Sticks and Stones FarmOur Story

•  Started our farm in 1998 withBarbara and our two sons.

•  Had to be a better way than

traditional farming-adverse weather& high cost equipment.

•  Researched Hydroponic farmingsettling on drip system technology-most economic with best results.

•  Today we plant over 5 acres ofhydroponically grown fruits andvegetables

What is Hydroponics?•  Brief history: It has been around for

thousands of years.

 –   The Pharoahs of ancient Egypt

used it

 –   One of the Seven Wonders of theWorld - The Hanging Gardens of

Babylon

 –   The Aztecs in Mexico

•  Hydroponics - growing in absence

of soil.•  Plant growth derived through

mineral nutrient solutions.

Advantages of Hydroponics•   No Soil is needed

•  Lower water costs

•  Controlled nutrition levels - lower costs

•  Stable and

higher yields

•  Better pest and

disease control

•  Easier to

maintain andharvest

Are there different types ofhydroponic systems?

•  Wick  - passive system

•  Water - used mainly for lettuce

•  Drip - most widely used

•  NFT - susceptible to power outages

& pump failures

•  Aeroponic - most high tech

•  Ebb and Flow - water flows in and

out

Growing Mediums•  Oasis Cubes - designed for

 propagation

•  Coconut Fiber - totally organic

medium

•  Vermiculite - retains too muchwater

•  Perlite - does not retain water well

•  Expanded Clay Pebbles - for use

in Ebb & Flow systems•  Soilless Mixes - ex: sand,

sphagnum moss

Is it bad for the Environment?•   No, it is more friendly than

conventional farming or gardening

•  It uses 70 to 90 percent less water

•   No fertilizer runoff escapes into our

rivers and lakes

•  Saves space

Soil vs Hydroponic YieldsIf we had one acre of land would we

have the same yield:

•  Tomatoes – soil: 5-10 tons

Hydro: 180 tons

•  Peas – soil: 25,000 lbs.

Hydro: 140,000 lbs.

•  Cucumbers – soil: 7,000 lbs.

Hydro: 28,000 lbs.

Why does Hydroponics producemore yields?

•  The mineral solution

•  The plant is not competing for its

nutrients, it is getting exactly what

it needs includingall trace minerals

that may or may

not be in the

ground

•  Copper, boron,

magnesium,

zinc, iron
