What is ADLAY?Adlay (Coix lacryma jobi L.) is one of the most promising cereal that is seen as an alternative to rice and corn.
Comes from the family Poaceae or the grasses, the same family that wheat, corn, and rice belong
Adlay is said to have originated in East Asia and Southeast Asia
Grains are soft-shelled forms (for eating)
Hard-shelled ones for ornamentation (necklace)
ORIGIN AND DISTRIBUTION
MINDANAO AREAS:1. Region 9 – Ipil, Zamboanga del Sur2. Region 10 – Malaybalay, Bukidnon3. Region 11 – Davao City4. Region 12 – Kidapawan City5. Region 13 – CARAGA6. ARMM
What is ADLAY?
It is freely branching upright herb that can grow as tall as 3 feet.
Grains are separated from the stalks through threshing
Seeds are first sun dried before milling
What is ADLAY?
Usually propagated by seeds
Normally harvested 4-6 months after sowing
Whole plants are cut at the base when the grain is ripe
Produces ratoon after harvest
What is ADLAY?
Common throughout the country but not to the same extent as other cereal crops like corn and rice with which one can easily identified.
It is considered a weed in some places but is prized as a source of raw materials for necklace and bracelets in others.
It is made into kakanin and wine by some of the local tribes.
What is ADLAY?
Produces an average of 30 panicles per stem
Each stem can have 250g of dry grains (unmilled)
Seed requirement – 10 kls/ha
Average yield – 2-4 tons/ha
What is ADLAY?
Can be planted in high elevation areas
Can also be planted as hedgerows, and intercropped with fruit trees and plantation crops
PRODUCTION MANAGEMENT
Land Preparation Apply manure and compost before
plowing Plow and harrow the area 3 times
Seed Preparation/Planting
Soak the seeds in pure water for 8 hours and incubate in 4 hours prior to planting
PRODUCTION MANAGEMENT
Planting Distance Make furrows spaced at 90 cm to allow
the plant to produce more productive tillers. Sow 2 seeds per hill at a distance of 60 cm between hills.
Basal Fertilizer ApplicationAdlai is more productive when animal manure and compost are applied before plowing at the rate of 2 tons/ha.
PRODUCTION MANAGEMENT
Cultivation and Maintenance
Thinning At 2 weeks after planting, pull-out excess plants to
maintain at most two plants per hill.
Off-barring At 3-4 weeks after planting, cultivate between rows to
remove weeds.
Hilling-up 45 days after planting, hill-up within rows. Control
subsequent weed growth by hand weeding.
Pest Management Integrated Pest Management (IPM) practices were
employed using Trichogramma evanescence to control Stem borer.
HARVESTING AND POSTHARVEST OPERATION
The crop can be harvested by cutting its branches and stems at one foot from ground level at 120 days after planting.
Grains can be separated from panicle by threshing and/or smashing (lambos).
Dry grains to 14% moisture content (MC).
Adlay can be milled through rice and corn mills. It has a 45% milling recovery.
Ratooning can be done 2-3 times after harvest of the main crop
Harvesting is done when grains is about 80% brown in color.
ADLAY SPECIES: Coix lacryma-jobi var. mayuen
Harvested as a cereal crop and is used medicinally in parts of Asia.
Drought tolerant, low water requirement
Coix lacryma-jobi var. lacryma-jobi Has hard shelled pseudocarps which are very hard, pearly white, oval structures, used as beads for making accessories
Can be found in swampy areas
• Can also be made into flour for baking purposes and other delicacies
ADLAY AS FOOD
MAJA
AROZCALDO
ADLAY SUSHI
ADLAY AS BEVERAGES
Good ingredient in soups and broths
A tea can be made from the parched seeds
Beers and wines are made from its fermented grains
Coffee is made from the roasted seeds
ADLAY AS MEDICINE
It is commonly used as medicine in China as one of the most popular food herbs used in diet therapy for painful and stiff joints.
Known to have anti-inflammatory, antihistaminic, muscle relaxant, fever reducing and sugar lowering properties.
