Welcome Our New Neighbors

Why Security Begins at HomeBy Ed Leahy Chairman, SSV Security Committee.

It is elementary. The Mesa Police can’t sit in front of each of our homes 24 hours a day to prevent break-ins. So the surest way to safe guard your property is to not leave it vulnerable. Whenever you are not in your garage, do not leave it unattended with the garage door open -- day or night -- or even slightly raised at any time. Some people think slightly raised doors will allow the garage to be cooler—but heat rises so whatever hot air is in your garage will rise to the ceiling and stay there.

Next, do not leave your car outside with valuables on the front seat even if the doors are locked—and never leave keys in the ignition at any time, even if it is in the garage with the door down. Have a bicycle? Don’t leave it outdoors unsecured, and if possible, don’t leave a golf cart outdoors. The golf cart may not be stolen, but the batteries can disappear. If you don’t have security doors, you are leaving yourself vulnerable for doors being kicked in.

Now enough SSV’ers practice these principles, so we are designated by the Mesa Police as a low crime area, but we are not perfect. The Mesa Police believe that 40 to 50% of the crime that does happen could be prevented by common sense measures.

In a recent e-mail Mesa Police Crime Prevention Officer Karen Stegenga said it well—“Low crime doesn’t mean no crime” — and your vigilance helps keep the little that does happen here to be less and less frequent. If we reduced that rate to zero, it would not mean we could stop being vigilant. It would simply mean that what we are doing is working.

Happy Summer to one and all! I hope each of you are enjoying your summer so far. We have had some good rain, and hope-fully the monsoons will not be too terrible this season. Please be mindful during these storms and stay safe.

I wanted to remind you that through the summer the Architectural Committee still meets twice per month to consider any requests and modifications that you want to make to your home. Before you can begin any kind of project, you must get approval from this committee before the work can commence. The forms are available on our website at www.ssvhoa.com, and are also available in the Activities Office. Our office currently closes at noon, but I am here each day and am available if you need me. Please e-mail or call the office and I will respond as quickly as possible.

The SSV maintenance staff works very hard to accommodate all requests for temperature settings in our buildings. Most of our thermostats are programmable, and they are able to set them for specific gather-ings that happen consistently each week. However, we are experiencing an issue with tampering of the thermostats. Please do not attempt to reset them. If you need assistance in adjusting the temperature, please let the office know. We will do our very best to help you.

Our office will be closed on Friday, July 3, in observance of Independence Day. If you have a maintenance emergency, please call the FirstService Residential customer service number at 480-551-4300. They will direct your call to the appropri-ate person.

Have a safe and happy 4th of July!

Clete & Effie Leatherman By Effie Leatherman

Clete and Effie were born in Chanute, Kansas, and attended school there. In the summer of 1944, Clete told his mother he would like to date a brown haired, brown eyed girl with whom he had attended school. She said, “What’s the matter? Are you too chicken to ask her?” That did it. He asked Effie Anderson if she would go to the movies with him

and that was the start of their relationship. By January, when he left for the Army, they were talking of marriage. On furlough in June of 1945, they were married in the parsonage of the Methodist church. Clete’s cousin, her husband, and their mothers were with them.

When they arrived at the courthouse to secure a license, they found Clete needed his dad’s written con-sent. Driving 18 miles to secure his signature, they had a flat tire. He said he never changed a tire so quickly.

After his time in Japan, Clete returned home. He worked for the Santa Fe Railroad, then the Oil Field Research Lab for six years. He became allergic to the chemicals, so they moved to California, and he began working for Southern Pacific Railroad. In a few months, he transferred to Sparks, Nevada.

Children Kathryn arrived in 1950 and Steve in 1953.Effie worked for an insurance agency. She attended insurance courses at 40 and taught several insur-

ance courses through University of Nevada - Reno.In 1981, Clete and Effie moved to Fernley, Nevada, to an acreage 40 miles east of Reno. The family

enjoyed their visits to the “farm.” In 1999, they retired to SSV.They have four grandchildren, an adopted granddaughter died in 2008, two step-grandchildren, three

great granddaughters and several who have adopted them as grandparents. Effie likes to say that she and Clete made an agreement when they married. He was to make all

the BIG decisions and she all the small ones, and to date, they have never had to make a big decision!

6 July 2015 Sunland Springs Village Voice

ActivitiesChapel Tidings

By Springs Chapel BoardSprings Chapel offers Sunland Springs Village residents, as well as others from the broader community, a

Christian community worship service each Sunday at 9:00 AM, followed by a coffee and fellowship hour. Worship services continue throughout the summer months. During the months of June through September the services will be held in the San Tan Community Center rather than the Auditorium. Springs Chapel is a non-denominational ministry whose mission is to proclaim the gospel of Christ in worship, fellowship, witness, and outreach. Communion is offered the first Sunday of each month. Pastor Anthony Bryant and Pastor Lanny Barringer serve as its pastors.

There will be a one-hour Singspiration the first Sunday evening of July and August beginning at 7 PM. Anyone who enjoys singing the old hymns of the church is welcome to attend. Those attending will be able to choose songs they would like for the group to sing.

“1 Sing to the LORD a new song; sing to the LORD, all the earth. 2 Sing to the LORD, praise his name; pro-claim his salvation day after day. 3 Declare his glory among the nations, his marvelous deeds among all peoples.” Psalm 96:1-3

SSV HOA Meeting SUNLAND SPRINGS VILLAGE HOMEOWNERS ASSOCIATIONMinutes of the Meeting - Superstition Room May 26, 2015The meeting was called to order by HOA Manager Buffy Lewis at 9:32 AM. Ms. Lewis proceeded to review the financial summary of April 30, 2015, which had been distrib-

uted to the audience. She noted $11,050 Transfer Fees from the resale of homes and $9,750 in Working Capital were transferred to the Reserve Account, which has a total value of $1,272,221. We are on budget. The updates to the Auditorium have begun. No monies will be taken from the Operating Fund for this upgrade. New flowers have been planted at the main entrances at Springwood, Guadalupe and Signal Butte. Shrubs are being trimmed to encourage new growth.

