    What Holistic Healing Means:

Holistic healing means taking an holistic approach when seeking treatment forimbalances and choosing to live a more balanced lifestyle. What primarily

distinguishes holistic healing apart from alternative medicine, complementary

medicine, and integrative medicine is that physical health is not necessarily themain focus. Even so, it is often the experience of physical discomfort that willfirst prompt a person's pursuit of holistic healing.

It is true that our pains and other physical discomforts demand our attention.

This is where the saying "sticking out like a sore thumb'" originated from. It isdifficult to ignore the obvious when we are physically hurting. Common sense

tells us that we should seek help to alleviate our discomforts. Holistic healing is

not an "alternative" to conventional medical care. Sometimes going to a medicalprofessional is the best solution to addressing a dis-ease.

Physical illnesses are the symptoms of a greater imbalance that may or may nothave a root cause in the physical.

Holistic or "wholistic" healing addresses all parts of the individual, not just thephysical aspect of a person where manifested illnesses are most apparent.

Holistic healing is not intended to serve as a band-aid or a one time fix. It is anongoing journey of discovery in search of more answers and ultimately; living

better, being healthier, and striving for wholeness.

Holistic Healing Goes Beyond the Mind-Body Connection:

Holistic healing is really a lifestyle approach. The holistic approach goes far

beyond the Mind-Body connection of finding and maintaining wellness. Overallwellness AND "wholeness" is highly valued. All parts of a person's life

(physical healing, mental health and wellness, emotional well-being, and

spiritual beliefs and values) are considered. Taking a holistic approach involvesseeking the tools that will help us attract our desires and find personal power.

A person who embraces the desire to find wholeness within his own being soonlearns the importance of tending to relationships, caring for the planet and our

environments, having compassion for humankind in general, and accepting and

tolerating differences among a diverse population of people.

    Role of the Holistic Healer:

The holistic healer recognizes that our discomforts or pains are merely

symptoms of an imbalance. The imbalance could be a physical issue, the resultof abusing the physical body through an unhealthy diet, lack of exercise, or toolittle sleep. Or, the imbalance may be the result of mental, emotional, or

spiritual needs not being met. No aspect (mind, body, spirit, or emotions) of aperson is overlooked when an holistic treatment is sought.

The holistic healer looks at the "whole person" in order to make his or her

complete evaluation and uses all information gathered before suggestedtreatments to the client are offered. Keep in mind, not all holistic healers are

equal, each has his or her own specialty or expertise to offer. It will benefit you

to shop around for a good fit. Choosing to go to a holistic healer is no differentfrom choosing a medical professional. You decide.

Communication of information, messages, opinions, speech andthoughts can be done via different forms of moderncommunication media, like, e-mail, telephone and mobile.

Some of the basic ways of communication are by speaking, singing, sign language, body language, touch and eye contact.

These basic ways of communication are used to transferinformation from one entity toother. There are manydifferent types of communication but they can be classified into

four basic types of communication. These four types ofcommunication are as follows:

    Verbal Communication

Verbal communication includes sounds, words, language andspeaking. Language is said to have originated from sounds andgestures. There are many languages spoken in the world. The

bases oflanguage formation are: gender, class, profession, geographical area, age group and other social elements.

Speaking is an effective way of communicating and is again

classified into two types viz. interpersonal communication andpublic speaking.

Good verbal communication is an inseparable part ofbusiness

communication. In a business, you come across people fromvarious ages, cultures and races. Fluent verbal communicationis essential to deal with people in business meetings. Also, in

business communication self-confidenceplays a vital role whichwhen clubbed with fluent communication skills can lead tosuccess.

Public speaking is another verbal communication in which you

have to address a groupofpeople. Preparing for an effective

speech before you start is important. In public speaking, thespeech must be prepared according to the type of audience you

are going to face. The content of your speech should beauthentic and you must have enough information on the topicyou have chosen for public speaking. All the main points inyour speech must be highlighted and these points should be

delivered in the correct order. There are many public speakingtechniques and these techniques must be practiced for aneffective speech.

Non-Verbal CommunicationNon-verbal communication involves physical ways ofcommunication, like, tone of the voice, touch, smell and body

motion. Creative and aesthetic non-verbal communicationincludes singing, music, dancing and sculpturing. Symbols and

sign language are also included in non-verbal communication.Body language is a non-verbal way of communication. Bodyposture and physical contact convey a lot of information. Bodyposture matters a lot when you are communicating verbally to

someone. Folded arms and crossed legs are some of thesignals conveyed by a body posture. Physical contact, like,

shaking hands, pushing, patting and touching expresses thefeeling of intimacy. Facial expressions, gestures and eye

contact are all different ways of communication. Reading facialexpressions can help you know a person better.

    Written Communication

  • 8/3/2019 What Holistic Healing Means

    7/22

Written communication is writing the words which you want to

communicate. Good written communication is essential forbusiness purposes. Written communication is practiced in many

different languages. E-mails, reports, articles and memos aresome of the ways of using written communication in business.

