What does “Cursillo” mean?What does “Cursillo” mean?

Cursillo means “short course” in Spanish. It is a spiritual renewal movement in the Roman Catholic Church so the short course is in Christianity.

When and where did it begin?When and where did it begin?

• The Cursillo movement started in Spain in the 1940’s and came to the United States in 1957. It has spread to other countries and other denominations within Christianity. (Tres Dias, Kairos, Walk to Emmaus)

• Yes! Pope Paul VI and Pope Joh Paul II have approved, endorsed, and encouraged this renewal. Bishop Kevin Boland supports and provides spiritual guidance for the Cursillo here in this diocese.

• Hundreds of Catholic men and women have been profoundly affected and been transformed.

• Their Christianity has been energized and they have provided lay leadership in our parish and diocesan programs.

• They have become the “leaven” in their own environments of family, workplace and social life.

How does this ‘really’ work?How does this ‘really’ work?

• The power of the Cursillo weekend lies in the action of the Holy Spirit. Our Lord Jesus Christ touches us in His special, unique way through the gift of grace. All we need to do is say “Yes”.

What do you do on the weekend?What do you do on the weekend?

• The three day weekend, Thursday evening through Sunday afternoon, consists of spiritual presentations by priests, deacons and laypersons.

• Small group discussions follow each presentation. During the evenings, ideas of the day are illustrated and presented in unique and enjoyable ways.

• Time is set aside for informal gatherings, food and of course prayer, quiet meditation including daily Mass.

• Friday’s talks center on understanding ourselves and what motivates us.

• The “Fourth Day” plan refers to the weekly and monthly small sharing groups that continue to provide support and encouragement in the Christian community. It provides a way to persevere on your Christian walk for the rest of your life.

• The Cursillo movement is for Catholics who are able to receive the sacraments.

• Singles and both persons of a married couple are strongly encouraged to attend

• Mature, responsible, natural leaders in the community are encouraged to attend

• Those who have an open heart that is searching for a deeper relationship with God

What does “ ” mean?What does “ ” mean?

DeColores means “of colors” in Spanish and refers to the joyful spirit that the Cursillo movement is known for.

(It is also a song that is used throughout the weekend)
