What is Hayaa (modesty)?

Modesty in Islam is one of the principles of faith.

It is freedom from vanity and showiness. It is decency and moderation in speech, manner, dress and total attitude and behavior towards life. It is shyness, simplicity and humility about our abilities and accomplishments.

Modesty is for both male and female. It isn't only for women as many people have the misconception. The sphere of Modesty in Islamic morality is so vast that it encompasses all aspects of human life.

LESSONS LEARNED FROM THIS HADITH

1. A person who has true Imaan will always be decent and not rude.

2. Modesty should be shown in everything.

3. A person’s speech, dressing and manners should always be respectful.

4. Imaan and modesty are joined to one another. If one’s modesty is lost, he’ll lose his Imaan.

Hadhrat Ayesha had great knowledge of Deen. Once, a blind man came to her to ask her some matter of Deen.

When this blind person came, she immediately made purdah.

The man sensed this and asked,

"I am blind, why are you making

purdah from me?" Hadhrat Ayesha

said, "You are blind

but I am not blind.

You cannot see me but I can see you."
