IBM and EKZ, a Swiss utility provider, are piloting a web app that will allow consumers to conveniently charge electric vehicles and monitor their energy costs .

Whether at home, in the office or thousands of miles away, electric-vehicle owners can consult their mobile device to check whether their car’s battery level is sufficient for its next use .

The app also features smart charging options. For example, to start the charging when rates are lowest, when a trip is planned, or when renewable energy is available.

Smart grid and sustainable energies

In 2009, EDISON was launched to demonstrate a smart grid for the large-scale adoption of electric vehicles powered by wind energy on the Danish island of Bornholm.

From EDISON to EcoGrid EU – a smart grid demonstrator

Now EDISON will be expanded on Bornholm under the name EcoGrid EU.

EcoGrid EU aims beyond electric vehicles to automate select appliances in homes and offices , such as heat pumps and electric water heaters, based on the electricity price.

In March 2011, IBM’s Deep Q&A system called Watson beat two trivia champions on America’s favorite quiz show JEOPARDY!

Watson has the potential

� to establish evidence profiles from disparate data (e.g. latest knowledge in medical literature, reference material, prior cases, tests and findings, individual medical data of patient and symptoms).

Watson’s Deep Q&A system proposes a differential diagnosis to help personalize medical treatment
