In April and May one of the worlds most spectacular and dangerous ritualcustoms takes place on the tiny island of Pentecost about one hours ying timefrom Port Vila.

The annual Nangol or Pentecost land dive has made headlines all over theworldsince the local tribal elders and government allowed outsiders in to see thespectacleof men wearing only traditional nambas or penis sheaths leaping off a30 metre high tower constructed from tree trunks and creeper vines and free fallingto what seems like certain death with their arms held across their chest in a tranceand relying on just two vines tied around their ankles and tethered to the top of theplatform to save them from at the very least, serious injury.

The platform collapses when the vines snap taut only a few feet from theground and the divers head clears the ground by just a few centimetres, hurling himbackwards to land triumphantly on his feet to wild applause and dancing from the village.

The Pentecost dive originated hundreds, perhaps thousands of years ago, nobodyreally knows and was or iginal ly performed only every ve years, closed to alloutsiders.

Legend has it that a woman was repeatedly abused and mis-treated by herhusband cal led Tamalie. She ran away only to be caught time and time again and to bepunished and given more of the same treatment. She nally climbed up one of the tallestbanyan trees to escape from her husbands abuse with Tamalie climbing up after herthreatening her once again . When she reached to top she dared him to follow her, mocking his cowardice and jumped out of the tree having been smart enough to tievines to her ankles beforehand. Tamalie, taunted by his wifes hurtful accusationsof cowardice and not noticing the vines around her ankles was astonished to seeher land on her feet and threw himself after her to his death.

As Vanuatu is a male dominated society and this event was considered one ofthe few occasions that a woman had totally outsmarted a man, the event wasreconstructed annual ly at rst by the village women. Somewhere along the li ne

the men took over the event in order to re-address their shame and toprove their courage to the women and eventually the jump

became the premiere annual custom coinciding withthe yam harvest on Pentecost island.

Legends from Vanuatu - custom story

    The Legend of Kava(Maewo)

This is a story from Nabanga, a book of superb custom stories put together by Paul Gardisaat.

The book is available for sale at the Cultural Museum.

The story here is reproduced with permission from the Cultural Centre

At one time on Maewo, there was a strange man whofed on human esh. His namewas Aso. He reigned in terrorover the whole island. Whenhis appetite pushed him to lurknear villages, men, women, andchildren would all run in fearscreaming, Be careful! Thehorrible man-eater is coming!

The inhabitants of the islandcould never live in peace. Theywere always worried.

Aso had a wife who wasvery ugly. She was a witch whoprepared his cannibalistic meals.Often, it was she who hunted theirprey. While Aso liked fat bodies,well-fed on wild pigs, she preferredyoung children who were moretender and less fatty. This was nodoubt because Tagaro had neverallowed this terrible woman to havea child of her own.

In one of the villages whereAso often went to hunt hisfood, a man had just married abeautiful woman. They were bothvery happy. However, wars werefrequent and one day, the younghusband had to go off to ght.

Alas, he never returned becausehe was killed by the rst arrow that

was shot. The woman cried a lot, soaking herself with the tears oflove. Her only consolation was tosee her stomach move. Indeed, she was pregnant by her handsomehusband, her courageous warrior.

A little while later, she gavebirth to magnicent twins on the

island of Maewo. These childrengrew. They ate taro, yams, sh and

pigs. As every man from Maewoneeds to know how to ght, their

    mother taught them.

I will teach you the workof a man, she said. One day,you must know how to kill your

enemies without them killing yourst. That is the law of our island.

Here is a bow. Take it and becareful when the string rebounds. Here is your fathers nalnal. It isheavy so hold it well. In a littlewhile, you will know how to usethese weapons. Go and practice. But beware, my children. Aso isdangerous. His wife is a cunningogress. They live in that direction,so you should never go there. They will eat you like they haveeaten others. You dont have afather anymore, and I dont havea husband. I only have you.

The twins listened to theirmother closely, but she hadonly peaked their curiosity. They

told themselves that they hadbecome men and that they hadthe necessary weapons to defendthemselves. Thus, they daredapproach Asos house. It was thehorrible woman that welcomedthem.

I am so sorry. Also is not here, but he wont be long. Go and wait

for him in the nakamal and I willcall you when he comes, she toldthem.

The two children went into thenakamal to wait. The evil womanthen called her husband by singing,

Aso Aso Ruru netunku AsoRuru netunku Aso Gandaru tamatemo toga lo gamali Gamu letuagiganku letuagi Aso, Aso, Aso

Aso, in his garden, heard thesong. There must be somethinghappening, he said to himself.Maybe my wife has found somefresh meat! and he greedily rubbedhis hands together.

As his wife continued to sing,he yelled, Im coming, Im coming, evil creature that I love!

Aso arrive in the nasara andsaid, So, my ugly one, what haveyou prepared for me? At least ameal t for Tagaro, I hope!

    The woman laughed, My

friend, there are two boys whohave come to see you. They arewaiting in the nakamal.

She laughed louder and louder.Aso went to see the children. Theywere amusing themselves bymaking sand drawings. Aso tried tobe very likeable.

I am charmed by your visit and

very pleased that you want to get toknow me. But rst, he suggested,

lets go eat in my house.

The children responded,Thank you, Aso, we are so veryhungry.

Aso sat them down in hishouse and went to get some laplap. However, the twins had understoodhis plan.

One of them said to the other,He wants to kill us while werebusy eating. We should eat oneafter another, so that one of usis always on guard and ready toght.

They organised themselvesso well so that Aso was unable toattack them during the meal. So hecame up with another trick.

Now, he said to them, youwill kill the lice that is making myhead itch.

    Good idea, said the children.

We will kill them and eat them. Laydown over there.

Aso laid down on the ground, and the children caressed him sogently that he was soon asleep. The twins smiled when they heardhim snore. They then attached hisbraids, one by one, to a beam inhis house. When Aso nally woke

up, he couldnt move. The more hemoved, the more it hurt him.

One of the children told him,We know that you eat men. Asogroaned, No, thats not true. Havepity and let me go.

The twins did not take pity onhim, and killed him with a sharpblow of the nalnal and then setre to his house. They then went

to Asos wife and said, Horriblewoman, spread your legs. We wantto see what you have there.

The woman laughed andrefused to obey. The childreninsisted. They had heated a blackstone used to cook laplap and wereholding it between wooden pincerscalled gaibala in the languageof Maewo. The old woman nally

spread her legs. Then, one of thetwins shoved the burning stoneinside of her and the ogressscreamed in pain.

    Here is your payment, said

one of the children. We have killedAso and now its your turn to die.

They killed the woman with ablow of the nalnal and they set herhouse on re. They left behind the

stone with which they had burnt thewitchs sex. The twins announcedthe death of Aso and his wife, and

everyone from all the neighbouringvillages came to see.

Oh, one of the twins cried, look at the plant that is growingfrom the place where we left thestone.

Another man asked, Do youthink that it is good?

They saw a rat eating a branchfrom the young bush. Its behaviourbecame bizarre; it started to danceand sway its head from side toside. When the drunken rat left, ithad problems getting back into itshole. Thus, the men grated the rootof the plant and drank its juice. Ittasted like earth but each man said,I feel very good.

The men of Ambae came tobuy some pigs on Maewo. Theytried this new drink and took it backto their island. Kava made menhappy: they love it like they lovetheir women because kava wasborn of a woman.

This legend was given inBislama to Peter Crowe by AlbertTovotu of Fingalato, sa little vil-lage in the heights of Ambae.

    Adapted by Paul Gardissat.
