Investment Information i What’s happening? Best practice at Farringdon: sustainably designed roof Overview As part of the design process for the improvements to Farringdon station, the new ticket hall will have a ‘brown roof’. Designed to improve the biodiversity of the area, the roof will create a habitat for low invertebrate species and micro-organisms. In turn, this could potentially provide a feeding ground for Black Redstart – a protected species that has been present in the area. The roof will be 1300m2, of which around half will be ‘brown’, the remainder taken up with ventilation equipment for the ticket hall. The roof will also contribute to sustainable urban drainage (SUDS) by providing attenuation of heavy rainfall, and will improve the thermal insulation performance of the building, reducing heating costs. Benefits • Meets local authority planning policy and helped gain planning approval • Meets programme objectives related to the environment • Contributes to improved biodiversity within the area • Contributes to Sustainable Urban Drainage targets • Provides improved thermal insulation for the ticket hall – reducing energy consumption and costs Meeting our objectives As part of the Thameslink programme, the Farringdon project have been set a range of targets and objectives. These help us measure our achievements and demonstrate that we are implementing industry best practice in areas such as sustainability. Our work on the brown roof meets our commitments in the following areas: • Farringdon sustainability strategy; natural resource protection and environmental management • Sustainability targets; protect and enhance biodiversity • CEEQUAL; Ecology and biodiversity Artist's impression of new ticket hall For more information, please contact Rachael Riley, Consents Manager; [email protected] Untitled - Page: 1 Untitled - Page: 1 2010-07-21 10:06:46 +0100 2010-07-21 10:06:46 +0100

What’s happening?Best practice at Farringdon: sustainably designed roof

OverviewAs part of the design process for the improvements to Farringdon station, the new ticket hall will have a ‘brown roof’.

Benefits• Meets local authority planning policy and helped gain planning approval• Meets programme objectives related to the environment• Contributes to improved biodiversity within the area• Contributes to Sustainable Urban Drainage targets• Provides improved thermal insulation for the ticket hall – reducing energy consumption and costs

Meeting our objectivesAs part of the Thameslink programme, the Farringdon project have been set a range of targets and objectives. These help us measure our achievements and demonstrate that we are implementing industry best practice in areas such as sustainability.

Our work on the brown roof meets our commitments in the following areas:• Farringdon sustainability strategy; natural resource protection and environmental management• Sustainability targets; protect and enhance biodiversity• CEEQUAL; Ecology and biodiversity
