wolf, Canis lupus, as my topic. I was a bit nervous despite past experiences speaking to groups about the Discovery Center. Would this sophisticated group of women be interested in the topic?

Once I began, my nerves eased and I found myself looking into intent and curious eyes. These women were steadfastly interested in the wolves’ past, present and future role in our Northwood’s ecosystem. To augment the presentation, I brought wolf pelts and skulls; I left the scat (poop) in the car. It was a luncheon, after all.

All in all, it was a delightful time, with great input, questions, stories, and group feedback; and quite contrary to my long-ago public speaking fears. Characteristically, I waited until my last semester in college to take the dreaded speech class. Now, I am comfortable with public speaking engagements, and particularly enjoy audiences that share a common concern and connection to the Northwoods. Please feel welcome to contact me, [email protected] or 715-543-2085, to speak at your next meeting or event. Sincerely, I look forward to these occasions.
