Descriptive writing using adjectives and adverbs
In writing we use adjectives to describe nouns (things, objects, names). Often the adjectives come just before the noun:
the funny picture
a bright day
If we have two adjectives next to each other we put a comma between them.
a big , strong gorilla some tall , green trees
Sometimes the adjectives are further away from the noun.
The pool was warm and blue.
Willy woke up feeling brave and heroic.
We also use adverbs to tell us a bit more about adjectives we have used.
the very funny picture a really big, strong gorilla
The pool was extremely warm and amazingly blue.
What to do: 1. On the Profile page, draw a picture of either Willy, Millie or Buster Nose. 2. Under the picture, write descriptive sentences about your character. 3. Use adjectives and adverbs in your description. 4. Remember to put a comma between two adjectives as needed. 5. Try using some of these adverbs if you get stuck.
really quite very extremely
amazingly incredibly impressively extraordinarily

Prepositional Phrases
Describing where things are, we use prepositions to help us be specific.
in on under above below inside next to between underneath beside
through with over behind in front of on top of from
• Shy Willie stood behind the brick wall. • Millie sat quietly between Willy and her friend. • The horrible gorilla gang swam in the pool.
The preposition allows us to add a short phrase to a description.
What to do:
1. Choose one of the funny things going on in the picture and on In the Park...
2. Write a sentence about it that includes a prepositional phrase: Tarzan is flying through the trees.
3. Now do the same for all the other funny things you spotted. Try to use a different preposition in each sentence.
4. Can you use two prepositions in the same sentence? Tarzan is flying through the trees on a bright yellow rope.

(this might include the pictures as well as the writing).

Tell it to the Dog
If you have had an awful day
and no one wants to come and play and all your woes
won’t go away, just tell it to the dog.
If everybody picks on you
and all your plans have fallen through;
if you feel lonely, sad and blue,
just tell it to the dog.
Dogs do not judge. They understand. They rub your leg.
They lick your hand. If you feel lost
in no-man’s-land just tell it to the dog.
Dogs keep your secrets safe within.
They don’t care if you lose or win.
So turn that frown into a grin
and tell it to the dog.
(Or, failing that, make do with the cat…)

Writing a Rhyming Poem
Instructions: 1. Think of the pet or animal for your poem, e.g. a hamster. This will be your title on your Poem Planner: Tell it to the Hamster. 2. Reread the first line of the poem: If you have had an awful day... 3. At the end of the second line, in the yellow box, add a word that rhymes with day. If you are not sure which word to use, try one these…
stay say tray grey may spray clay hooray away 4. Now write the sad, ‘moany‘ line that ends in the rhyming word you have chosen: and the sky has been all cloudy and grey. 5. On the next line, add in your animal’s name: Just tell it to the hamster. 6. Reread the next line of the poem, If everybody picks on you, 7. Fill in the next yellow box with a word that rhymes with you. Use your own word or try one of these:
shoe too queue loo do few goo true boo new
8. Write the sad, ‘moany’ line that ends in that rhyming word: and you managed to get stuck in the loo, 9. Again, add your animal’s name to the next line: Just tell it to the hamster. 10. Do the same thing one last time for the line: Hamsters do not judge, they understand.
grand sand band hand brand land planned e.g. They... bounce around like a rubber band. 11. Complete the last line on the Planner: Just tell it to the hamster!

The Magic Pebble
My favourite thing is a pebble That I found on a beach in Wales It looks like any other But its magic never fails. It does my homework for me Makes difficult sums seem clear School dinners taste delicious It makes teachers disappear It turns water into lemonade A bully into a frog When I’m in need of company It becomes a friendly dog
One, two, three and Whoosh! You’re in a foreign land Space travel is so easy Simply hold it in your hand Close your eyes and make a wish And wish your wish comes true For the magic in this pebble Has been waiting here for you.
