What is Sigrelandia?

• Sigrelandia was created as an educational tool to raise awareness among pupils in the final cycle of Primary Education of the need to make responsible use of medicines and to properly recycle waste medicines and packaging.

• Conceived as an educational resource to be taught in the classroom, under the guidance and supervision of a teacher, Sigrelandia is also a marvellous tool for other health professionals such as pharmacists, doctors or nurses, allowing them to approach schools and explain to pupils the different phases of the medicine cycle, from research right through to recycling waste.

• Sigrelandia is also an educational game that reproduces a city with various medicine-related scenarios (laboratory, health centre, pharmacy, etc.), through which pupils come into contact with the life cycle of the medicinal product and the proper way to recycle its waste.

• In each scenario, they are told about the work that is done there, they are given a number of tips and recommendations and finally, they are provided with a game of skill to be played like a test, to obtain an "Environmental Defender" Diploma at the end of the visit to the city.

• The contents and design of Sigrelandia were developed in tandem with a team of educational experts and following the advice of the Faculty of Education at the Universidad Complutense of Madrid, to adapt them to the subjects of "Environmental Awareness" and "English", since it is written and voiced over in Spanish and English.

• The city can be visited: by connecting to the internet at www.sigrelandia.es, or offline, using a CD containing the application.

• This application can be downloaded from the SIGRE website www.sigre.es, or you can order a copy of the CD by sending an e-mail to: [email protected]

• What technical requirements are needed?

• A computer, a speaker and a projector for the teacher, tutor or professional who will run the activity.

• If sufficient resources are available in the classroom or school, we recommend using one computer for every one or two pupils.

• Internet connection to access the website or, alternatively, the CD with the application.

What is SIGRE?

SIGRE is a non profit-making institution

SIGRE is the body responsible in Spain for managing the collection of packaging waste and expired or unused

medicines in the home to give them the correct environmental treatment.

5

Page 6: What is Sigrelandia?3 What is SIGRE?5 About this manual 8 Welcome to SIGRELANDIA Homepage 10

What is SIGRE?

The pharmaceutical industry funds SIGRE's

operations.100% of pharmaceutical

companies are affiliated to SIGRE

The entire pharmaceutical sector takes part in SIGRE

Pharmacies advise the public and also serve as

the collection points ("Puntos SIGRE") for

collecting these waste products.

Distribution companies remove them from the

pharmacies and store them in their warehouses.

The pharmaceutical industry is also responsible for making sure that drug

packaging is more environmentally friendly

There are over 21,000 Puntos SIGRE in Spanish

pharmacies

140 distribution warehouses take part in the

national collection effort

What is SIGRE?

... make them smaller, while ensuring all safety measures

SIGRE’s recycling cycle begins in the pharmaceutical laboratories that apply ecodesign measures in their packaging in order to ...

... use recycled materials or those that are easily

recyclable

... make them lighter so that transport and storage are

more environmentally friendly

On the environmental front: to avoid packaging and unused medicines from being thrown in the rubbish or down the drain and therefore harm the environment

On the health front: to remove unused medicines from the home and prevent accidents through improper administration or because they are expired or in poor condition

SIGRE aims to act:

Home pageThere are three buttons at the top of the home page :

• What is Sigrelandia?: Brief explanation of the objectives and purpose of the page and the site map.

• Help: This explains what we will see and, above all, what we have to do to win the games at the end of the visit to each scenario.

• English/Spanish: To change the language in which you want to visit the city. The visit and the explanations of each of the characters that appear are written and commented in both languages.

Click on the “ENTER" button to start the visit.

To enter the city and start visiting the scenarios, each student, or the person who will direct the activity, if there is only one computer in the classroom, must identify themselves with a name or nick that they will choose. This nick will identify the character during the visit.

You must also fill in the fields of the school and the province, and accept the "Legal Notice". These details will not be used by SIGRE for any communication and are taken for statistical purposes only.

The visit begins: visitor identification

11

Page 12: What is Sigrelandia?3 What is SIGRE?5 About this manual 8 Welcome to SIGRELANDIA Homepage 10

The next step is to choose a character from the four that appear on the screen.

Once the lead character is selected, we are given the chance to dress him or her as we like: with glasses or a cap, with blue or brown hair, with a t-shirt or sweatshirt, etc.

Once the they have been characterised, we click OK to move to the next screen and choose the means of transport we will use to get around the city and go from one scenario to another.

Once we have selected the means of transport (bike, scooter, skateboard, etc.) we click on "My character is ready" and go into the city.

