What is

oil palmbiomass?

NOTE: It is estimated that for every tonne of palm oil produced fromfresh fruit bunches (FFB), a farmer harvests around six tonnes of wastepalm fronds, one tonne of palm trunks, ve tonnes of EFB, one tonneof mesocarp bres, 0.5 tonne of PKS, 250 kg of palm kernel press cake,and 100 tonnes of POME. In all, Malaysia produced 80 million tonnesof oil palm biomass and 56 million tonnes of POME in 2011.

Oil palm fronds: Consist of 62% bresrich in nitrogen. Usedas mulch to reducesoil erosion, conservesoil moisture, andimprove soil structure

and biochemicalproperties.

Palm kernel shells(PKS): Have highestcaloric value of allthe palm biomass.Combined with EFBsand mesocarp for useas fuel. Also used toaerate oil palm polybagseedlings and tosurface estate roads.

Empty fruit bunches(EFB): A solid residue

of the mill. Havehigh bre content.Used as boiler fuel orincinerated for bunchash, a good source ofpotash fertiliser.

Oil palm trunks: Highcontent of non-broustissues, moistureand silica. Consistof lignocellulosicmaterial. Valuable forvalue-added products.

Palm oil mill euent(POME): Rich inplant nutrients andincreasingly used asoil palm fertiliser. Highin organic materialsuitable for anaerobicfermentation for theproduction of biogas.

Mesocarp bres: They make up 15% ofthe fresh fruit bunchesprocessed, and contain6% oil residue and 30%moisture content. Asource of boiler fuel incombination with EFBs.