The written communication can be edited and amended manytimes before it is communicated to the second party to whomthe communication is intended. This is one of the main

advantages of using writing as the major means ofcommunication in business activity. Written communication isused not only in business but also for informal communicationpurposes. Mobile SMS is an example of informal writtencommunication.

Visual communicationThe last type of communication out of the four types of

communication, is the visual communication. Visualcommunication is visual display of information, like, topography, photography, signs, symbols and designs.Television and video clips are the electronic form of visual

    communication.

These are the four types of communication. The different typesof communication media are increasing day by day to ensure

clarity and eliminate the ambiguity in communication.ByAarti R

Communication is a process that involves exchange ofinformation, thoughts, ideas and emotions. Communication is aprocess that involves a sender who encodes and sends themessage, which is then carried via the communication channelto the receiver where the receiver decodes the message, processes the information and sends an appropriate reply viathe same communication channel.

    Types of Communication

Communication can occur via various processes and methodsand depending on the channel used and the style of

communication there can be various types of communication.

Types of Communication Based on Communication

    Channels

Based on the channels used for communicating, the process ofcommunication can be broadly classified as verbal

communication and non-verbal communication. Verbalcommunication includes written and oral communication

whereas the non-verbal communication includes bodylanguage, facial expressions and visuals diagrams or picturesused for communication.

Verbal CommunicationVerbal communication is further divided into written and oral

communication. The oral communication refers to the spokenwords in the communication process. Oral communication can

either be face-to-face communication or a conversation overthe phone or on the voice chat over the Internet. Spoken

conversations or dialogs are influenced by voice modulation,

  • 8/3/2019 What Holistic Healing Means

    9/22

pitch, volume and even the speed and clarity of speaking. Theother type of verbal communication is written communication.Written communication can be either via snail mail, or email.

The effectiveness of written communication depends on thestyle of writing, vocabulary used, grammar, clarity and

    precision oflanguage.

    Nonverbal Communication

Non-verbal communication includes the overall body languageof the person who is speaking, which will include the bodyposture, the hand gestures, and overall body movements. The

facial expressions alsoplay a major role while communicationsince the expressions on a persons face say a lot about his/her

mood. On the other hand gestures like a handshake, a smile or

a hug can independently convey emotions. Non verbalcommunication can also be in the form ofpictorial

representations, signboards, or even photographs, sketchesand paintings.

Types of Communication Based on Style and Purpose

Based on the style of communication, there can be two broadcategories of communication, which are formal and informal

communication that have their own set of characteristic

    features.

    Formal Communication

Formal communication includes all the instances wherecommunication has tooccur in a set formal format. Typically

this can include all sorts of business communication orcorporate communication. The style of communication in thisform is very formal and official. Official conferences, meetings

and written memos and corporate letters are used for

communication. Formal communication can alsooccur betweentwo strangers when they meet for the first time. Hence formal

communication is straightforward, official and always preciseand has a stringent and rigid tone to it.

    Informal Communication

Informal communication includes instances of free unrestrainedcommunication between people who share a casual rapport

  • 8/3/2019 What Holistic Healing Means

with each other. Informal communication requires twopeople

to have a similar wavelength and hence occurs between friendsand family. Informal communication does not have any rigid

rules and guidelines. Informal conversations need notnecessarily have boundaries of time, place or even subjects for

that matter since we all know that friendly chats with our lovedones can simply goon and on.By Uttara Manohar

When working with other people, verbal communication is only one way that you

show others emotion, approval, disappointment and confidence. How you walk, how

you position yourself when talking and how you use your facial expression are all

cues that other people rely on when making assessments about your abilities and

    current state of mind.

Using Body Language in the Workplace

The more you understand body language and its affect on others, the better you will

be in communicating with co-workers, bosses, clients, vendors and others you

encounter during the day. By making simple adjustments to your posture, facial

expressions and mannerisms, you can improve the way others view you. Assessing

how people view you is necessary in order to make changes.

Ask those around you whose opinion you can trust to determine where

    improvements need to be made.

    Adjustments can include the following:

    * Maintaining a relaxed posture while walking or during a meeting. Relaxed posture

indicates you're comfortable in your surroundings and not under stress. Even if you

experience stress while working on a project, when you reduce the appearance of

stress, those around you will feel more comfortable and will have more faith in your

abilities to lead, delegate responsibility and manage the project.

    * Mannerisms such as fidgeting, moving around a room while talking, breaking eye

contact with others frequently and other bodily quirks you have can be seen as a

distraction to those around you. These mannerisms can make you appear anxious,

unprepared, unorganized, and stressed even if you're not. Learn how to control

these mannerisms by taking note of when they occur, how often they occur, and

consider ways to alter them. Many times, mannerisms are just old habits that need to

    be broken.

  • 8/3/2019 What Holistic Healing Means

    12/22

    * Learning how to control your facial expressions can help you become more

successful in the workplace. If people often ask if you're upset or angry, it may be

because you're constantly frowning or you appear sad. Change your facial

expressions by practicing in the mirror. Find an expression that is relaxed and calm

and make an attempt to wear it as often as possible around others. Once you'relearned how to use your body language to communicate more effectively in the

workplace, you will notice a change in how others react to you.

