WHAT IS A HOMESTAY TRIP?

What to expect from a Homestay trip in Scotland

If you’re looking for a trip that’s not too far from home then Scotland could be the place for you.

On arrival in Edinburgh you will be looked after by the Scottish Association of Young Farmers' Clubs, before heading off on your travels across Scotland – staying with host families along the way. Scotland’s rich and diverse culture can give delegates a real insight to rural and agricultural life in the country as they will be staying with rural families throughout their stay. Delegates should expect to move hosting areas once a week however they might move twice or three times within the area meaning they may only stay with hosting families for 2 or 3 nights each. Hosts will be Scottish Young Farmers’ members and their families, normally in a rural and agricultural setting, so a keen interest in either has been seen as a benefit in past years.

Arrive in Edinburgh for the orientation meeting; this is a chance to meet the other delegates’ form all over the world. Delegates will spend the first few nights in a youth hostel in Edinburgh, then travel to host families before the royal highland show, where the exchangees will again be staying the youth hostel in Edinburgh’s city centre. Your trip finishes with the Royal Highland Show, a chance to renew friendships and enjoy more Scottish Hospitality. This is likely to be a very hectic two weeks, with a good mixture of farms, sightseeing and social life. Why not take the plunge and apply for a short trip and see what Scotland has to offer.

Tell me more.... If you are passionate about farming and want to experience the Andean climate and the unique cultural history of the Incan empire alongside other Young Farmers then a trip to Peru might be perfect for you. Located high in the Andes Mountains of Peru, Cusco is a beautiful city rich in culture and history. Once the former centre for the Incan Empire, the areas around the Sacred Valley are now arguably the archaeological capital of South America with a culture whose traditions date back over 700 years. At an elevation of 3,400m above sea level, Cusco also has a subtropical highland climate that boasts unique ecosystems and a huge variety of crops, including nearly 4000 potato types when including the rest of the country! There are three parts to this trip with the opportunity to volunteer in various locations in and around Cusco. The first week will be spent in the city itself, helping out at a few different day care and community centres, working with children and improving a site for the people that use it. After a weekend exploring Machu Picchu and the famous Incan sites nearby, you’ll then get your own chance to experience what it’s like to be an archaeologist, working on various sites and learning more about this fascinating culture. This will also be a great opportunity to live and work with other Young Farmers from around the UK, as well as learning all about the culture and various traditions in Peru. Even if you don’t speak any Spanish before you go, you will find yourself coming back speaking some of the language. The first week will involve working with the children to improve their education and provide them with creative and engaging activities from which to learn and have fun. The other main activity will involve working with the community on a project to revitalise the area, such as redecorating a community centre, improving a children’s play area or setting up a vegetable garden in a school. A trip to Cusco wouldn’t be complete without a visit to the world-renowned archaeological site of Machu Picchu. This UNESCO World Heritage Site is home to arguably one of the most beautiful and awe-inspiring ancient cities on the planet, drawing tourists in from all corners of the world to marvel at its fascinating architecture and unique location. The rest of the weekend will also include a visit to the nearby hot springs of Aguas Calientes and the famous Incan terraces of Ollantaytambo.

Page 9: What will your discovery be?

9

The second week will then see the group working alongside professional archaeologists on various dig sites surrounding Cusco. This work is important in not only understanding the former civilisation that called the Sacred Valley their home, but also for preserving these areas so that future visitors can learn and understand more as well. You’ll be trained on various different archaeological techniques and methods, as well as being shown how to understand the use and importance of varying artefacts that are found on these sites. At the end of the trip there will be time to explore the city of Cusco, whether it is to visit the various museums or just to do a bit of shopping and relaxing. There may also be opportunities in the evenings to learn local dances, sample the local wine and try some of the amazing food. Travelling on a Team Travel programme will allow you to explore Peru in a different way to what you could imagine. Truly, a trip of a lifetime.

