    Define "junk food"

Junk food: most of us think we have a good idea of what it is. But

there has never been an objective test that can classify food asjunky or healthy. This issue has begun to surface at the state levelin the United States as legislators attempt to draft regulationsrestricting schools from selling junk food to their students. But perhaps for the first time, an attempt has been made at ageneral purpose formula for determining how junky a food is. TheU.K. Food Standards Agency (FSA) is looking into the regulation ofjunk food advertising. Their consultants have come up with a formulathat produces a numeric value: the higher the number, the junkierthe food.Heres the formula:nutritional score = (calories + saturated fat + sugar + sodium) (protein + dietary fiber + fruit & vegetable content)

The bad stuff on the left is added up, and the good stuff on theright is added up, and then the good stuff is subtracted from thebad stuff to produce the final value. The actual numbers for eachcomponent come from a table supplied by the FSA; for example, foodthat has between 670 and 1004 calories per 100 grams will have acalorie score of 3 entered into the formula. The bad stuff can havevalues between 0 and 10; the good stuff, between 0 and 5.If the overall score of a food is 4 or higher, or the overall scoreof a beverage is 1 or higher, it is classified as high in saturatedfat, salt, or sugar (boffinspeak for junk).

Spokespeople for the food industry are outraged, of course. And evensome newspapers are expressing bafflement at how certain healthyfoods, like Special K cereal, can end up being demonized as junkfood. Of course, the formula may have flaws, which can be correctedover time. But on the other hand, it may turn out on closerinspection that Special K is perceived as healthy because of shrewdmarketing on the part of Kelloggs rather than because of its actualhealthiness. The fallout from this formula promises to befascinating. On a side note, we notice that this formula bears a resemblance toWeight Watchers patented POINTS formula. The Weight Watchersformula only uses calories, fat, and dietary fiber, since its goalis weight loss rather than overall health, and we dont foresee apatent infringement battle on the horizon. But the two formulasmight portend more attempts to quantify food and nutrition beyondsimple macronutrient and nutrient values, with formulas that attemptto give a more wholistic sense of how beneficial or harmful a foodis. This seems like a good thing to us: the body mass index (BMI),for all its limitations, has shown how a simple, easy-to-communicateranking can be valuable in a public health context.

    The Time Factor:

Junk food addiction is so high because of its simplicity. They are easy to prepare and arevery tasty. Junk foods such as potato wafers and Cheetos do not even need cooking or heating. You prefer to eat them when you watch TV. You save yourself a lot of hasslesand time when you are in a hurry eating pizzas and burgers as they are served at your door step hot and ready to eat.

    The Taste Factor:

If time constraint is one reason that pushes you to eating junk food, great taste also, to anextent influences you to opt for junk food. But junk foods get their taste owing to lavishusage of oils, salts and/or sugar. Once you are caught in junk food addiction, you find ithard to think about the loss of nutrition junk food pushes you into.

    Why is Junk Food Unhealthy?

Junk food can be very unhealthy for people if eaten too much and ona regular basis. Many nutritionists will advise people not to eatlots of this kind of food and to not include it in their diet as aregular nutrient. It has different reactions on different people andcan affect their health in many ways.Junk food often includes a very high content in salt, sugar and fatsthat can affect our cardiovascular functions; this is because thehigh conten in fat will cause our arteries to clog causing our heartto suffer because it is put under a lot of strain. The high contentin sugar that is found in many types of fast food can cause us manydifferent types of illnesses and it can also ruin the enamel on ourteeth causing them to rot.The high content in salt is also very unhealthy and can also causeproblems in our heart. People who suffer from obesity or that areover weight have a higher risk of cardiovascular problems caused bythe higher fat and salt contents. This is because people who haveweight problems have normally got heart problems already due to the

fat around the heart. By adding more fats and salts to theirorganism they have a higher risk of heart problems.Any person that eats this kind of menu on a regular basis has a veryhigh risk of suffering with heart problems such as heart attacks.Junk food is not a healthy food at all and because of this it isadvised to eat and drink very little amounts of these types offoods. Even for healthy people it is not advisable to eat lots offast food. For those people who like to eat junk food it is advisable tomaintain a healthy diet on a regular basis and only eat it on rare

occasions. If eaten on a very small basis the risk of illnesses thatit can cause will be reduced.Whats in Some of that Junk Food?* One teaspoon of sugar is extracted from a stalk of sugarcane onemetre in length!* A can of cola contains 10 teaspoons of sugar.

    * The metal in the can costs more than the ingredients (mainly waterwith additives, refined sugar and caffeine).* A super-sized order of McDonald's fries contains 610 calories and29 grams of fat.* A king-sized order of Burger King's fries packs 590 calories and30 grams of fat.* Artificial ingredients can contain an alarming variety ofchemicals. For instance, artificial strawberry flavour can containabout 50 chemicals... and no strawberries at all!* A king-sized Burger King meal, (Double Whopper with cheese, largefries and large drink) contains 1,800 calories (mostly derived fromfat and refined sugar). To burn these calories would take nearly 6hours of cycling (at 20 miles per hour

Harmful Effects Of Junk FoodListed below are some important health complications caused due tosumptuous consumption of junk food.

    Lack of energy:

Junk foods do not contain any nutrients that are beneficial to thehuman body. In most cases, these foods are filled with harmfulcarbohydrates, fats and cholesterol that do not provide any usefulenergy. As a result, somebody consuming junk food has reduced levelof essential nutrients thereby causing weakness in the body.

    Poor Concentration:

One disadvantage of consuming junk food is that it contains highamount of oil and fat. As a result, human body finds this fooddifficult to digest and needs to spend high amount of blood andenzymes. When a person consumes junk food in excess, a major portionof blood in the body is diverted to the intestine. As a result, theperson feels drowsy and suffers with reduced concentration.

    Heart Diseases:

Junk foods have been identified as a major cause of heart diseasesincluding myocardial infraction, cardiac arrest and atherosclerosis. This is due to the fact that junk food contains excessive amount oflow-density lipoproteins and cholesterol that get deposited on theinner linings of blood vessels. This result in formation of plaquesand the heart is required to put an extra effort for pumping bloodthrough the arteries. Presence of fat in the blood also causesreduced oxygen levels. Another harmful factor present in junk foodsis excess concentration of sugars and salt. Excessive concentrationof sodium ions causes an increased heart blood pressure.