This screen shows the five scenarios to be visited: •pharmaceutical laboratory•health centre•private home •pharmacy•recycling plant

The places can be visited in any order, although for the purpose of recycling, it is advisable to follow the order mentioned in the previous section.

At the bottom of the screen we see our character with the name we have chosen, ready for us to tell which place we want to visit first. To do this, place the mouse over the arrow on this scenario and "click".

At the bottom right of the screen, under the drawing of the town, we can turn the background music on or off.

Let's go to the pharmaceutical laboratory.

General view of the city

Just as we look after the environment in our city, the pharmaceutical sector takes care of the environment throughout the life cycle of the medicine: research, production, packaging, distribution and dispensing

Through SIGRE, they also take care of their waste and so continue to care for our environment and for nature

13

Page 14: What is Sigrelandia?3 What is SIGRE?5 About this manual 8 Welcome to SIGRELANDIA Homepage 10

We meet a researcher who tells us about his work in four frames.

He also tells us what laboratories do to make medicines more and more effective and safe and to make their packaging increasingly eco-friendly and easy to recycle.

You can move back and forwards at any time to remember some of what we have been told by this or any other character. Just press the yellow arrows that appear in the dialogues.

When he has finished his explanation, he invites us to play in a "Word search".

It is important to complete all five games, since you need them to get the final diploma.

Visiting the city: the pharmaceutical laboratory

18% of all investment in research in Spain is made by the pharmaceutical industry

The pharmaceutical industry is the manufacturing sector that invests

most in research in our country

14

Page 15: What is Sigrelandia?3 What is SIGRE?5 About this manual 8 Welcome to SIGRELANDIA Homepage 10

Here is the word search. Let's play - good luck!

Mark each of the five words hidden in the "word search" by clicking with the mouse on the first and last letter of each one.

Remember that you can always click on the help button "?", located at the bottom left to see how to complete the game.

When the game is finished, the character congratulates us and another dialogue opens up with a "Did you know that ..."

We return to the city.

The test that must be passed after visiting the laboratory

The ecodesign measures applied by pharmaceutical companies since 2000 have

helped to reduce the weight of medicine packaging by almost one quarter

At present there are 284 pharmaceutical laboratories affiliated to SIGRE

15

Page 16: What is Sigrelandia?3 What is SIGRE?5 About this manual 8 Welcome to SIGRELANDIA Homepage 10

At the health centre we are met by a doctor who explains in three frames what his work involves and the precautions that we should take when we are going to take medicine.

After giving this advice, he invites us to test our reflexes and our memory through a game of "find the pair."

Visiting the city: the health centre

How to use medicines properly

Always follow the instructions of a health worker

Do not take medications on your own initiative

Always keep them in their original container with the instructions

Keep medicines out of the reach of children

16

Page 17: What is Sigrelandia?3 What is SIGRE?5 About this manual 8 Welcome to SIGRELANDIA Homepage 10

The aim of the game is to turn over the 16 cards, in twos, to find the eight pairs that lie behind them.

There is a time limit for completing the test. If your time runs out before you find the eight pairs, don't worry, you will have more chances.

Remember that you can always click on the help button "?", located at the bottom left to see how to complete the game.

Once all the cards have been paired, the doctor tells us about his profession.

Visiting the city: the health centre

A few tips for staying healthy

• A daily shower is the best way to keep clean • Check the condition of your nails regularly• Don't touch your eyes with dirty hands, a handkerchief or other objects• Keeping your nose clean helps you to breathe more easily • Clean hands help to prevent many diseases• Basic mouth care is important. It makes us feel good, and it gives us a pleasant smile and fresh breath• Rest is very important for our wellbeing. You should sleep at least ten hours a day• Play is vital for children's health

17

We are in the living room and "Mum" tells us in four frames how to put away and store medicines and how important it is to check the first aid kit periodically to remove expired medicines and take them to the pharmacy's Punto SIGRE for recycling.

Once we have read or heard this practical advice on storing medicines at home, we can move on to the next game: knocking down a brick wall

Some tips on the home first aid kit

Visiting the city: the private home

• Medicines should be kept out of reach of children• The first aid kit should not be a medicine store. It should contain items for

basic health care such as a thermometer or tweezers; medicines for minor ailments and for any chronic diseases we may have

• It is advisable always to store medicines in their original container with the prospectus, to check the expiration date, the dose we should take and other recommendations

18

Page 19: What is Sigrelandia?3 What is SIGRE?5 About this manual 8 Welcome to SIGRELANDIA Homepage 10

Empty packaging must also go to the pharmacy's Punto SIGRE:cardboard boxes, blisters, glass bottles, tubes of ointment, etc.

