Restorative Practices As part of our teacher’s ongoing professional learning with restorative practices, we are now practicing restorative circles at our staff meetings. Teachers are building up their skills so they can effectively implement the circles. Restorative circles have two main goals for students, teachers, parents, staff and community: building a peaceful community in the school and responding through positive dialogue. As a result, people feel that they are seen, heard and respected.

NSW Department of Education Virtual Selective High School

Last week four of our students enrolled in the NSW Department of Education’s Virtual Selective High School, Aurora College attended the week long residential camp in Sydney. James Kelson was awarded his "Galaxy" medal and a Certificate of Distinction for the National Computer Science Schools Competition and Distinction Certificate for the Australian National Chemistry Quiz. Bailey Caughey was also awarded with his Galaxy medal.

Día de los Muertos This term in Visual Arts, Year 8 have been studying the traditional Mexican celebration, Día de los Muertos. During the festivities, family and friends gather to remember those who have passed away. It is not a day of sadness, but rather, a colourful commemoration abundant with traditional foods, the distinctive marigold flower, and skulls. In anticipation of this cultural holiday at the beginning of November, students have been designing their own calavera (skulls) with reference to traditional Mexican calavera decoration. In the art room, both Year 8 classes constructed their own ofrenda, or altar, in memory of famous Mexican artist, Frida Kahlo. On Friday 1 November, students made their own sugar skull cookies, a common symbol of this celebration.

Year 9 CSU Future Moves Excursion On Thursday six Year 9 students took up the opportunity to attend CSU for a day to find out more about study at uni and what the CSU campus looks like. The students found out specific information in workshops on physics, psychology and drama/performance and about these courses and careers in these fields. The presenters also spoke about related courses. The career opportunities are important for students to attend as they might find out about a course or career they are interested or have limited knowledge in. They also provide information and experiences that enable them to make an informed decision about a career they may not be interested in.

Women in STEM and Inspiration Day, Griffith Regional Development Australia is showcasing STEM careers in an activities day at Griffith Regional Theatre on Tuesday, 12 November (Week 5).
