To describe them simply, makerspaces are community centers with tools. Makerspaces combine man-ufacturing equipment, community, and education for the purposes of enabling community members to design, prototype and create manufactured works that wouldn’t be possible to create with the resources available to individuals working alone. These spaces can take the form of loosely-organized individuals sharing space and tools, for-profit companies, non-profit corporations, organizations affil-iated with or hosted within schools, universities or libraries, and more. All are united in the purpose of providing access to equipment, community, and education, and all are unique in exactly how they are arranged to fit the purposes of the community they serve.

Makerspaces represent the democratization of design, engineering, fabrication and education. They are a fairly new phenomenon, but are beginning to produce projects with significant national im-pacts. - Make Magazine

WHAT IS A MAKERSPACE? 创客空间是什么？

WHY START WITH LIBRARIES? 为什么从图书馆开始？Traditionally, libraries have always been a commitment of the availability of free access to knowledge that the community for which it serves made to itself, whether it be a school library, an academic library, a community library or even a nation’s library. It is also a promise we make to serve the education of its citizens, especially of future generations. With the advent of the Internet, library’s traditional mission of of archiving, documenting, storing, making the availability to access and share knowledge have expand-ed and in some cases shifted to the creating of knowledge. The tasks of librarians are becoming more and more complex, requiring them to be knowledgeable about such things as computers, 3D printing, desk top prototyping, and even laser cutting.

We explore at these conferences and workshops of ITIE2016 the extent of possibilities and to share our knowledge and experiences to enable us to meet these challenges.

Makerspaces and libraries are sites of informal learning.

Libraries and makerspaces are inherently interdisciplinary spaces.

Libraries and makerspaces provide equitable access to materials and resources.

Makerspaces and libraries are more than just resource closets.

Libraries and makerspaces serve the common goal of building community.

The expanded lab opens in August 2016, with hours until 2am for all students and faculty at UTA and will also offer community access also. In addition to the 8000 sf makerspace, UTA Libraries has built a studio for the creation of digi-tal video and audio and has plans for additional studio to enable design and creation. Rebecca is passionate about the role of libraries to provide access to creative tools and technology to people regardless of income or training.

ITIE 2016 BEIJING 北京 Keynote Speaker 主题演讲者发言人Ms. Rebecca Bichel has been an academic librarian since 1997 and is currently Dean of Libraries at The University of Texas at Arlington. Her areas of expertise are orga-nizational change and innovation in libraries. In 2014, under Rebecca’s leadership, UTA Libraries opened the UTA FabLab in the Libraries. In 2016, the makerspace was expanded to be the largest makerspace in a university library, with tools including 3D printers, electric kilns, virtual reality technology, and an industrial CNC router.

Keynote Speaker 主题演讲者发言人Miao TianM.A., is an oral/audiovisual archivist and documentary director, whose career in filming Intangible Cultural Heritages extends over a decade.He graduated from Beijing Film Academy in 2006, with a Master Degree in Film Directing. Prior to joining National Library of China in 2010, TIAN worked successively for China Central TV and Beijing Science & Education Film Studio as film director. He is currently the Director of China Memory Project, National Library of China. His working area includes document-ing Intangible Cultural Heritages and interviewing inheritors, digitizing and archiving collections, facilitating public access, and promoting Intangible Cultural Heritages by the means of exhibitions, publications, lectures and moocs. Recently, TIAN has worked

closely with the Department of Intangible Cultural Heritages, Ministry of Culture on drafting regulations and guides on documenting national representative inheritors. TIAN is also invited to teach the related topics in workshops. 田苗，国家图书馆副研究馆员，纪录片导演。2006年毕业于北京电影学院导演系，获硕士学位。先后在中央电视台和北京科教电影制片厂工作，执导了多部非遗题材的纪录片。2010年进入国家图书馆。目前担任国家图书馆中国记忆项目负责人，主要从事口述文献、影音文献的研究与建设工作。六年来，主持建设了多个非遗专题资源库，带领团队对上百项非物质文化遗产和上百位传承人进行了口述访问、影像记录和数字化工作。同时，探索非遗资源的编目与服务方式，并通过展览、讲座、公开课、出版物等方式将这些资源进行公众推广。2015年起，受文化部非遗司委托，组织起草了《国家级非物质文化遗产代表性传承人抢救性记录工作规范》和《国家级非物质文化遗产代表性传承人抢救性记录工作指南》，并在各地举办的相关培训班中担任讲师。

