What makes something alive?Observe the objects on the lab table. Is it alive? What makes you say so?

Make a chart. Write down what you see and your observations. Why is it alive or not?

Life Processes

Life processes are biological/cellular activities that  maintain homeostasis, keep the organism alive and propagate the species.

The life processes are metabolism, nutrition, transport, cellular respiration, synthesis, excretion, regulation, growth & development and reproduction.

1. Metabolism  includes all the chemical reactions that maintain homeostasis.  These metabolic (chemical) reactions occur in all the other life processes.

Nutrition

   Heterotrophic Nutrition    Autotrophic Nutrition

O

Consuming other organisms or pre-made organic molecules.

Steps: ingestion, digestion, absorption, egestion

The process of obtaining food and processing the food for use by the organism.

Two types:

Producing organic molecules from inorganic molecules

Photosynthesis uses energy from the sun.

Chemosynthesis uses energy from chemicals (other molecules)

TransportF

Absorption of materials and movement of materials around inside a cell and inside and organism. Circulation or cyclosis.

Sep 1112:27 PM

Cellular RespirationO

Releasing ENERGY from food for use by the organism or cell. Two types: Aerobic and anaerobic

SynthesisO

Small molecules (monomers) are combined (bonded) to form larger molecules (macro molecules)

The metabolic process that combines small molecules to build larger molecules.

Complex moleculesSmall molecules

Sep 1112:28 PM

 Excretion F

Getting rid of metabolic wastes

 Regulation O

All activities that involve maintaining homeostasis and allows organisms to respond to changes in the environment.

Sep 1112:28 PM

8. Growth and DevelopmentF

Getting bigger (increase cell size or cell number) and changes that occur as an organism matures.

ReproductionO

Making new organisms.

sexual reproduction

Two Types:

asexual reproduction

What does it mean to maintain homeostasis?

You drink when you are thirsty, your urine is more watery when you've consumed more fluid than you need.

Organisms must eat regularly.

Animals must breathe. They take in O2 and breathe out CO2.

Our pancreas secretes insulin into our blood after we eat a meal and secretes glucagon when we haven't eaten for a while.
