ILS RECEIVES ACCREDITATION!
This past week was a most important week here at Immanuel. From Sunday through Tuesday, we completed our NLSA (National Lutheran Schools Accreditation) accreditation review. Over the last 8 months, staff and volunteer leaders of Immanu-el completed a thorough self-study of the pro-grams and practices of ILS. This 91 page docu-ment was then reviewed and confirmed by the visiting team. The visiting team comprised of Lu-theran school leaders from New England as well as the Director and Associate Director of School Ministry for the LCMS.
NLSA accredits over 700 schools in the USA as well as China and Vietnam. This process is com-pleted every 5 years and consists of an evaluation of numerous areas including our facilities, staff, relationships, teaching and learning. During their visit, the team completed 57 interviews and sat in on 26 class lessons.
We are pleased to announce that Immanuel Lu-theran School was recommended for accredita-tion! Director of School Ministry, Terry Schmidt, said, “Immanuel Lutheran School serves its stu-dents well.” Principals Gary Dresser and Jim Krupski commended Nate Palkewick as a great leader and said that we are blessed to have Kim Merrill here serving as PR Director. Job Posting: We are currently in search of a Hot Lunch Coordinator for the 2014-2015 school year.
All applicants are required to be state certified (ServSafe Cert.), or willing to go through the
ServSafe Certification. Hours are Monday through Friday, 9:30am to 12:30pm on days when
school is in session. Our current Hot Lunch Coordinator, Miss Sue, will be retiring at the end
of this school year. She will hold a training session the first week of June to familiarize the
new coordinator with the program.

Join us for Summer Camp at Camp SAILS!
June 23rd—August 1st Camp SAILS is one of the only Christian Summer Camps in the area. We offer a summer filled with fun, new friends, and learning in a safe, supportive and nurturing Christian environment. SAILS offers a variety of courses for children ages 3 (Pre-K) through 8th grade.
Camp SAILS will run in two sessions each week. The morning session will take place from 9:00am until 11:30am. There will be a lunch and recess break from 11:30am to 12:30pm for any campers staying for the full day. The afternoon session will run from 12:30pm to 3:00pm. Vacation Bible School will take place during the week of July 7th-11th from 9:00am until 12:00pm. We also offer an extended care morning and afternoon program that is available at a separate rate.

The school year is starting to wind down, but there are still things going in the PTL.
Here are some opportunities to help out the PTL:
� Stay tuned for information regarding our final “Family Night Out” of the school
year. It’s sure to be a tasty treat!
� At our last monthly PTL meeting, elections were held for President and Treasurer, as
their 2-year term is up. There were no nominations for President – so the position is cur-
rently vacant. Dori McManus was re-elected as Treasurer and will serve through June of
2016. The PTL would like to thank outgoing President, Erik Tonner, for his great in-
volvement and leadership over the past two years. He will be greatly missed!
� Volunteers are needed to help run events at the Pre K Field Day on May 30th here at ILS
(K-8 Field Day is being held off site). Marianne Gannon is coordinating and will tell you
exactly what is needed. Come and help our littlest friends have a great, fun filled day!
� The PTL is putting on an Honor Roll breakfast for our scholars and their families. There
are still slots available to help. Check your email for the link to the online sign up. Dina
Bacher is coordinating, so come on out and help!

Notes from the Principal � Thank you again for all the help and support as we worked through the accredi-
tation process over this school year.
� Voters of Immanuel Lutheran Church recently passed the budget for 2014-15.
This budget included the hiring of a new full time teacher. This allows for our
3rd and 4th grades to be stand alone classes.
� Please check your email for an update on the process for the Family Life Cen-
ter/gymnasium. Construction is expected to begin this Fall.
� Please join us on Sunday, June 1 at the 10:45am worship service as we hold
graduation ceremonies for our 8th grade graduate, Liam Walker.

For ILS students and their families:
�You can borrow books from your local library
�A librarian can help you find fiction books, biographies, and non-fiction
books to read.
�You can use an electronic device (like a Kindle), if you have one.
�You can go to summer programs at your local library.
�Read out loud to:

your grandmother or grandfather (they are usually very good listeners),
your friends,
your cat or dog, or even your goldfish!
�Take turns reading with the people above—one or two pages at a time.
The cat, the dog or the goldfish will not cooperate with this.

A few months ago, Ms. Schneider asked many of the ILS alumni to answer various ques�ons about when
they went to school. The fi"h and sixth graders came up with a list of ques�ons that they were curious
about. We broke into groups and read the various le&ers and responses. From there, we created a Venn
diagram that showed similari�es and differences from then to now. Some of the le&ers were from alumni
da�ng as far back as 1938. It was quite eye opening for us especially about punishments. I asked all of the
students to write an essay about it. Please check out our
bulle�n board with the essays. Below is what each student found the most interes�ng.
Jack - They were able to play dodgeball then.
Manny - They had a big gym.
David - The classrooms were much bigger than ours.
Yameng - They had less teachers than we do now.
Alex - They had to take an actual handwri�ng class back then.
Shyam - They had bomb drills, but didn't have lock down drills like we do.
Kathleen - Some of the classes had three grades in them with thirty or more students in them.
Joseph - It was different that if you misbehaved, you were spanked with a ruler or a paddle.
Emma - It was strange that they didn't have a playground.
Sasha - Their punishments were different with being hit by a paddle or being put into the corner.
Jolene - They sang opere&as in their school.
A special thanks to all of the alumni who responded to the ques�onnaires. We really enjoyed
learning about the history of ILS. One thing that
we really learned through this assignment was that
ILS has been a great place to be for many years!

spoke very highly of our teachers, saying that they are a strength at ILS as they work as a team and have a great understanding of the needs of our students.
The visiting team will present us with their final findings within the next week, but they shared a number of commendations with us, including:

• Public Relations Director
• Positive school climate
• Joy-filled and engaged student body
Thank you to the entire Immanuel community for your support and prayers over the last year. We look forward to building upon our strengths and addressing our areas of growth. This has been an extraordinary experience and provided us with great insight. It has truly shown that Im-manuel Lutheran School is a great place. The senior member of the visiting team Vern Koch summed it up best as he exclaimed, “The Spirit is alive and well at Immanuel Lutheran School!”