Keynote Speaker 主题演讲发言人 Mr. Luis Herrera is the City Librarian of the San Francisco Public Library, where he is responsible for the administration of the city’s 28 libraries including a main library and 27 neighborhood branches. He has served as President of both the Public Library Association and the California Library Association. In January 2012, Mr. Herrera was named the Library Journal’s Librarian of the Year. Mr. Herrera is the immediate past Chair of Cal Humanities and serves on the Board of the Digital Public Library of America. Mr. Herrera was nominated by President Barack Obama to serve on the Board of the Institute of Museum and Library Services (IMLS).

TIE Talk Speaker TIE演讲发言人Mr. Win-Bin Huang, born in 1977, received his bachelor of mathematics degree, and M.S. and Ph.D. degrees in computer science and information engineering from National Cheng Kung University, Taiwan, in 2000, 2002 and 2008. From 2008 to 2009, he was a visiting researcher in Lehrstuhl für Medientechnik, Technische Universität München, Munich, Germany. Then he worked as an assistant professor with the department of mechanical engineering, Kun Shan University, before 2011. Currently, he is an associate professor in the department of information management, Peking University. His research activities include multimedia processing, data science,

and informatics. After 2013, he participated in teaching work of “Innovative Product Engineering Process” course and executed the project, Catalytic Program in Student Innovation and Practice, with various professional teachers at Peking University. Furthermore, he is a major member of the research team on “Study on the Assessment Indicator System of Makerspace” in his department. Recently, he has led different student teams to work on informative prod-uct design, user experience design, web product design, etc. 黄文彬，男，博士。1977年生。2000年本科毕业于台湾成功大学数学专业。2002-2008年台湾成功大学资讯工程研究所获得硕士与博士学位。2008-2009年在德国慕尼黑理工大学电机工程与信息技术研究所博士后研究工作。2009-2011年在台湾昆山科技大学机械工程系担任助理教授。2012年至今在北京大学信息管理系任教，研究方向为多媒体技术、数据分析及信息计量。2013年开始，他联合各专业老师共同进行北京大学”创新工程实践”全校课程的教学工作与执行北京大学”学生创新实践催化计划”的项目。同时也是北京大学信息管理系”创客空间的评价体系建构”科研项目的主要成员之一，调研国内外创客空间的现况及建构评价创客空间的标准。近年来，他经常带领学生团队进行过信息产品设计，Web产品设计与用户体验设计等开发工作。


TIE Talk Speaker TIE演讲发言人Mr. Rob Davies’ work is dedicated to the strategic development of information services and libraries internationally and their connections with culture, education, media literacy and economic development in the digital era. After 14 years with The British Council in Cairo, Jakarta, Singapore and at its London HQ, he formed a specialist organisation. In this role, he was responsible for instigating and leading numerous European projects, including several under the umbrella of the European Digital Libraries Initiative (Europeana) and worked as a consultant on projects

funded by bodies such as the World Bank, Asian Development Bank, European Development Fund and the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation in more than 40 countries. Mr. Rolf Hapel has been the director of Citizens’ Services and Libraries in

Aarhus, Denmark since 2006. He has been chair of numerous steering groups,

committees and advisory boards nationally and internationally, E.g. he is cur-

rently member of advisory board for EU project Public Libraries 2020, he was

member of advisory board for the Global Libraries initiative of Bill and Melinda

Gates Foundation 2008-2013, member of the jury in the competition for the

new main library in Oslo in 2009 and advisor to Helsinki competition for new

city library 2012. Member of PubliCA consortium 1997-99 and member of

the Bertelsmann Foundation International Network of Public Libraries (INPL) 1999-2003. Member of the Danish

Ministry of Culture Committee, forming the Danish act on public libraries, 2003. Rolf has written many articles

and he is an international renowned speaker on issues like library development and transformation. The big-

gest task for Rolf has been the realisation of the stunning new main library, Dokk1, that opened in June 2015 in

Aarhus. It is a 30.000 m2 building reflecting a new concept of the physical library in the networked society.brary,

