what kind of media institution might distribute your media product and why
TRANSCRIPT
Working Title are a mainstream
film production company –
previously independent.
They create high budget films
with the help of their $600m deal
with Universal allowing them for
funding and distribution on an
international scale. Must consult Universal if they
want to create a film with a
budget greater than $30m.
However Working Title don’t take
as many risks as independent
companies so use standard
conventions in their films and
don’t break the rules.
WARP Films are an independent film production
company which often create
films of a budget of £400k -
£800k. They typically create
unsolicited films which are
rule breaking, unusual,
experimental and quite
specific rather than general
unlike Working Title. Normally will not have any
well known directors or
actors for the films.

Personally I think my media product is
more in tune with WARP films, but
aspects of Working Title are
implemented too. It is low budget, the
actors are amateur and we aren’t
experienced directors. However our
storyline is more typical of Working Title
as we didn’t really experiment and break
the rules. We went for a conventional
thriller storyline of “a family member or
friend dies, go and avenge his death”.
My film’s storyline is about a man who
wants to avenge his brother who was
murdered in broad daylight. At the end
of the opening, the protagonist readies
his gun to avenge his brother before
ending leaving the audience with
messages unanswered – what will he do,
how will he find him, will he be
successful?

WARP films I think will distribute my film because
even though it doesn’t fit with their style of having
a unique plot, unusual and strange conventions
etc, it still uses codes and conventions similar to
them. On the other hand Working Title will like the
conventions used in my film as they suit more of a
passive audience which watch their films. The
camera techniques are quite standard – pans,
tracking shots, high angle, low angle etc. Working
Title and Warp both use these in their films, but
Working Title may get cranes to do establishing
shots, or to show a chase scene in vehicles for
example. So in terms of camera techniques, I was
restricted to a finite amount similar to WARP when
producing their films. Also if Working Title were to
distribute my film it would have to meet a very
high standard, against the likes of Les Miserables
and Hot Fuzz so if the audience do not like the film
it would give them bad press. WARP on the other
hand will produce a mixture of things, so may be
willing to take a risk with distributing my film as it
may appeal to audiences who like WARP films’
productions as it may offer a plot and conventions
that are more niche than most films.