    Assessing theBody Language of Others

If you're always the last person in the office to know when something is wrong, then

maybe you need to pay closer attention the signals others are sending through their

    body language.

Noticing how people walk, how they carry themselves and how their faces appear

during the day can provide you with many clues. Even though they may be sending

the wrong signals, you should still take note of them so you can assess situations

more confidently instead of relying on the perceptions of others. Becoming more

observant of body language when hiring new employees can also help you choose

the right candidates for positions available. Take notice of how they present their

resume to you, how they sit and how their facial expressions change as they talk

about prior job experiences. Use your observations in conjunction with their resume

and references to determine if they are right for the company you work for.

Communication has been the most powerful instrument from million years. It isa method which assists in conveying or expressing thoughts or ideas of one

person to other. Effective communication means to deliver your thoughts andideas unambiguously. Communication can only be effective if the message sent

by the sender is being understood by the receiver appropriately. If the message

  • 8/3/2019 What Holistic Healing Means

    19/22

is not clear or receiver finds himself unable in understanding the meaning of amessage then it means a sender is facing a problem of communication barrier.

Barriers in effective communication can become the hurdle in progress of professional life as well as in the personal life. According to various

psychologists, approximately 50 percent of message looses its meaning while

conveying from sender to receiver. There are various points where the messageis misinterpreted in which some are as follows:

1)Material or Physical Barrier: This is the main hurdle or barrier in effective

communication at workplace. This barrier in the company comprises largeworking area which is physically estranged from each other. Other things due towhich physical barrier rises may be the organizational environment or noise

coming from back. Various things can be included in physical barrier like largeworking place or working in one section which is physically separate from each

other, closed office doors, separate place for people of different rank etc. These

points can be concluded in physical barriers to effective communication:a)Environmental cause: Too much humidity in atmosphere, light in excess,

lofty temperature or bad ventilation are some of the environmental barriers ineffective communication.b)Challenging Stimulus: If there is loud music or noise in the background

and there is distance between sender and receiver then it becomes very difficultto send the correct message by the sender to the receiver.c)Subjective strain: Due to bad health, too much mental stress, lack of propersleep or consumption of medicines, the receiver can never understand the

    message appropriately.

d)Media ignorance: Receiver should be well known about the medium bywhich sender is sending his message. For example, explaining things to the

workers by maps or charts with whom they are not familiar then they will notbe able to understand the meaning of the message properly.

2)Linguistic Barrier: Different language and vocabulary is another barrier in

communication. Language is vague in nature and its words are symbols whichhardly represent only one meaning. The meanings of these symbols or words

are understood by the sender and receiver in their own way which can result in

misinterpretation. If communicator uses difficult or inappropriate words or if

message is not explained in proper manner then it can result inmisinterpretation. It is the language only that plays vital role in every field so itshould be kept in mind that proper language and words are used. In todays

world if you send your message to another person in his language then it will bemore effective and in this way the communication can be made effectively.

3)Cultural Barrier: You will find diverse culture barrier to effectivecommunication in this world. This communication barrier arise when two

  • 8/3/2019 What Holistic Healing Means

    20/22

people of any organization belongs to different culture, place or religion. Thereare many other factors of cultural barrier like age, social position, mental

difference or thinking behavior, economic status, political views, values andrules, ethics or standards, motives and priorities. The communication done

without mixing any culture will not miss its meaning, but once a culture is

mixed up with the communication then it may loose its exact meaning.

4)Emotional barrier: Every person takes the situations and affair in his ownway as everyone differs from each other. Many times thoughts of the person

become strong base for communication. There are many emotions which can bethe cause of effective communication barrier. Examples include anger, fear, orhostility. Apart from these some barriers to effective communication are

mentioned below:a)Sudden reactions: Many times while communicating, a listener makes

comment or criticizes the message sender without waiting for the sentence to

be completed. So its very necessary to be keep patience and speak once thecommunicator completes his speech.b)Unfair assumptions:Never make wrong assumptions of the message as itcreates great confusion. For example, you incorrectly assumed that your

subordinate have understood the thing you have explained regarding any issue.c)Terror: This emotion makes the person to think slowly. He becomes narrowminded. This makes the negative impact on effective communication skill.d)Person becomes defensive: Man who cannot communicate effectively justtries to justify himself every time because he thinks that accepting the mistake

means degradation. This kind of attitude is a great obstacle in the effective

communication.e)Being overconfident about self knowledge: There are number of persons

existing in this world that are overconfident about themselves that they haveenough knowledge about any subject. But when you talk to such people, you

will discover that they dont have enough knowledge nor such people acceptthat they can be wrong. This is another hurdle in effective communication.

These are some of the points which should be eradicated for making effective

communication. It is important to remove barrier to effective communication in

order to streamline and smoothen the whole process.
