What You Should Know

About AWS

Looking to

deploy Amazon Web

Services in your

company?

Are you just a cloud computing

enthusiast who wants to know

more about the platform that

serves millions of customers and is

one of the biggest cloud

backbones existing in the world

today.

Amazon Web Services provide online services for other web

sites or client-side applications

‘Scalable and Elastic’ are the two traits that the popularity of

cloud services ride on. With the aim of building a reliable,

distributed and transactional IT infrastructure, Amazon

launched Amazon Web Services.

Some facts and guidelines that everyone related to or working in the

domain of cloud computing should know.

Recognition

Physical location

While Amazon has a quintessential presence in the e-commerce

space online, it is rather difficult to imagine the scale at which

the AWS functions in terms of hardware.

The AWS is located in 8 locations including US, Europe, Asia,

Brazil and Australia. Each zone has distinct data centres

providing AW services.

It is a discreet and decentralized IT infrastructure that exists all

around the world and serves two purposes – coverage and ease

of access.

Services Available

AWS provide an array of different services that vary in flexibility

and ease of deployment.

These also differ in their purpose and hardware/software skills

needed to develop apps.

This helps the clients to adapt faster and deploy quicker.

AWS include a lot of services that map across different possible

functions or features a client might want to deploy in its

application implementation.

They are listed under the genres of computing they fall under.

Raw Computing

Amazon Elastic Compute Cloud (or better known as EC2).

It is at the heart of Amazon Web Services; it allows users to buy

virtual compute servers to run their applications.

Users working on this service boot an Amazon Machine Image

to create a virtual machine.

It is like a normal terminal, but everything that goes on, goes on

in the cloud.

EMR (Elastic Map Reduce) handles Big Data effectively. It uses a

hosted “Hadoop” framework on the AMI.

Networking

Amazon Route 53 and Amazon Virtual Private Cloud (VPC) are

the two networking branches of AWS.

While the former handles DNS based server leasing and

associated services like cPanel integration, the latter can establish

a VPN connection (secure connection) between EC2 servers and

any other network.

It is implemented when a secure connection is to be established

for privileged access or encryption while real-time deployment of

AWS services.

Content Delivery

Amazon is known as one of the first content delivery services to

exist with a cloud backbone.

The simple storage service (S3) provides web based storage for

AWS clients.

A low cost alternative to the S3 is the Amazon Glacier, which can

be used for long term storage.

There are others that vary with space and security degree of the

data being stored.

While Amazon takes care of the data its clients store on its

servers, it is prudent to have some security layers of your own

while deploying system applications on the AWS cloud servers

like privileged access and encryption.

Amazon Database

Services

Probably the most important part of the application

implementation for organizations is a reliable storage and

database management services.

AWS have it integrated in its environment. DynamoDB is a low

cost NoSQL database for professional applications.

Amazon RDS is also another option that includes MySQL and

Informix.

There are a lot of other options which comply to different

development requirements.

One should go through the AWS manual before choosing

one.

Brand Establishment

and Recognition

AWS is one of the most reputed cloud platforms available

today so it is natural that your applications is likely to have

some credibility if it is built on the AWS platform.

It is still up to the developer to ensure security and robustness

for the entire implementation.

AWS has partnerships with other experts in the cloud domain

like SAP so it is likely that if you outsource your development, it

is likely to exist on the AWS.

The flexibility of AWS allows you to keep the programming

models, languages, and operating systems that you are already

using or choose others that are better suited for the project.

AWS is a good option for people desiring flexibility and ease

of development with a creditable brand image of the cloud

platform. Care should still be taken to ensure a robust design

implementation. Refer to our blog post about the measures

and pointers to keep in mind and to aggressively deploy

while developing on the AWS.