Dialogue Panelist 对话环节嘉宾Mr. Brian Bannon is a recognized leader in the government and nonprofit sectors, and has developed cross sector recognition as an innovator. Since 2012, Brian has served as commissioner and chief executive officer of the Chicago Public Library (CPL). With a budget of $130 million annually, seventy-seven branches, two regional hubs, and a 750,000-square-foot central library, the CPL is one of the largest public library systems in the world. Over his tenure, Bannon has built an executive team that has

dramatically changed the library’s organizational direction and brought design thinking—specifically hu-man-centered design—and experimentation front and center to the CPL’s programming and operations. This shift has created an environment that has enabled new programs to expand citywide and be replicated in other cities across the country.

Dialogue Panelist 对话环节嘉宾Mr. Keith Webster was appointed Dean of University Libraries at Carnegie Mellon in July 2013, and to the additional role of Director of Emerging and Integrative Media Initiatives two years later. Keith was vice president and director of aca-demic relations and strategy for John Wiley and Sons and before that held library dean and director roles at major research universities in Australia, New Zealand and the United Kingdom. Keith serves on the Board of Directors of the Nation-al Information Standards Organization, and on the Publications Board of the Association of Computing Machinery. He holds both Chartered and Honorary Fellowships of the Chartered Institute of Library and Information Professionals.

In Hangzhou public Library, in charge of literature lending, logistics, library marketing andreading promotion, based on major background, Shou also served as the director of technical support department, specialized in exploiting and innovating in the field of digital libraryand digital reading. In 2008 Shou responsi-ble for the new library information constructionof Hang Zhou publiclibrary. At the end of 2009 Hangzhou digital library was launched which providethe digital platform with multi-terminal and all-round services by means of internet, mobilenetwork and TV network. A recognized leader of the maker movement, and a pioneer of the impact that makerspaces in libraries can have on learning, discov-ery, and engagement, Dr. Colegrove’s leadership the library went on to become the first academic library in the United States to offer 3D printing and scanning services available not only to students and staff of the University, but to members of the great-er community. His work is acclaimed internationally, with invited presentations

He is committed himself to the innovation of management and service of public library. The service concept of “Equality, free cost and acces-sibility”that he promoted has become the first call in China for public library’s free and equal service for all library users. The “central library – main libraries and branch libraries” service system that he designed has been honored as “Hangzhou Public Mode” by library experts. By drawing on “the third space” theory, he is enriching

the connotation and extension of public library service in the network environment, promoting the public library to fulfill its role of social education and bringing in the concept of library socialization. After she obtained her Ph.D., Dr. Wong spent 2 years as a fixed-income quantitative analyst for American Century Investment. Though she enjoyed analyzing the market, her true passion lies in education. She is a tenure-track professor of Mathematics at NDNU in Belmont, CA. In the summer of 2013, she was a Math lecturer at UC Berkeley and in the summer 2015, she lectured at Stan-ford University for their EPGY (Education Program for Gifted Youth) middle school Math

immerse program.

He specializes in user experience design, product design & graphic design. He was Chief User Experience Designer in Ganji.com (赶集网）for two years and has been managing design and product team for Angel-crunch since 2011. He has been consultant for a number of Internet companies

including Xiaozhu (小猪短租）,Yongqianbao（用钱宝), and Quchaogu（趣炒股), to name a few, and also Ever-green Education Foundation, an educational NGO. ITIE 2016 BEIJING 北京Workshop Presenter 工作坊讲者Mr. Chris Myers is the Lab Manager and Head Inventioneer for the CITRIS Invention Lab, a one of a kind Educational Maker Space that serves the UC Berkeley community. Chris is also a Lecturer at the Jacobs Institute for Design Innovation. He received his Bachelors of Science Degree in Product Design from The Art Center School of Design in Pasadena CA. Chris has designed a variety of products including concept automobiles, electric vehicles, medical equipment, exhibit design, wearable computers and toys. As a prac-ticing product designer he has worked with many companies including Intel Research, (Xerox)Parc, Nokia Research. Chris has a passion for education and has developed

and taught STEM classes for schools, museums and libraries. It is through these classes, along with his partner Anne Mayoral, Chris developed a series of robotic drawing toys which are now produced by their company ArtBot Toys.
