The ACQUITY UPLC® I-Class provides

the most powerful solution to the most

critical needs in separation science

today – successfully analyzing

compounds that are limited in amount

or availability amid a complex matrix,

more rapidly than ever before.

The ACQUITY UPLC story began in 2004,

when Waters introduced UPLC® Technology

to the world. Since then, the ACQUITY

UPLC family of systems has moved the

entire analytical industry forward.

The newest member of the ACQUITY

UPLC family, the ACQUITY UPLC I-Class

System, represents the next advancement

in liquid chromatography.

With UPLC, laboratories like yours

have conquered workflow bottlenecks,

improved the quality of information from

assays, and reduced solvent use. UPLC

fundamentally makes laboratories more

efficient and environmentally sound,

while making science-driven

organizations more effective.

Scientists are looking for answers to their

most complex challenges. The ACQUITY

UPLC I-Class System provides the

unmatched resolution and peak capacity

necessary to achieve more meaningful

information from chromatographic

separations – the very information

that drives critical decisions in any

science-based organization.

Simply put, the ACQUITY UPLC I-Class

is the highest performing LC instrument

available today.

Separation of a complex sample: Extract from Hoodia gordonii

Interrogation of information-rich samples requires a UPLC system that provides the highest quality information. The separation was achieved using the ACQUITY UPLC I-Class with a Xevo® G2 QTof and a 1.8-µm ACQUITY UPLC HSS T3 2.1 x 100 mm Column.

Extract of Hoodia gordonii was analyzed in collaboration with Ikhlas A. Khan, Ph.D., and Bharathi Avula, Ph.D., from the National Center for Natural Products Research, Research Institute of Pharmaceutical Sciences at The University of Mississippi.

ACQUITY UPLC I-Class System Optimized UHPLC system

UPLC vs. UHPLC: A clear difference

UPLC separations are defined by the use of sub-2-µm particle column packing materials that reduce dispersion during the separation. When total dispersion from the column and the system together is minimized, resolution and sensitivity are maximized. To realize the full benefits of sub-2-µm columns, the LC instrument must be optimized to preserve the high-efficiency separation.

In this example, the impurity analysis of tetracaine was run under the same conditions on the ACQUITY UPLC I-Class System (system dispersion of 5.5 µL) and a UHPLC system (system dispersion of 20 µL). Although the UHPLC system was optimized for lowest possible dispersion and system volume, the impact of system dispersion is clearly evident. Significantly better resolution was achieved with the ACQUITY UPLC I-Class System.

Next-generation column compartments

Column compartments for the ACQUITY UPLC

I-Class System are designed for system-to-system

equivalence as well as to provide versatility,

flexibility, and practicality for the chemistry and

conditions your analysis requires. Our low-volume

Column Heaters and Managers offer best-in-class

dispersion and extended peak capacity.

■■ Take advantage of two-

column flexibility, with

independent thermal zones

for each column. With an

extended temperature

range of 4 to 90 °C, the

system enables you to

change between methods

and columns, and enables

unattended operation when

throughput is critical.

■■ The Column Manager

can be configured with

interchangeable valves for

serial column runs with a

second ACQUITY UPLC

pump to support all the

functionality and flexibility

of 2D technology.

■■ Active solvent

pre-heating with unique

low-volume tubing:

Combines the lowest

possible dispersion

with consistent thermal

performance for accurate,

repeatable results.

Promotes accurate thermal

fidelity, resulting in uniform

efficiency system to system.

Whenever a method is

transferred between an

ACQUITY UPLC I-Class

or an ACQUITY UPLC

H-Class system, the

relative retention times

(or chromatographic

fidelity of the separation)

are preserved.

next generationDiscover the The scientific discoveries

with the biggest potential to

improve our lives often rely

on samples and compounds

that are the most difficult to

understand. The ACQUITY

UPLC I-Class System was

designed specifically for the

rapid pace of laboratories on

the cutting edge of research.

The ACQUITY UPLC I-Class

System tackles challenging

analyses that require

maximizing resolution of

sub-2-µm particles while

minimizing extra-column

effects. Minimal sample

carryover provides greater

confidence in results.

Reduced dispersion and

small peak volumes extend

the sensitivity of any

mass spectrometer.

With the ability to optimize

high throughput analyses,

you’ll find a more accurate

answer rapidly, without

compromising data quality.

You’ll reduce the risk of not

finding your compound of

interest or its impurities at

the lowest possible levels.

The system enables you to

take on the most demanding

separations with utmost

confidence in your results.

Finally – you have the

flexibility and resolving

power to measure and

analyze extremely

small quantities from

complex matrices.

Liquid chromatography’s theoretical maximum

As the flow rate in a gradient separation is increased, peak capacity achieves a theoretical maximum. The ACQUITY UPLC I-Class System allows you to approach the theoretical peak capacity for your separation by providing the necessary pressure range.

Better results for your science. And your business.

Like the ACQUITY UPLC and

the ACQUITY UPLC H-Class,

the ACQUITY UPLC I-Class

uses dramatically less

solvent than standard LC

instruments – which means

less solvent to buy, and

less solvent to dispose.

So your laboratory is

saving money and helping

the environment.

of discovery.

Power for ballistic gradients

The low dispersion characteristics of the ACQUITY UPLC I-Class System allow you to push your separations to a new level. This ballistic gradient for a series of anesthetics achieved standard deviations for retention time as low as 12 ms for six replicates. The separation achieved a peak capacity of 46 in 10 s with a 1/2 height peak width as low as 88 ms.

■■ There’s more to UPLC than high pressure

The industry-leading performance of an ACQUITY UPLC I-Class

System is made possible by purposeful engineering of its binary

solvent manager. This maximizes the utility of high pressures under the

stringent conditions required to achieve an optimal chromatographic

separation, while maintaining robustness and reproducibility.

Our holistic system design approach delivers the best resolution

and throughput, and is ideal for ballistic gradients and other fast,

challenging separations.
