ILLNESS AND INFECTOUS DISEASES Policy 4.12

Policy statement

We will go above and beyond to be accessible to our children and families and aim to provide a safe & hygienic environment that will promote the health and wellbeing of the children. We will take all reasonable steps to pre-

vent the spread of infectious diseases through the implementation of procedures that are consistent with guidelines of State Health Authorities. All children and adults in the service will be considered as infectious and

these procedures must be consistently applied across all services. Children with infectious diseases will be excluded from the service for the period recommended by the Depart-

ment of Health. Where there is an outbreak of an infectious disease each enrolled child’s parent/emergency contact will be no-tified as soon as practicable under ordinary circumstances. The service will take care when issuing the notifica-

tion to ensure it is not done in a manner that is prejudicial or names any particular child. Parents/guardians are advised upon enrolment and in regular reminders not to bring sick children to the service and to arrange prompt collection of children who are unwell. The care needs of a sick child cannot be met with-

out dramatically reducing the general level of supervision of the other children, or risking other children’s health.

Where a child takes ill at the service all care and consideration will be given to comfort the child and minimise the risk of cross infection until the child is collected by the parent/emergency contact.

Considerations

Procedure Parents will be informed about the illness and infectious diseases policy on enrolment. A Regularly updated copy of the department of health guidelines on infectious diseases from NSW Dept. of Health website http://health.nsw.gov.au/publichealth/Infectious/a-z.asp will be kept for refer-ence by educators and the organisations management and made available to parents on request. A child or adult will be considered sick if he/she: Sleeps at unusual times, is lethargic Has a fever over 38 degree Is crying constantly from discomfort Vomits or has diarrhoea Is in need of constant 1 to 1 care Has an infectious disease If a child is unwell at home parents are not permitted to bring the child to the service. If children appear un-well when being signed in by their parent/guardian their parent/guardian will be asked to take them home. If a child becomes ill or develops symptoms at the service the parents will be contacted to take the child home. The child who is ill will be comforted, cared for and placed in a quiet area with adult supervision until the child’s parent or other authorised adult takes them home. During a fever natural methods will be employed to bring the child’s temperature down until the parents arrive or help is sought. Such methods include: Clothes removed as required, clear fluids given, tepid sponges adminis-tered. If a child’s temperature is very high, and cannot be bought down & parents cannot be contacted, and the situation becomes serious the child will be taken to the doctor or an ambulance called. If a staff member becomes ill or develops symptoms at the service they can return home if able to organise for someone to take them home. The Nominated/Authorised Supervisor will organise a suitable replacement as soon as possible.

10 ways to get active with your kids

1. Walk or cycle to and from school with the kids as often as possible.

2. Build a den or treehouse with them in the school holidays. Or, under supervision, encourage them to climb a tree or two.

3. Go roller skating, rollerblading or skateboarding, indoors or outside. In winter, go ice skating. Kids also love scooters.

4. Do an activity challenge together, such as working towards a fun run or a walk for charity.

5. Take the dog for a walk. If you don't have one of your own, ask to borrow a neighbour's or friend's dog and take it for a walk. Follow the link below for dog friendly parks and beaches.

6. Support your kids in sports, clubs or any other activities that may interest them. Joining a weekend club sport ensures commitment to a team and regular exercise.

7. Find time every weekend to do something active with your children. Play frisbee or football in the park, go trampolining, or try indoor rock climbing.

8. Fly a kite.

9. Try a beach holiday. When they hit the sand, children find a multitude of ways to exercise, including games, swimming, and plenty of running around. Or try an activity-based holiday. 10. The NSW National Parks and Wildlife Service website has lists of events such as guided walks and children's fun days for fresh ideas for active days out.

In ancient Rome, people used decorative wreaths as a sign of victory. Some believe that this is where the hanging of wreaths on doors came from.

The origins of the Advent wreath are found in the folk practices of the pre-Christian Ger-manic peoples who, during the cold December darkness of Eastern Europe, gathered

wreaths of evergreen and lighted fires as signs of hope in a coming spring and renewed light. Christians kept these popular traditions alive, and by the 16th century Catholics and

Protestants throughout Germany used these symbols to celebrate their Advent hope in Christ, the everlasting Light. From Germany the use of the Advent wreath spread to other parts of the Christian world. Traditionally, the wreath is made of four candles in a circle of evergreens with a fifth candle in the middle. Three

candles are violet and the fourth is rose, but four white candles or four violet candles can also be used. Each day

at home, the candles are lighted, perhaps before the evening meal-- one candle the first week, and then anoth-

er each succeeding week until December 25th. A short prayer may accompany the lighting of each candle. The

last candle is the middle candle. The lighting of this candle takes place on Christmas Eve. It represents Jesus Christ

being born.
