How is this different from what I was taught at school?

There is an emphasis on deeper understanding and understanding WHY we do things rather than just on a rule which we learn.

You may notice that equipment (like counters and tens frames etc.) are used a lot more to help in the teaching process.

So how might a child answer a problem like…

There are 82 cars at a car yard 59 are white. How many are not white?

I used tidy numbers. 82 – 60 = 2222 + 1 = 23

I used an open number line.

82 – 20 = 6262 – 3 = 5920 + 3 = 23

I changed it into addition.59 + what = 8259 + 20 = 7979 + 3 = 8220 + 3 = 23

I did 80 – 21 = 5921 + 2 = 23

I changed 59 to 60 and split that in half.

82 – 30 = 5252 – 30 = 2222 + 1 = 23

How can I help my son or daughter?

Students learn ‘Basic Facts’ and ‘Strategies’ at school.

Basic facts are the core skills that students use in their strategies. They might be adding and subtracting numbers to twenty or multiplication facts or something else.

Students must be able to recall these basic facts accurately and instantly.

Step 1: Check with your child’s teacher what basic facts your child should know.

Step 2: Often you can practise these skills by playing simple games at home e.g. turning over two playing cards and adding the numbers together as quickly as you can.

I want to do more?

Try Teacher Tools “Basic Facts” book. This book covers every strategy taught from the Emergent stage to the Advanced Proportional stage. Have a look at it here online.

If your son or daughter is working at Early Additive or above you will be able to find every lesson they are taught in class as a Powerpoint here http://www.teachertools.co.nz/lessons-more/