Tell me more.... If you are passionate about farming and are looking to take your skills overseas to gain a new perspective and to help others, perhaps Vietnam might be the option for you! Located along the western side of the South China Sea, Vietnam is historic and culturally rich country in South East Asia. With karst limestone islands sticking out of the sea, cities flooded with motorbikes, reminders of the war everywhere you go and traditional rice-farming communities further inland, this country offers beautiful landscapes and incredibly friendly, welcoming people. There are three parts to this trip with the opportunity to live and volunteer in Vietnam’s capital city, Hanoi in the first week, followed by a second week being spent further inland in a traditional village, helping out in rice paddies and assisting the farmers with their various traditional farming methods. The weekend in the middle will be spent on an unforgettable trip to see the beautiful Ha Long Bay. The first week will see the group working in a rural part the city, developing a vegetable and fruit garden at a local school as well as doing some education activities as well as spending a cultural day within the city itself. When you are putting this together, you’ll be working with the local children in order to teach them the importance of your work and how they can maintain it once you leave. Even Within a city like Hanoi, it’s incredibly important for people to know how to grow their own food and how to eat healthily and sustainably. It will give you a good opportunity to meet the locals and learn more about the modern culture within the city.

Page 10: What will your discovery be?

10

At the end of the first week, you’ll have the weekend to relax and explore more of the country. No trip to Vietnam would be complete without a visit to the beautiful Ha Long Bay to witness the beautiful and almost other-worldly karst limestone islands. Rising hundreds of feet vertically out of the flat sea and topped by trees and lush vegetation, these islands in the sky hide unique floating villages and photo opportunities around every corner. While you’re here, you’ll have the opportunity to go on a boat ride around the bay, visiting the various floating villages and trying some of the local seafood delicacies. In the second week you will be taken into rural Vietnam to the traditional farming village of Mai Chau. This idyllic Vietnamese village is surrounded by flat rice paddies and towering hills, creating a beautiful and unforgettable landscape. While you’re here, you’ll be working alongside local farmers to understand how they still use traditional methods to harvest the rice and their various other crops. You’ll also help the farmers by helping to sell the vegetables to nearby houses. On top of this, you’ll also learn traditional craft skills and embroidery from the local families to see how else they can bring in some income. Travelling on a Team Travel programme with fellow young farmers from around the UK will allow you to explore Vietnam in a different way than you could imagine. You will see how agriculture works in this part of Asia, as well as experiencing the culture from the eyes of those that live and work there.

Volunteer in Ghana with Projects Abroad

Age to participate: 18-30

Places available: 10

When: 1st – 15th August 2020 (flights are likely to be organised for a 31st July departure)

Duration: 2 weeks

Cost to member: This trip costs £1545 per person (which includes food, accommodation, insurance and excursions). There are also costs to members for travel, vaccinations and social expenditure, plus £30 refundable multimedia presentation deposit

reminders of its colonial past in the south, and lush, green rainforests dominating the hills further inland, this country provides a unique and friendly African experience. The group will work at a small farm in the Akuapem Hills, an hour north of Accra, helping develop sustainable farming methods and encourage organic farming. Produce which is grown in the farm includes small quantities of, plantain, papaya, carrots, onions, yam, coco yams and sweet pepper, and the harvested food is donated to local orphanages and community care centres. The farm is also home to rabbits, guinea pigs, and chickens. Groups also help arrange trips for local schools to visit the site. Children are then educated on the process of growing crops in a sustainable environment. The group can also teach the children how to take care of animals, and how to identify seeds. Farming volunteers assist with: • Caring for animals • Crop growing • Flower production • Land management • Composting and weeding In addition to this, volunteers will also have the opportunity to spend some time at one of our Care placements. In order to avoid the midday heat, farming work generally takes place in the mornings, leaving the afternoons free for volunteers to help out at the village’s school, playing games, teaching some basic English or doing arts and crafts with the children. At the weekend, the group will have the opportunity to travel to Cape Coast and the Kakum National Park, where you’ll have the opportunity to learn more about Ghana’s colonial history and its current culture, as well as a chance to take in some of the stunning scenery and views of various animals from a forest canopy.
