Who does Bipolar disorder affect?� Bipolar Disorder is equally common among men and

women in the United States

� Even children can get it

� However, most symptoms show up in the early twenties

� Those who were abused as children statistically have

higher rates of bipolar disorder

� Almost 2.3 million people suffer from Bipolar Disorder

Bipolar Disorder Statistics � In America, 5.7 million adults are affected by

bipolar which is about 2.6% of the population in

the U.S.

� Age of onset (median) is 25 years old but illness

can start early in childhood or as late as 40s or

50s.� Bipolar is more common in youth then as it is in

adults.

� According to statistics, 20% of the youth that

deal with major depression, will get bipolar

within a 5-year frame from the start of 

depression� 3.4 milion children & young adults who have

depression might develop the bipolar disorder.

How Brain/Body Is Affected

� Bipolar affects the mental processes and the emotions.� Mainly known for the swings between high and low mood,

as well as constant change in energy levels.� High mood cause patients to indulge in more risky behavior

and act more impulsive and recklessly� Low mood cause patients to have a lack of motivation

� Bipolar Depression affects the body systems such assleeping and eating habits due to the constant wearinessand increased or decreased appetite.

� They also experience chronic pain affecting the whole body& may have suicidal thoughts that could lead them to harm

their body in some way.� It is believed that people with bipolar disorder have either

too high or too low amounts of the brain·s majorneurotransmitters that influence that mood (i.e. serotonin,norepinephrine & dopamine)

Symptoms

Bipolar disorder is a condition in whichpeople experience abnormally elevated(manic or hypomanic)

Not everyone's symptoms are thesame, and there is no simplephysiological test to confirm thedisorder.

They usually have a high rate of suicides.

There is many times a depressionalstage followed by a state of elation, orthe vice versa

People it affects

� Its definitely going to affect thepatients family membersbecause they have to take of the patients health and actions.

� The patient is also a victim

because a factor contributes alot to Bipolar Disease is family-abuse in childhood.

� It may also affects peopleworking around because of 

patients inconstant personality.

Treatment for Bipolar Disorder� Untreated bipolar can lead to problems in your

life to your health.

� . There are ways to treat bipolar.

� . Medication, therapy, lifestyle changes and socialsupport combined could treat this disorder.

� . It requires long term treatment.

� . Have a chart of daily life events, mood symptoms,

and hours of sleep. This can help the docter knowwhich medication will work.

� . Some Medications are- ex. Mood stabilizingmedication, Lithium, Thyroid, and olanzapine.

� . There is no cure for bipolar disorder. Propertreatment can help people get better control of their mood swings.

� . Treating this disorder as early as possible canreduce the the chance of getting worse.
