What’s new at Camco?... April 2015
“Welcome to the first edition of our newsletter for 2015. It is hard to
believe the first quarter of the year is behind us and we are
heading towards winter and the end of the financial year. We
have had several “forced” personnel changes (as you can see
below!) which has provided some unique challenges. As is often
the case, a change can always be an opportunity for
improvement and we certainly are taking that approach in this
instance. We have appointed a new role – Business Manager – which will create a
broader overview of all aspects of the administration side of the company’s
activities. Additionally, we are preparing to launch a major “branding” strategy
which is extremely exciting. I look forward to seeing all of you as we roll this out over
the next few months…. Chris Goold, Director
In-house news… We would like to welcome the newest member to the Camco family, Lucia Alfano
as our new Business Manager. Lucia brings with her over 8 years of Financial
Management experience working in the construction industry, with a strong focus
on leadership, communication and organisation skills. Lucia’s knowledge and
experience with the new project management software soon to be implemented
into Camco’s working systems, will be a valuable tool in the integration process.
Congratulations to our Human Resources &
Administration Manager, Lilly Siciliano and
her husband David, on the safe arrival of
their little bundle of joy — ‘Sofia Rose’. And
the good news doesn’t stop there…
Congratulations to our Finance Manager
Liz Seychell and her husband Simon who
are expecting their second child in June 2015. And last but not least, best wishes to
our Project Engineer, Sam Piotrowski who is set to wed Alanna this month.
Camco is also pleased to advise they are now a Supportive Employer for
Defence Reserves Support. Australia’s Defence Reserves are an essential
component of the Navy, Army and Air Force. The Reservists, such as our own
Shaun Nicholson, make a vital contribution to the defence and security of Australia,
and to Australia’s contribution to the global community as a good world citizen.
Camco Management System
I am pleased to report that there have been no significant work related injuries since
the last review and reporting of risks and incidents continues to improve. This is
positive news for all Camco personnel and I extend my thanks to all for your
commitment to safety and to the risk identification and reporting process.
As previously identified and reported, incidents involving property damage rated
highly in the 2013/14 reporting period. While we still have one quarter left in the
current year, it is encouraging to note that incidents of this nature have significantly
decreased as at the same time last year. A full analysis of incident data will be
included in the next newsletter.
Also, Camco continues its pre-qualification with various organisations as previously
reported. A number of these are due for review in the next few months and an
update on their status will be provided in future newsletters.
Marco Puz, System Manager
What’s news?... Water Sensitive Urban Design Camco SA Pty Ltd have successfully completed road reconstructions, roundabout
rejuvenations, traffic calming devices and more recently water sensitive urban design
projects ranging in value from $20,000 up to in excess of $3M. The scope of these projects
has included granular pavement construction, deep lift asphalt, kerb removal and
replacement and drainage pod construction. We have also successfully adapted these
skills to hard play upgrades and tennis court construction.
Brooker Terrace, Hilton Drainage & Reconstruction Stages 1 & 2, City of West Torrens
The first stage of this project included the reconstruction of 6000m2 of existing roadway,
construction of 12 new drainage pods and associated stormwater. The second and final
stage of the Brooker Terrace drainage and reconstruction project incorporates a further
800m of road upgrade. The project scope includes demolition of the existing bitumen
pavement and kerbing, construction of new kerbing, deep lift asphalt pavement and
associated drainage works.
Rankine Road Reconstruction & Drainage Upgrade, City of West Torrens
This project involved installation of approximately 375m of new concrete stormwater drains
up to 450mm diameter. Feeding the new drains there are a series of Bio-filtration Pods,
which capture the runoff via the kerb drains. The flow is “cleaned” via numerous layers of
filtration material before returning to the stormwater system through the underground pipe
network. The second part of the project involved the complete reconstruction of approx.
800m2 of pavement. The existing pavement was excavated and removed from site, and
new pavement constructed to suit the design levels. The crown of the road was shifted to
maximise the drainage of the road, in a very flat location. New kerbing was also construct-
ed. At all times driveway access was provided to local residents, with normal vehicle traffic
diverted around the worksite using localised detour routes.
Druids Avenue Intersection Upgrade, Mount Barker, District Council of Mount Barker
The intersection of Druids Avenue and Cameron Road is a major thoroughfare for vehicles
frequenting the Mount Barker Caravan Park, Cornerstone College and Dunn Oval. It also serves as the transport route for large commercial vehicles within the trading precinct with an estimated 6000 vehicles travelling through the intersection per day. The project required the existing pavement to be excavated, reconstructed with deeplift pavement and construction of a new round-about annulus all whist maintaining access for the traffic
movements described above. By careful planning and negotiation with Council on Traffic Management Plans, night works, and some design modifications, the project was constructed with minimal impacts.
North Road, Nairne Traffic Management Scheme, District Council of Mount Barker
Construction of 4 traffic management devices designed to improve the flow of traffic along the entire length of North road,
Nairne. North Road is a busy local road running between Woodside Road and Bridge Street at Nairne. The existing road-way is quite narrow, has a daily traffic volume of around 900 vpd, and is also a Southlink bus route. The works were split into
four sites, involving two pavement reconstructions at major intersections and two raised paved driveway links to slow
vehicles down. The works had to be undertaken in such a manner as to not disrupt the bus movements; this lead to afterhours works and careful planning of bypass tracks. Excava-
tion via pavement profiling was employed to quicken the construction period, which minimised the disruption to local traffic movements.
St Peter’s College Wombat Crossings, St Peters College
This project is a road safety upgrade including the construction of 3 new wombat crossings (concrete, bitumen and linemarking) together with new lighting and the conversion of a hard play area into a staff carpark freeing up parking for the
congested junior school carpark. The works also included the modification of the Hackney Road carpark including road widening, pram ramps, installation of new kerbing and linemarking to facilitate the
calming of traffic to allow for safe school bus access.
