What is Science and Technology?
What is Science?
• Science is the knowing or the explaining of events in the real world.
• Science explains these events by using the scientific method.
• Science provides lots of scientific facts about the natural world.
• Examples of scientific facts: water is a liquid, a desk is a solid, etc.
The goals of Science
• Science has 3 goals: 1. Speak of only the real (natural) world.
2. Observe and organize information.
3. Provide explanations of events that we can test regularly for validity.
Types of Science
• There are several types of Science at work all over the world.
Scientists
• People that make scientific discoveries are called scientists.

The process of Scientific Discovery
• Scientific discoveries and explanations are made by using the analytical strategy called the scientific method
• The scientific method is used by all scientists worldwide.
Practice using the Scientific Method
• Investigate the following online activities involving the scientific method:
• Scientific Method In Action
• Scientific Method Word Problems
• Scientific Method
Cause and Effect
• We apply the scientific method in order to establish a « cause and effect » relationships in nature. (cause and effect)
A scientific law
• A scientific law is a pattern or an event that always repeats itself in the real world but we are not able to explain how or why it works.
• An example of a scientific law: the law of gravity
A scientific theory
• A scientific theory is a scientific model that explains the cause of an event that occurs in the real (natural) world.
• A scientific theory can be correct now but not correct in the future if we receive contradictory observations from testing the theory.
• An example of a scientific theory: the Big Bang Theory
Important scientific laws and theories
• Every person on Earth should have a general understanding of these 10 really important scientific laws and theories (in Mr. Hanrahan’s opinion)
Technology
• Technology is applying scientific facts in order to simplify our daily lives.
• Examples of technology: eye glasses, a desk, a pencil, a pen, clothing, etc.
Measurement of Matter
• Measurement is finding a number that shows the size or the amount of something.

The Metric System
• The metric system is a measurement system based upon multiples of 10.
• The word « metric » comes from the greek word metron that means « to measure ».
• Canadians use the metric system.
Converting into various units of measurement
• From time to time, it is necessary to convert from one unit type to another.
• This task is not easy because the math calculations can be quite complex and tedious.
• So, scientific calculators and the Internet can help us with these chores.
