For so much, what shall we repay?

Welcome to the start of Term 3, 2021. I hope everyone has enjoyed the school winter break.

Even with the challenges we are facing due to COVDI-19, it was fabulous to see on Tuesday the return of our students and how energised and ready they were to start learning.

On Monday staff returned to school for a School Development Day which focussed on current updates related to COVID-19, school improvements, ADHD and classroom strategies, the Sentral Parent and Student App and finally the Student Behaviour Strategy implemented by the NSW Department of Education.

A very warm welcome to our new staff members, Bridget Lafferty (Visual Arts) and Zoe Nisbet (HSIE). It is exciting to have Mrs Lafferty in our school community with a creative flair. Also, it is rewarding and a pleasure to have a former student, Miss Nisbet from our school to be teaching at the school.

At present, we are still planning the parent/teacher interviews (Years 7-12) to be held on Wednesday 28 July. I am confident everyone appreciates in the current COVID-19 situation that the format and timing of this event may change. The Years 7-10 reports will be posted home prior to the parent/teacher interviews on Thursday 22 July.

Although, changes may occur in the coming weeks our focus on student learning and teachers teaching will be maintained.

We pay our respects to the Wiradjuri and Nari Nari peoples who are the traditional custodians of the land on which we learn and work and also pay our respects to their Elders past, present and emerging.

Debating success Well done to the Year 7 debating team who had a convincing win against Yanco today. The Hay team were successful in arguing that we should not ban all advertising aimed at kids. First speaker was Savannah Mohr who started the team off strongly. She was followed by Miranda Griffiths. Miranda was recruited at the last minute and did a fabulous job with three convincing arguments. Wendy Atkins, tied it all together with her many rebuttals. We have been advised that regional NSW will remain on Level 2 restrictions, until at least 30 July, to provide the community with protection from the spread of the virus outside of Greater Sydney.

Students should not attend school if unwell, even with mild symptoms of COVID-19. Any person with any COVID-19 symptoms should be sent home and should not return until they have received a negative test result and are symptom-free. In circumstances where children have other medical reasons for recurrent symptoms a letter from their GP is sufficient to negate the requirement for a negative test.

Anyone who is unwell with COVID-19 symptoms is strongly encouraged to get tested and self-isolate until a negative result is received.

Face masks While at school, masks or face coverings are recommended (but not mandatory) in all indoor settings for:

• all students in Year 7 and above • all staff in school settings.

Face masks for students and staff can be removed in a building if it impacts student learning, staff communication and the health of students and/or teachers.

Masks are mandatory on public transport. This applies to students aged 13 years and over, and staff when travelling to and from school and during school excursions by public transport or by chartered or private transport services.

Parents, carers, contractors, P & C canteen staff and service providers will need to wear a face mask upon entry to a school building until further notice.

Attending school Staff and students must not attend work or school if unwell, even with mild symptoms of COVID-19. Any person with any COVID-19 symptoms must be sent home and not return to school unless: • they have isolated for 10 days, when no medical certificate is available • they have a negative COVID-19 test result and are symptom free.

In circumstances where children or staff have other medical reasons for recurrent symptoms, a letter from their GP is sufficient to negate the requirement for a negative test.

COVID-19 A reminder for all families (Level 2)

For so much, what shall we repay?

Three Hay War Memorial High School students competed in the Combined High Schools NSW Squash Championships at Coffs Harbour last term, returning with two medals.

Following selection in the Riverina team, Ben Caughey, Kirby Pingiaro and Georgia Booth competed in singles and doubles games in the team competition, and in singles match-ups as part of the individual championship.

Competing against the best in the state, and in some cases Australia, the students came up against tough and skilled competition.

In the team event round robin held over the first two days, all three enjoyed significant court time and experienced mixed success. With more wins than losses to her name, Georgia was a key contributor to the Riverina girls team’s third placing, earning her a bronze medal. The Riverina boys team placed fifth overall.

The Hay players showed particular skill in the doubles matches, and attributed their advantage in these games to the local social doubles squash competitions played in the off-season. This was particularly evident when the boys team lost three out of four singles games to the North Coast, but squared the match score after winning both doubles games 21-20 in nail-biting finishes.

In the singles championship, the Hay players were knocked out in the first two rounds by top five ranked players, moving them into the plate draw. Both Ben and Georgia finished runners-up in the open plate draw finals, while Kirby was eliminated one round before the under 15s boys final.

At the conclusion of the carnival, Ben was awarded the Riverina Medal for sportsmanship by the team convenor.

“It was a privilege to witness the incredible skill level of some of these players, and have the chance to play against them. I just hope I learnt something from those floggings to improve my game,” explained Ben.

Georgia similarly benefitted from watching others and learning from them.

“It was an awesome experience and I would definitely love to do it again.”

After also competing in the Green Shield junior tournament at Parkes and Forbes the weekend before, Kirby considers he has gained so much more confidence and experience. At only 13 years of age, Kirby is one of the youngest players selected to play for the Riverina in the high school competition, and will be a player to watch in the future.

“I thoroughly enjoyed the competition, but the greatest achievement from the week was making new friends and forming bonds with my fellow Riverina teammates,” he said.

The Riverina team were very social, supportive, and enthusiastic about their squash. They took to the spare courts together every opportunity they had for a practice hit or entertaining new challenge.

Ben, Kirby and Georgia will continue their squash journeys as the Hay War Memorial High School teams progress in the NSW school teams competition.

The annual official school photos will be taken on Monday, 26 July (Week 3). All students will have their individual photo taken and be part of the year group photo. It does not matter if families are purchasing photos or not, all students are included.

All student have or will be given a personalised photo envelope by their Year Advisor. If this envelope is misplaced the front office has spare envelopes. Any parent/carers wanting family photos can ask their child to pick up a family photo envelope from the front office.

Preferred payment is electronic payment directly to MSP, the photography company. Details are on the photo envelope of how to do this. If parents/carers wish to pay with cash they have to put the correct money in the envelope and return it to the front office, before photo day for safe keeping. If there is more than one child in a family, all the money may go in one child’s envelope.

Students are asked to wear the traditional uniform on photo day. For girls this is the school kilt or black or brown trousers, not tracksuit pants or leggings, and the brown school jumper/sloppy joe. Boys should wear grey trousers or shorts and the grey school jumper. All students are asked to wear their black school shoes. If students could clean their shoes for photo day it enhances the photos as students in the front row shoes are seen.

Riverina Cross Country Congratulations to the Clarke boys, Devlin and Nate who attended Riverina Cross Country in Gundagai. Both boys ran extremely well and are congratulated on their effort. Nate who placed 1st in his age group was to head to Sydney but it has been postponed. Under 15’s Boys AFL – Deniliquin On Thursday 27 May the Under 15’s boys AFL side travelled to Deniliquin to play in a round robin of matches. The first match kicked off against Finley, a side with more experience and size, and who defeated Hay by a large margin. The second game was played against Barham, who started quickly, and our boys were unable to overcome this deficit. The team performed extremely well and their conduct both on and off the field was exemplary. Well done to Jensen Hargreaves for captaining the team on the day and big thanks to student coaches, Jim Houston and Daniel Stewart.
