what is induction lighting?BY AMERICAN GREENPOWER

By using electromagnetic fields, induction lamps are able to produce more visible light than traditional lighting sources while reducing power consumption up to 50%. Also, because there are no filaments or electrodes to burn out, induction lamps last about 5 times longer than High Pressure Sodium and Metal Halide bulbs!

Rated Life Hours (1,000 Hours)

By eliminating the use of electrodes and traditional filaments, which typically burn out and cause lamps to fail, we are able to drastically increase the rated life of our induction bulbs. With a rated life of up to 100,000 hours, our induction lamps will help you save money by greatly reducing both replacement and labor costs!

longer lifespan

improved efficacyDue to advances in technology, induction lights are far more efficient than traditional lighting sources. Our electronic ballasts generate power at up to .99x conversion rate. This means that up to 99% of electrical energy is converted to visible light and less energy is lost as heat. As a result, our induction lamps produce much brighter light, far less heat, and consume half of the energy used by traditional lightbulbs!

how does induction work?

Magnetic induction lamps are similar to traditional fluorescent lamps, however, instead of using electrodes that burn out, induction lamps use electromagnets to produce free electrons.

Free electrons generated by the electromagnetic field collide with mercury atoms provided by a pellet of solid mercury to produce UV light photons.

Once UV light is produced, it is converted to visible light by reacting to the phosphor coating on the inside of the tube.

estimated lumen dropoffLumen dropoff is largely determined by a lamps operating temperature and the quality of a lamp’s design. Our induction systems are designed and manufactured with high quality tri-phosphors and a solid mercury amalgam to optimize both the performance and rated life of our lamps. The chart below represents the average lumen output of various commerical light types over the rated life of the lamps. Operating our induction lamps within the termperatures specification will result in an average estimated 70% lumen output at 60,000 hours of use.

resource managementThe benefits to induction lighting go far beyond energy savings! In addition to a longer lifespan, induction lamps help to reduce maintenance and replacement costs, as well as reduce cooling and air-condition costs due to lower lamp temperatures.

improved efficacy

why is induction better?

better quality lighting

How is it that an 85w Induction System can replace a 150w HID system? How is it that the visual acuity is actually improved with the induction system?

This is because light generated by different methods produces light of different qualities. Our eyes perceive this light differently, therefore, affecting our vision in different ways.

Light Source Lighting Vision

Extensive research has been conducted to better understand Mesopic vision; and more specifically, how ‘Scotopic’ vision causes pupil contraction and increased visual acuity. Research has found that scotopically enhanced light (light that appears as blue or natural light) appeares brighter even when light levels are reduced. This allows us to create induction bulbs with reduced wattage (reduced light), while simultaneously improving visual appearance.

The ratio of Scotopic light vs. Photopic light in a lamp is called S/P ratio. This ratio determines the apparent visual brightness of a light source, as perceived by the human eye. Our Induction lighting technology produces a high S/P ratio of up to 2.25. This is why our 85w induction lamp appears as bright or brighter to the human eye than a sodium vapor or metal halide bulb of twice the wattage. Also, because all of our induction bulbs are glare free, our bulbs won’t hurt your eyes!

Incandescence – The emission of light by an object by its high temperature

Fluorescence – The giving off of light by a substance when it is exposed to electromagnetic radiation, such as visible light or x-rays

Illuminance – Light arriving at a surface, expressed in lumens per unit area; 1 lumen per square foot equals 1 foot-candle, while 1 lumen per square meter equals 1lux.

Kelvin – A unit used to measure the color temperature of light. Light with a lower Kelvin temperature will result in a yellowish light; however, light with a higher Kelvin temperature will have a blue tint

Efficacy – A measure expressed in lumens per watt representing the efficiency of a lamp/ballast system

Lux – An SI unit of luminous emittance measuring luminous flux per unit area. Used as a measure of light intensity, as perceived by the human eye, that hits or passes through a surface. Equal to 1 lumen per square meter

Photopic Lumens – Actual lumens read by a measuring device such as a foot candle meter, and accounts for part of the human eye’s perception of brightness

Scotopic Lumens (pupil lumens) – measurement of how the human eye perceives brightness – not generally detected by a light meter

S/P Ratio – The ratio of scotopic to photopic lumens produced by a light source. A higher S/P ratio will result in more comfortable lighting conditions, and greater perceived brightness

Color Rendering Index (CRI) – A quantitative measurement of the ability of a light source to reproduce the colors of various objects faithfully in comparison to a natural light source. Measured on a scale of 1-100, with 100 representing ideal lighting conditions

Lumen - the unit of luminous flux, equal to the luminous flux emitted in a unit solid angle by a point source of one candle intensity.

Initial Lumens – The lumens produced by a lamp after an initial burn in period (usually 100 hours).

Lumens per watt – the lumens of a lamp multiplied by the total watts used by the lamp
