senior high school. Students will participate in workshops based on social issues facing today’s youth as well as physical activities such as rock climbing, kayaking and archery. Departure time is 7.45am Wednesday, so students need to be at school by 7.30am. Borambola has very strict rules and has stated that no mobile phones, iPods or aerosol cans are permitted. Students have been given a list of what they need to bring , most importantly, joggers as these are worn all the time. If any further information is needed, please feel free to contact me at the school.

RYPEN Last week, four students travelled to Borambola Sport and Recreation Centre for a Rotary Youth Program for Enrichment. They were Olivia Wells, Ruby Barnes, Clay Martin and Ryan Davies. Thank you to our local Rotary Club who subsidised the trip to the tune of $100 per student. This was very much appreciated. Rypen is an intensive program, consisting of workshops, sport and entertainment activities. The students were given the opportunity to learn from achievers in the worlds of business, sport and

entertainment. At the same time, they interacted with their peers from different backgrounds in an informal atmosphere, where questions and debates are encouraged. Thank you to John Breen for organising the excursion and Bruce Barnes and Caroline Martin who drove Livvy, Ruby, Clay and Ryan to and from Griffith to meet the bus. They are pictured above. A report by the students will feature next week.

her mother, Liz Hicks. To date, no results were available due to inclement weather. Good luck, Jodie.

University of Newcastle Summer School Two of our students, Tori Cooper and Chloe Howard are attending a summer school at Newcastle next week. The Girls Choices Summer School is an initiative of the Equity and Diversity Unit and is designed to promote the selection of Maths and Science, and non-traditional careers amongst Year 9 female students. Well done Tori and Chloe.

Premier’s Anzac Scholarship Mary Lou Gardam has again put the spotlight on HWMHS with her success in gaining the Premier’s Anzac Scholarship. She will be going to Gallipoli in September 2011. Well done on being chosen for this scholarship.

Fishing Trip Nineteen students accompanied by Neil Norton and Dan Tripney

travelled to Sorrento (Vic) this week to experience, among other piscatorial activities, a day on Port Phillip Bay on a charter boat. This is a new experience for most of the students and one that cannot be experienced locally.

RLSS Certificate of Appreciation The school was presented with a Royal Life Saving Society Certificate of Appreciation Honour Award this week. This was in recognition of support, dedication and commitment to life saving

education. Congratulations must go to Leonie Booth who is the driving force behind this initiative at HWMHS.

Student Volunteering Award Well done to Ambrose Taylor who will be presented with a Student Volunteering Award. This was sent out by the Premier, Kristina Keneally and recognized the positive effect volunteering has on the community.

P a g e 3 Term 4 Week 8

Year 6 into Year 7 coordinator 2011 Zoe Watson has been appointed the co ordinator of transition for Year 6 into Year 7 in 2011. She will liaise with the primary schools to ensure students from Year 6 are prepared for their entry into High School in 2012. Emily Nelson has been in this role in 2010. She has done a great job in preparing our new students for next year.

Thank you The School Council and P & C must be thanked for their support throughout the year. The Ex-students Association again supported the school with a substantial amount of funding. Thanks again for your legacy to the school and education of students. I appreciate the support given by all staff, particularly Lea Poustie, while Mr Billing was away at inservices this week.

Phil Thompson, Deputy Principal.

Shearing Qualifications gained by Year 11 Students Pictured are Jake Hicks, Steven Spiers and Jack Morrison learning to shear at Tuppal Woolshed Finley. The course was run by Finley TAFE over 2 weeks and the boys can use these competencies towards their Primary Industries course. Congratulations to each one of them. Study and Careers Seminars We have received positive feedback from the senior students about the seminars in which they participated on Tuesday. The presenter was young, humorous, very different in style and most effective. We trust the students took away some very basic but important reminders about study techniques, such as:

Repetition being a key to successful recall Practice HSC questions Use of mindmaps and colour as effective tools and Always remembering to check they have learnt everything in the syllabus.

Simon Parr returns to HWMHS as a fully trained Paramedic During Careers classes yesterday, our Year 12 students were treated to a very interesting session with 2 young professional people, Simon Parr (ex–student 2005) and Patty Thompson (visiting Hay). Simon spoke to the students about his experiences at university, giving them valuable tips and advice for the next few years ahead. Simon has just completed his degree in Paramedics and will be employed in Sydney early in 2011. Patty trained in Marketing and Advertising (University of Canberra) and has worked and travelled overseas in recent years. Patty also had an interesting career story and helpful advice for Year 12. More career success stories for HWMHS Students Bronwyn Hicks and Patrick Miller Bronwyn Hicks (Year 12 2010) recently informed me that she had been offered a governess position east of Alice

Springs on a property. She will look after 2 children with their daily schoolwork and live on the property. This has been a long term plan for Bronwyn and she has shown much initiative in using networks to track down an appropriate place of employment. We congratulate he and wish her every success in this new and career and for having the adventurous spirit to venture into such a different geographical area. Bronwyn also told me that the property is only 150 km out of town - in this part of the world this translates as almost suburban. Patrick Miller (Year 11 2010) has recently left school to take up a full time apprenticeship with Col Tighe Electrical and we have already seen Patrick back at school working ‘on the job’. As apprenticeships in the trades are difficult to obtain at the moment, Patrick has certainly been given a great employment opportunity. We wish him well.
