What is Science?

• Science is the knowing or the explaining of events in the real world.

• Science explains these events by using the scientific method.

• Science provides lots of scientific facts about the natural world.

• Examples of scientific facts: water is a liquid, a desk is a solid, etc.

The goals of Science

• Science has 3 goals: 1. Speak of only the real (natural) world.

2. Observe and organize information.

3. Provide explanations of events that we can test regularly for validity.

The Metric System

• The metric system is a measurement system based upon multiples of 10.

• The word « metric » comes from the greek word metron that means « to measure ».

• Canadians use the metric system.

Converting into various units of measurement

• From time to time, it is necessary to convert from one unit type to another.

• This task is not easy because the math calculations can be quite complex and tedious.

• So, scientific calculators and the Internet can help us with these chores.