The upgrades to the Auditorium will include a new sound system and the Board of Directors also ap-proved a lighting system, which the Auditorium has never had. The funding of $114,000 for this project is coming from the VEF, CDF, and Reserves. When all is said and done, there will be $80,000 from the Activities Fund to go into the VEF and CDF for future project. None of the dollars required will be from HOA funds.

UPDATE ON SALES: Mr. Decker, Vice President of the Board of Directors of the HOA and Farnsworth Homes, reported that so far in May there have been 16 sales. Overall 2,375 homes have been sold in the whole community, 2,294 closed. A number of houses have been sold but not started. Golf III has 16 units unsold; the Town Homes 41. After twenty more sales, they will be in position to manage their own HOA. There will be 2,600 to 3,000 when the Village is at build out. He congratulated the residents on the good job they have done telling all their friends and relative about Sunland Springs.

Mr. Decker continued his report stating that Phase 8 has 137 lots, of which 49 are sold and nine have reservations. In Phase 7, there are 104 lots to sell in inventory. Phase 9 will go all the way to Meridian and then south to the power lines. They have not decided what they will build on the land south of the ball park.

The golf course is up for sale to the residents if they want it. There is a Golf Course Acquisition Committee studying the matter closely with Farnsworth.

Farnsworth does not track the resale home values, but he said the resale price of senior living goes up first in the market place.

With regard to the walking trail south of the wall in Phase 8, trees and bushes have been planted but no granite laid. The gate access to the park area planned by Mesa is still three or four years from starting. There are barbed wire fences along this corridor.

The Assisted Living Building at The Summit will start in June. He had no firm date for the start of Fry’s at Signal Butte and Guadalupe, but it should be some

time by the end of the year. There being no further business to come before the Association, the meeting was adjourned at 9:54 AM.Respectfully submitted, Jane E. Harrel - Recording Secretary

Community Bible StudyBy: Ardella Burtman

The community Bible study will continue to meet during the summer months, including July 3. The Bible study is held every Friday morning at 9 AM in the Springs Card Room. The study is open to anyone who wishes to attend and is not restricted solely to residents of Sunland Springs Village. Not everyone can attend all sessions, but you are invited to attend as many as you can.

This is an interdenominational study, open to men and women. There is no charge and no book to buy – the Bible is the study guide with use of commentaries by trusted Christian writers. Bring any translation of the Bible you prefer to use.

The topic of the current study is “an introductory look at the plan of God with an emphasis on prophecy.” The teacher for this study is George Stratman.

If you have any questions about the Bible study, please call Ardella Burtman at 480.993.3102.“Be still for a while and praise God for His favor, His grace and His awesomeness. God is able

to do the impossible and is always near. He loves us unconditionally.” Esther 4:13

Writers ClubBy: Nan Miller

If you are a rounder and want to check out a new activ-ity, Writers Club meets throughout the year on the first and third Thursdays of each month from 10:00 AM to noon in the Summit Card Room. Our dates for July are the 2nd and 16th. New people are always welcome.

It does not matter if you are a beginner or a published writer or whether you like to compose fiction or nonfiction. In all cases, you will find this a very friendly group, who enjoy writing and also meeting people with the same interest.

We decide at the meeting before on a brief exercise to com-pose between sessions; then we share our words. Those who prefer to bring a piece on which they are working are welcome to do so. Others just come to listen. Our critiques are gentle but instructive. If anyone wants a critique, it is up to them to bring copies of their work so they can receive written comments of others. Although we have more than 20 members, but in the summer we have between six and eight people at a meeting.

This summer, Effie Leatherman, one of the group’s origi-nal members, will lead the club. She can be reached at (480) 986-3196. If you would like to learn what the next assignment is or have questions about the group, call her. Nan Miller, our coordinator, will return in October.

By: Burt Marcus, [email protected] Acquisition Committee is very excited about the

progress we have accomplished thus far, for the purchase of the Sunland Springs Golf Course. As things go forward, all the updates will be given to the "priority list" of homeowners and then posted on the SSV HOA webpage.

To catch up with the current updates and be informed in a timely manner, be sure to put your name on this "priority list." To keep up with the latest news, go to the ssvhoa.com/Acquisition Committee webpage.

Our summer sessions continue with great attendance. The Windows 10 demonstration by John Risan was extremely well attended and received. When it is released, a free upgrade to Win-dows 10 is available to all Windows 7 and 8 users. You can reserve your free upgrade by going to Microsoft.com. Once the upgrade is downloaded, you have up to one year to install it on your computer.

We begin each session during the summer with a short tuto-rial from pcclassesonline.com. This site offers a variety of free on-line tutorials on both Mac and PC based products. Tutorials on other gadgets such as Smart Phones and Tablets are also available. Following the presentation, help is offered on a range of topics, including Microsoft Word, email systems, Windows 7 and 8, Android tablets and Phones and the entire line of Apple products.

Beat the heat and join us on the first and third Wednes-days for the rest of the summer. During the summer season we meet at 10:00 AM in the Superstition Room. We do not collect dues in the summer and everyone is welcome. Our regular meetings in the San Tan facility will commence the first Wednesday in October.

Stay safe and cool during the summer season.