... expired medicines

... medicinal products that are in poor condition

... medicines that have not been needed for a long time

All must be taken in their box and packaging to the pharmacy's Punto SIGRE

To pass this test of skill, the player has three balls to shoot down all the blocks at the top.

Move the lower platform with the mouse to keep the ball in play and carry on breaking blocks.

You win two extra balls for every SIGRE logo you collect.

When you finish the game, we have another Did you know that ....?

Let's go to the pharmacy.

The first aid kit should be checked at least once a year to remove ....

The pharmacist welcomes us, and in three frames, tells us about her work and encourages us to carry on recycling.

As you can see, the Punto SIGRE is in a prominent position in the pharmacy, to the left of the scenario.

Take a good look at it, since it plays an important role in the following frames.

Visiting the city: the pharmacy

In Spain there are 21,015 pharmacies with a Punto SIGRE for collecting packaging and unused medicines. That is

nearly all of them

As well providing us with traditional pharmaceutical care, pharmacists are also our environmental advisors and help us to recycle properly to take care

of our health and of nature

20

Page 21: What is Sigrelandia?3 What is SIGRE?5 About this manual 8 Welcome to SIGRELANDIA Homepage 10

The pharmacist also invites us to participate in a game where we use the SIGRE container to collect the packaging falling from the top of the screen.

Be careful - each medicine packaging adds points because they have to be recycled at the pharmacy's Punto SIGRE (boxes, glass bottles, tubes, etc).

Syringes, thermometers, X-rays, glasses or batteries (which must not be thrown into the Punto SIGRE at the pharmacy) subtract points.

In the bottom left, marked with a question "?",we are told which waste products should be caught with the Punto SIGRE and which should not.

Visiting the city: the pharmacy

The unused medicines deposited in the pharmacy's Puntos SIGRE are taken away using the same vans

that distribute new medicines

This system helps to cut CO2 emissions by 1,400 tons each year

21

Page 22: What is Sigrelandia?3 What is SIGRE?5 About this manual 8 Welcome to SIGRELANDIA Homepage 10

In four frames we are shown the Packaging and Unused Medicines Treatment Plant and given a basic understanding of what is done to correctly recycle each unused medicine deposited at the pharmacy's Punto SIGRE by members of the public.

This time, the game is to join together the pieces of a jigsaw puzzle.

After you finish the puzzle, you will see the last Did you know that ...

Visiting the city: the treatment plant

The world's first plant for the environmental treatment of these unused medicines was built in Spain for SIGRE

in 2002.

22

Page 23: What is Sigrelandia?3 What is SIGRE?5 About this manual 8 Welcome to SIGRELANDIA Homepage 10

The test-game to solve after the visit to the plant is a jigsaw puzzle.

Click and drag a piece to swap it with the one next to it.

After you finish the puzzle, you will see the last Did you know that ...

Visiting the city: the treatment plant

What is done in the Plant with the materials deposited in the pharmacy's Punto SIGRE?

The packaging materials are recycled:

paper and card, glass, plastic, metal, etc.

Unused medicines are disposed of:

to produce energy in industrial plants

23

Page 24: What is Sigrelandia?3 What is SIGRE?5 About this manual 8 Welcome to SIGRELANDIA Homepage 10

Once we have completed all five scenarios making up the visit to Sigrelandia, we see an icon at the bottom of the city, under the heading "DIPLOMA".

Clicking on this link takes us to another page in which the characters that appeared in the various scenarios give us a final tip.

Sigrelandia Diploma

24

Did you know it is compulsory to include the following wording on the prospects of medicines in order to protect the environment:

"Medicines should not be disposed of down the drain or in the rubbish bins. Dispose of packaging and medicines that are no longer required in the pharmacy's Punto SIGRE".

Page 25: What is Sigrelandia?3 What is SIGRE?5 About this manual 8 Welcome to SIGRELANDIA Homepage 10

Once you have seen and/or heard the tips, the DIPLOMA can be printed and pupils can take it home to tell their parents what they have learned in class today about properly recycling containers and unused medicines.

This DIPLOMA brings us to the end of the visit to Sigrelandia. We hope you had fun and that the pupils have learned to use medicines properly and correctly recycle their packaging and waste.
