Anumberofstudieshavefoundthattradeopennesstendstoimproveenvironmentalqualityinrichcountrieswhileincreasingpollutionanddeforestationinpoorcountries.Forexample,a2009JournalofEnvironmentalEconomicsandManagementstudybythreeJapaneseresearchers,titled"DoesTradeOpennessImproveEnvironmentalQuality?,"foundthatairandwaterpollutiondeclineamongrich-countrymembersoftheOECD,whereasitincreasesinpoorcountriesastheyliberalizeandembarkontheprocessofeconomicdevelopment.
